    Pros +

    • location and price
    • Friendly and helpful staff. Everything is super clean, from rooms to common areas. Spacious communal kitchen big enough for group cooking, very well-equipped. Nice cabinets to store your food, with name labels provided.
    • I happened to have arrived later in the evening, but the Haka House had all of my information available for me to get in and provide self-service. The bunks were pretty nice, since they had good curtains, a little light, a shelf, and an outlet.

    Cons -

    • did not understand that we would not have a private bath
    • Nothing at all.
    • The room was dirty with other people’s hair all in our bed, on our pillows, and throughout the room. Bugs all in the room dead and alive. Trash left on the floor from prior guests. Way overpriced for a private room that was gross.

I wish there was a way to get towels after staff has closed the front desk. Doors to the rooms shut loudly on their own.

Great location in town walking distance to everywhere. Thankful for late check in due to long day of driving . Easy check in and out process

    Good value and location.

Sound proofing between rooms wasn’t great, but as to be expected in a hostel

    Comfy bed

Booking shows 2pm to 11pm check in. Arrived 6:30pm to a locked door with instructions. Not impressed. Checked out 7am and still no staff

The staff were absolutely wonderful and accommodating. The lounge was very comfy to stay in after a long day out walking and this hostel had everything you could possibly need...there was even a sauna!

Staying in a hostel, sharing a room with your adult son, could be a recipe for disaster. But the room at Haka was fabulous - clean, comfortable, quiet. The kitchen and dining facilities looked top notch, although we walked everywhere and ate in town (can recommend the Blue Ice cafe and bar). (If you're looking for free glow worms, do the walk at the south entrance to Fox Glacier rather than the one at Franz ... it's a bit naff)

    Good location. Had good facilities/ammenities.

Common area was quite dirty, lots of unwashed crockery and cutlery stacked up on the benches and old food in the sink. Rubbish and food in the common area and it looked like it hadn’t been swept in a week. Our room also had hair through the shower (in the drain and under/behind shampoo bottles on the floor. A paper bag belonging to the previous room occupants was also in the room, stuffed between the wall and fridge. Sheets were also slightly discoloured, although washed.Overall the stay was fine, the room was good - cleaner than the rest of the facilities. Some hooks in the bathroom would be beneficial.

Booked a private double room. Room was spotlessly clean and comfortable.

    Shared kitchen was dirty.

    8MurrayPosted on: 4-29-2025

Close to town, clean, good facilities.

I was a late arrival so a bit complicated getting in but it all worked out.

    3LucasPosted on: 4-29-2025

property was unclean, under staffed and had a very dull vibe.

    Quiet, unfriendly and poor service.

    8AnikaPosted on: 4-28-2025

the rooms were amazing! very cozy beds. the bathrooms were nice, but not very clean. i would have enjoyed my stay better if the bathrooms had been more clean for sure.

    4ChloePosted on: 4-28-2025

It looked really nice, esthetically the room looked great.

The light and sockets in each bed didn't work. There was rubbish under the bed and the bin was still full. The bathrooms were disgusting. One toilet had no toilet paper and the other was blocked. I never saw any staff, so I wasn't able to rent a towel to use a shower, which was probably a good thing considering it wasn't very clean in the bathrooms. This place has the potential to be really nice if they focused more on cleanliness.

    6AmeeraPosted on: 4-27-2025

    Comfy and clean bed

Amenities was not great - unsure if cleaning is done daily, though i understand that the bulk of it is expected of the guests to clean up. however things like washing hand sink in kitchen was missing hand towels and women’s toilet one was clogged and the other had 0 toilet rolls. Coffee area out of order, vending machine not refilled only 3 items available, dryer out of order. Unsure what was in order

    4KadiePosted on: 4-26-2025

    The location

Alot of the facilities were out of order and the ones that were in use were not clean at all. The shower drains were all blocked and they would flood and bring up dirty drain water. The kitchen was not cleaned for the three days we stayed.
