    Pros +

    • Close to the bus stop. R
    • Good location short walk to 4 square supermarket and handy for the pub next door. Full kitchen to prepare own meals was useful for travelling on a budget as was the accommodation cost. Reception was manned and friendly, laundry room was available for those in need
    • Convenient location, ample parking, private room was clean, large kitchen and plenty of clean storage place for food. Buy food and gas before arriving as town only has expensive convenience store and gas station.

    Cons -

    • My room was good but my friends room was too hot and she couldn't figure out how to turn it down. She had a triple room on her own
    • No towels
    • The heater was not working, it was very cold. They provided another blanket but it was their responsibility to check in advance if a room's heather is working. Very uncomfortable.

The kitchen was well stocked and plenty of rooom, the loctaion was very close to whakapapa village which is what we were after.

We checked in late and we informed ahead of time that we’re coming late. And the staff was absolutely amazing in leaving me the note with the key. It’s hassle free and the room is quite good?

    No towels

They had fridges and a large kitchen space.

Couldn’t really turn up the heat so it was kind of cold. Also I didn’t read the fine details when booking so was disappointed when I realized you have to pay for WiFi.

    Climbing gym, kitchen set up

Our room was very cold. When asked, received heater which helped a little.

Bed bugs and overly basic facilities spoiled our stay

Stayed here in a private room for two nights in order to do the crossing. Whilst the location is super convenient and the staff are friendly, I cannot recommend this place unfortunately. This accommodation is very basic, which is to be expected for the price and rural location, but we were disappointed to find no hand soap, towels or bin bag in our private bathroom. Furthermore, we were bitten very badly by bed bugs during our stay, which of course soured the experience. Upon informing staff of this, they didn't hesitate to offer a refund (however I did have to pester a little to actually receive it). My main concern is that the staff did not at all seem surprised by my mention of bed bugs, and that I have found a review from March which mentions bed bugs in the exact room we stayed in (room 6), leading me to believe management are aware of the situation and not dealing with it effectively.

Infected with cockroaches. I 100% can't recommend to stay here because the place is terminated with cockroaches (bugs) which can disseminate diseases. ????

Such a great atmosphereMpst people come and go for the Tongariro Crossing, so it's usually short staysVery nice quite place

First time at a hostel where wifi is paid forDidn't really mind it, but just wanna let people know, in case someone expects to be able to go on the wifi

Location and ease of check in.

The bed we slept in was old and well used. Rolled in towards the centre of the bed

Surprised we would have to pay for WiFi

Location was good. Handy restaurant next door.

    Rooms were so hot!

The location was awesome and convenient with nearby essentials within walking distance. The tongariro crossing shuttle was run from the accomadation .There was also a climbing wall for a reasonable fee.

I had an inconsiderate roommate, but that comes with being in dorms. The place is old, so the floor is squeaks in some places.Great place overall

My partner and I stayed for two nights at National Park Backpackers and had a fantastic experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel very welcome — they were friendly, approachable, and always happy to help with any questions we had about the area or facilities. We booked a private room, which was spotless and well-maintained. The bed was comfortable — we slept really well both nights — and the room had everything we needed for a cozy stay. The shower was also excellent, with good water pressure and plenty of hot water, which was perfect after a day of exploring. The common areas were clean and inviting, and the overall atmosphere of the place was relaxed and friendly. It’s also in a great location if you’re planning to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or just enjoy the beauty of the National Park area.We really enjoyed our time here and wouldn’t hesitate to stay again. Highly recommended!

Great base if you're doing walks and activities in the area. Big shared dining room and good kitchen facilities - ideal if you're traveling on a budget like us. There are also restaurants and food trucks nearby if you don't feel like cooking. We even went down memory lane and watched a movie from the VHS collection in reception!

Very clean facilities, huge kitchen/ dining area. Good location for walks in area. Great new coffee shop open at train station after doing up the old waiting rooms, about a 8 minute walk away.

Weird set up of rooms around the climbing wall, gather once a hall and converted. Has a bit of a sterile school feel about it but it's the only Backpackers for KM's. Some staff seemed a little disinterested to serve.
