Pros +
- The location and the character of the interior design of the hotel.
- Very friendly and helpful staff. Historic and interesting environment.
- The hotel is about 100 years old and maintains its original elegance. For the price, this hotel was well worth it.
Cons -
- Need more electric outlet for charging multiple devices.
- Advertises free wifi, but it is only available in the lobby. Not in the rooms. It should be clarified. If you need wifi to contact family or conduct business and are dealing with a time difference, it is not convenient to go down to the lobby to connect.

art nouveau decor
Nope!
The blinds covering the windows in the breakfast room could have been raised to let the light from the outside into the room. It is a charming room and would look much better with the blinds up all the way to reveal the beautiful windows.
I loved the fact that the hotel looked like a time capsule from the 1920s around the time it opened. It reminded me of days gone by and I relished the feelings it brought up such as my childhood in the 1980s staying at some old colonial club. The dining room, the proportions, the lift with a bench in it and the lounge with a piano all made it extra memorable and special.
There are certainly some areas which are worse for wear and could use a sprucing up, such as the hallway carpets. It's a tricky one, because if you change too much it loses it's historic charm. Also the prices were reasonable so it probably works as is.
The hotel is located just in the center of the Coimbra - very close to all the attractions, transportation and restaurants. Despite a central location, it was very quite in the room. Staff is super friendly and very helpful with accommodations and recommendations. The hotel is located in a historical building which feels like a museum! Spacious lobby. Breakfast was good, too.
The room was a bit outdated though clean and comfortable.
A neat old hotel right in the heart of Coimbra. Lots of vintage touches in the place and the room was spacious and comfortable. The quirks (such as the bathroom door not fully closing) were endearing rather than annoying. The thin walls (I could hear someone playing Where Is My Mind by the Pixies as I passed in the hallway one morning) felt period-appropriate. The view of the river from the big window in the room was fantastic. And the breakfast! The best we had at any of the hotels we stayed at in Portugal. We loved our stay.
A bit of street noise, as the hotel is right on the main street. Some areas could have been cleaned better, but that felt more like patina than carelessness.
Great location. The front desk team is very friendly and helpful, great staff and willing to help. Left my AirPod at hotel and text via booking, they responded to me with an hour with an update. It’s a historical building so amenity is traditional and a bit out dated, but breakfast and great location makes up for it.
Location was perfect with a view of mondego river and only a short walk to the university. Breakfast was very good, with selection of fresh juices, coffee and tea options. There was bread and pastry selections and egg, ham and cheese. Room was clean and spacious, toilet was sterilized. Hotel staff was helpful and friendly. We really liked the vintage feel of the hotel and it was not at all eerie.
The building had a very vintage feel. Could not beat the location. Staff was great.
Bed felt like sleeping on a board.
Best breakfast all vacation, size of room was as big as a suite, balcony with view of river
Bed was too hard
The staff was great and the location is awesome. It is very good value
The beds are old and the hotel could do with an update but it is a beautiful building.
The view from our room was amazing, the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast included many options and was kept well stocked, the hotel is a lovely art deco style in a great location.
The bed was smaller but suitable.
I left rings on the nightstand and called a few hours after checking out but they weren’t found and didn’t receive call back to update me
The breakfast was great. Our room was very comfortable, and the location was excellent. The hotel was near the bus to the train station, old town, and the river.
I can't think of anything negative.
We stayed here twice during out month long stay in Portugal - both times it was a great experience. The Astoria is a historical "landmark" building from the 1920's in the middle of Coimbra. Okay so its not hip and happening - the hipsters wont be flocking to stay there - that suits me down to the ground. Great staff, great breakfast , great views and all at a reasonable cost. Would you like to have a stay in a lovely hotel that simply oozes art deco charm and style - get booking.
On the 2nd stay the wifi was terrible..........for the whole 3 days.
What can I say - we loved the Astoria so much we booked in twice staying for a total of 6 nights. The Astoria was built in the 1920's and no expense was spared - think lots of brass, carved wooden paneling and art-deco glitz and glamour. Okay so its a bit dated and the decor could do with a spruce up but it just oozes charm, care and attention. The lift is the original 100 year old item and it even had a fold down seat. We had river view rooms for both stays and the vibe around the area is great - very safe out at night and lots to see and do. There is a great bar literally round the corner and a 2 minute walk takes you into the center of the city. The hotel does a fantastic buffet breakfast in the large and airy dining room. Add into this the most attentive and genuinely caring staff and whats not to like. Get booking.......................
Beautiful view, clean, wonderful breakfast, convenient location.
We liked all of it
Old hotel was quaint. Staff was helpful. Breakfast was fine.
Carpets could be replaced for sure.
