It's obvious history, staff positivity, character.
Adorable hotel and the beds are very comfy!
I really wish that I could remember the name of the guy at the front desk!!! We were winded from the stairs and taking in everything that I didn't catch it and was too embarrassed to ask later. That dude is a national treasure! Friendly & informative.

Cons -

Thin walls, stair access only to lobby.
All was as expected and better. It was a bit hot and stuffy in the room. We were happy to find a fan, though there was no outlet to plug in near the window to pull in that cool breeze that Astoria is known for. No big deal.
walls are paper thin, you can hear conversations around you. No insulation on doors or windows to mitigate this. When anyone shut a door, which was very frequently, it sounded like a small explosion. Impossible to rest or sleep without jumping.
