Pros +

  • I had the opportunity to stay at Casa Umi a couple of years ago, and this time, I was positively surprised by the renovation and refurbishment the hotel has gone true; the deluxe room I stayed at was amazing, Good size, with a small sitting area, great space for computer and desk, beautifully decorated, and very comfortable beds and sumptuous linen, the double seal doors and windows allowed me to sleep without any external noise, I recommend this hotel. Levi, the manager, was valuable with local recommendations; thank you.
  • Very little unfortunately. This place is not habitable. But at least they gave us a full refund without much fuss. I do feel sorry for the two staff who were very apologetic -- I suspect that the various Casa Umi issues are outside of their control, and they have to deal with unhappy guests all the time. I hope the owners of Casa Umi recognise how hard it is for their staff to deal with these problems.

Cons -

  • All was good
  • Upon arrival we were told there'd been a power cut to the local area and as a result the aircon wasn't working (but the ceiling fan was, thanks to a back-up generator). The room's temperature was 30 degrees so the fan was just pushing hot air around -- it was unbearable, and as no staff is on site (it's essentially an Airbnb), there was no-one able to help source a deskfan. We ended up phoning around local hotels and were told the power was only out at Casa Umi -- and everywhere else had working aircon, so we packed a bag and moved elsewhere for the night to ensure sleep. Returned the next day where the housekeeper said this happens often and isn't a local area power issue, it only affects certain rooms. Thankfully Caicos (a smaller room) was available that day and had power, so she moved us there. That afternoon we tried leaving the room and the lock on the door broke off (it was obvious it had been repaired poorly, we could see a piece of scrap metal had been affixed), so we were locked in and couldn't leave the room. Guests walked past and helped open the door, so we were able to get out, but felt unsafe leaving the complex as the lock was broken and our belongings could've easily been taken. Casa Umi staff stopped responding to our WhatsApps asking for help. (Again, no-one was on site.) That night at 2am the power cut out at Casa Umi again -- this time affecting the water as well as the aircon. It was instantly unbearable, 30+ degrees, we were suffocating. Somehow managed to stick it out until the morning, when we spoke to other guests who hadn't had any aircon or power in three nights. We were furious -- no water for drinking, showering or flushing the toilet. We moved for good to another hotel and when we finally heard from Casa Umi staff, they confirmed we would get a full refund which was paid via PayPal over a week later. Added to this, the pool is filthy dirty and no-one swam all weekend.
