Pros +
- Hosts were lovely and the food outstanding.
- Beautiful property - the view, the room, the amenities, everything was just so good! And the hosts were absolutely FANTASTIC! This place is a gem!
- The location is absolutely fantastic with stunning mountain views, but the real magic here comes from the owners, Butch and Jo. They are super-friendly and went above and beyond to answer our questions and make us feel welcome. I strongly recommend visiting before they retire to experience this level of hospitality! Also, you simply must eat at their bar; even though it has limited hours, the food is incredible. We had the steak and dessert deal for $30 NZD, which was the best meal we’ve had, and the wine is very reasonably priced. To make the evening even better, they played live music for us while we ate! The rooms themselves are very spacious and having a fully-equipped kitchen was a huge plus. The atmosphere they have created here is truly special.
Cons -
- I rated the beds/ comfort low as I slept on the pull out and it was dreadfully uncomfortable. However the room was great with a full well equipped kitchen.
- The rooms have a quite dated, 80s design, so don't expect a modern look if that is important to you (completely unimportant when the owners are as great as Jo and Butch). The only other downside was the WiFi, which was quite slow.
- Room not very modern, though fully functional.Heater runs on a timer, must be turned on every now and then.

Great location. Butch and Jo were very helpful with information about the local area and the Mt Hutt ski area. The room was large and roomy .
Great views of the river. Very convenient location if traveling from Mt. Cook/Queenstown to Christchurch or Hokitika (visited in Autumn; acc. to the pictures also great in Winter for ski). Cable TV (but better look at the landscape!). The hosts offer a delicious dinner.

Lovely hosts. Nice to have a kitchen which had all we needed. Very accomodating to us needing to charge our EV.
Pull out bed had very thin mattress and not comfortable.
We arrived on their day off, a Tuesday, but they fired up the kitchen for dinner just for us and provided all options. We had a brilliant steak. The bar was open as well. This is a small venue with just 2 rooms available to the public, so get your booking done in advance. The rest of the facility is timeshare units. All facilities in our room were excellent.
Stunning location and amazing view of the gorge and river from our motel room. Very helpful and friendly hosts. Spacious, clean and comfortable rooms. We found that some of the descriptions on booking.com matched the apartments in the complex, but not the motel room we stayed in; for instance, no sink in the kitchen part and check in/out times different from advertised, but these were not problematic and we would definitely stay there again.
The owners are so helpful ☺️ The accommodation is warm and comfortable. The view is amazing.
The setting, perched above the Rakaia Gorge, is spectacular. The rooms look out over the gorge. With no ambient light at night stargazing is incredible. And with all that, the best part of the stay was owners Jo and Butch who were welcoming, positive and supportive with personalized attention to each guest. Butch is a chef and prepared the meals. Jo is a singer / guitarist who performed for patrons at dinner. Very special people.
We were on bicycles. A pretty good climb in or out of the gorge (but that's not the fault of the Mt Hutt Lodge!).
Great location, stunning views from the room, very friendly hosts on reception. Room was very spacious and clean.
Jo and Butch were great hosts and Jo sang for us at dinner
the location
Owners went above and beyond to give us a wonderful experience. The staff were polite and helpful. A quiet, restful place with spectacular mountain and river basin views.
The view was extraordinary
In need of some updating. Quite concerned about the power plug on the stove used for the kettle.
Good location, nice big room and kitchen / open plan living room. Good parking and wifi
Great location and wonderful hosts ! Wonderful dinner
A little bit old fashioned,
The accommodation was so wonderful and the hosts were just great! Welcoming, warm and super chatty - totally our kind of people! The room was absolutely pristine and the newly-done kitchen was a great wee place for us to have our hearty breakfasts in the morning. We initially got a fright when we discovered there was no oven in our unit but after some digging, we found all the pots and pans for the stove, an electric fry pan and heaps of other goodies that made it easy to whip something up! The view was breathtaking and despite us being quite a distance from our home, we felt truly snuggled in! Considering this was the cheapest accommodation that fit our needs, I could not give it higher praise - it was so wonderful! Thank you
The pull-out beds were super easy to set up but weren't the most comfortable - no fault of the owners as the gerenal aesthetic of the living space was perfect! Was just a little sore the next day so would recommend the guests with the most resilient bodies should sleep in those beds. Give the comfy bed to the guest/s with the most achy body hahaha
The owners are absolutely wonderful. Dinner at the lodge was a highlight. We just passed through, so did not really explore the surroundings much.
Spacious, clean, natural scenery, and Jo is very friendly and helpful
We had a studio apartment overlooking Rakaia Gorge, what an amazing view! The studio had everything we needed and was comfortable.Jo and Butch were exceptional hosts and their restaurant was very good too!Would love to stay here again.....
