Pros +
- Staff were cheerful and friendly, location was great, well maintained. A great pub.
- The hotel is in a perfect location - easy walk to the CBD, Opera House/Harbour Bridge. The room had tremendous character and was fun to stay in. The hosts are amazing -- they let us keep luggage in the room after check-out so we could keep exploring.
- It's location is a definite plus. The personnel were very helpful, accomodating, and personable. The building had an historically cool vibe.
Cons -
- To be picky, the fan was a bit noisy.
- It's a bit loud at times as there's a bar under the rooms. The place is not a palace but it makes up for it in it's location.
- Shower draining system needs to be cleaned.

Small and real, in that it was how a hotel used to be Yet even being old, the rooms were spacious, lots of plug by bed and around room, fan mounted out of the way not standing on the floor. Lots of shelves and hangers. Bathroom was shared but just five steps out of the room, and there were three full private rooms with sink, toilet and shower. Never had conflict for bathroom. Hot water pot for tea coffee just outside the room. Frig in room with cream Staff so friendly, bent over backwards to help or make situations work. Can't imagine staying anywhere else in Sydney as this had such a historical feel.We ate downstairs both nights, just sat outside and watched the people go by. Food was excellent Staff were so friendly, you knew they were on your side.
Home vibe, room space, helpful staff
Shower draining system needs to be cleaned.
I loved that I spent first night in several week in a lively bed with my lovely lover
A bit noisy
The hotel feels like it's tucked away from the rustle and bustle of the city, yet is only a couple of blocks from the city's main green areas and is located close enough to everything I wanted to see.
The bed was missing a board, or something of the like, so only half of it was comfortable to sleep in.
Really enjoyed our stay. Friendly staff. Was able to check in early, which was a life saver after a long flight.Nice building. Comfortable bed. Good hot showers. Nice soaps and all.Very good location, 20 mins walk to the opera house.Extremely good value for money. I'd happily stay here again if I return to Sydney.
It was a little cold in the winter
Location great, good for the price
Couldn’t have a good sleep because the noise of the pub customers downstairs.
Good location, friendly and welcoming staff and good value for money. We also enjoyed the Sunday afternoon Jazz!
It is a lovely hotel, nicely located to explore Sydney! Everything is pretty as described. It is also filled with really nice little details (free water, coffee, tee; charging stations at each side of the bed), just be aware that it is kind of noisy with the bar downstairs and people heading for the shared bathroom. Didn’t matter to me, but might be difficult for others.
The staff were really friendly and helpful. Location is superb. We loved the character of the property. The food in the bar was excellent and good value. Having shared facilities was not a problem as there were three toilets, two of which had very good showers. There was nothing not to like.
Great location in an inner city neighbourhood, antique furniture and cosy vibe
We have stayed here many times over the last 10 years or so but it seems the maintenance and housekeeping have slipped a lot. Soap holders are rusty, shower gel and soap had run out, windows are really dirty and the peeling paint on the balcony has not been fixed in the last 10 years. It’s really a shame because these things could be fixed quite easily. Hope things will improve before our next stay ?.
Great location and the bar is very nice so relaxing to drink with margarita..cheers?
Stairs to tiring going up and down?and too hot because of old aircon. Much better to have a good aircon especially when summer season.
A charming traditional hotel with a pub and restaurant on first floor. Close to sights, and easy public transportation options. Loved the staff who made you feel like family.
Great hotel in a prime location. The pub downstairs was buzzing and had great food and drink options. We were very impressed with the staff and the facilities provided. Surprisingly quiet!
Felt well cared for. And wonderful character.
One thing that would be nice is if the windows above the room doors were blacked out or had curtains. The hall lights meant that the room was still very bright at night. And the aircon was a touch noisy.
We liked that the staff were very friendly, it was a great place to eat and drink, the room was quite spacious, the location was excellent and the bathroom was good, especially the shower pressure. And it was very good value for money.
We didn’t like the fact that the room didn’t have a fan. We didn’t use the Aircon as it was a bit noisy. The Street noise was a bit excessive but nothing that earplugs didn’t solve. We didn’t like the 42 steps to our room but we knew there were going to be stairs.
Such a great location, very reasonably priced, friendly staff, free coffee/tea/water facilities, nice pub downstairs, walkable to Circular Quay/Botanical Gardens/Opera House etc
Pillows could do an upgrade!
Fantastic location, Superb budget accommodation! Incredibly friendly staff - family run, and Sam was so lovely to deal with. Loved the oldie, antique hotel setup. Even had coffee plungers to use. We had mucked up our arrival booking and Sam incorporated what we needed at no extra charge - he was a gem! Brilliant customer service - thankyou!! Highly recommend.
It would have been ideal if we had a sink in our room - but it was no problem that we didn't.On the top floor it would be ideal to access the jug in the foyer area like the floor below.
