- Friendly staff, nice location
- Really enjoyed the room and it was entertaining to read all the articles about the "notorious drunk" the room was named after. Loved the decor and location. When it got dark it was a two minute walk past the cabins at the back to see glow worms which was pretty cool.
Cons -
- Old , dated , expensive for level of furnishings!!!!!
- The bed is super uncomfortable. The room had a weird smell. It made my allergies flared up
- There was a fridge in the common area upstairs but would have liked one in the actual room.

The cottage was nice Restaurant had good food
The windows was left open and there were so many migies.
Serene escape and so lovely and quiet Could hear the birds and so nice not to listen to traffic noiseRoom was clean and neat and had a great feelLoved the information given on the history of the place
It was too expensive for what it wasThe breakfast was not worth the extra money paid for B&BSeperate room in the miners cottage needs AC or a fan to deter mosquitos but staff at the bar lent us a fan so problem solved
It's was very period decor, very Victorian, totally unexpected, four poster bed, free standing bath tub, tea cups and saucer, really clean, very friendly staff, good food in restaurant
Not much else in the town
Everything! This was the highlight of our NZ tour so far, we were in the “Annie” room in the main hotel, spotlessly clean, everything we could need, so peaceful. We had dinner in the pub and the food was fabulous. Tabby, who works in the bar/restaurant was exceptional in her service, highly recommend a stay here.
Only staying one night, we loved it.
Disappointing
Very smelly and old property.. windows and door and broken
When you enter på village, you maybe think: where am i? But this hotell is something else. They have revonvated the hole theatre and the bank on the other side off the road. It is all in victorian style! Really good food, really good people and oh my good for the interier.
The village can drag it down alittle BUT I thinking that around some years from now the village will flourish. It needs more people with good buisness ideas.
We love staying at the Theatre Royal, love the history, the quirkiness, the staff. Some great “ secret “ fishing spots nearby and it’s always fun exploring the area - with so much to see and do .We stayed in the seddon suite this time and loved it .Have stayed in all the hotel rooms some of them multiple times . We will keep coming back .
Previously we’ve always had amazing meals at the restaurant- this time the food wasn’t great. We didn’t say anything as the staff were absolutely wonderful and we can all have a bad day - even chefs .

Owners had done fantastic work restoring the hotel and facilities. Cottage was comfortable and had everything you needed for a few days stay. Very handy having the hotel so close for a few drinks and a beautiful meal. Staff were great
Cottage had a stale musty smell and very cold on arrival. Improved once aired and warmed up. Bathroom had a damp smell and this didn't improve. On further inspection, we found a small area of black mould/rot in the skirting board near the shower. Apparently our cottage had been upgraded, but looking into it, it cost less than what we had paid
Great stay, we stayed in one of the Miners cottages. Very roomy. Restaurant great to eat at. Staff fantastic. Don’t forget to check out the glow worms.
Very well presented property, lovely renovation.
The food; excessively greasy overcooked burger with a bun that fell apart, dry fish but the fries were correct. I suspect frozen pre-made reheated ingredients put together without concern.I wasn’t prepared to try anything else.
The location was perfect for us. We enjoyed being able to have dinner at the hotel. The staff were very helpful and friendly
Both of the spaces that we were in were well appointed and warm - and very prettily renovated..All of the reception staff are terrific.
There was a booking mix-up which meant we weren't in the room we had booked for either night of our two night stay. The staff worked hard to rectify this, which I really appreciated, but while both spaces were very nice, it was not the stay we had expected (and splashed out on), and we never got to relax properly because of moving.
The delicious food at the restaurant and the experience of dining in a space that felt almost like living as a local made this the most wonderful feel of our entire trip. I hope to return to this place the next time I visit New Zealand.
I hope the hotel can provide a simple map with directions on how to reach the accommodation.
Staff and furnishings and extra touches to the decor and bathroom supplies
Breakfast, only in it should have been described as a continental kne, we were expecting a cooked breakfast.
I loved the cottage nestled among natives. Bellbirds & fantails singing. It was private. Comfy bed. Two bathrooms & a bath in the main bedroom ❤️ Friendly, caring staff
It was a bit cold. It needs a new logburner, it didn't seal properly or put out a lot of heat. It would also benefit from having curtains/ blinds on all windows & doors to keep the heat in. A cutlery drawer would be easier than getting it out of the pantry cupboard.
The hotel has been renovated to a high standard. Our suite in the old BNZ building was stunning
