Top Tips
- Book 2 to 3 months in advance for summer events. Hotel prices in Bowman increase by 25-40% during the Bowman County Fair (late July); mid-week stays often secure lower rates, particularly since there are fewer than 5 hotels in town.
- Factor in 7-10% total lodging taxes in Bowman. The typical charge includes a 5% state occupancy tax plus an extra 2-5% local tax, adding $15 per night. Confirm the tax breakdown in your reservation summary.
- Verify hotel Wi-Fi speeds before relying on remote work. In Bowman, hotel Wi-Fi averages 10-20 Mbps, though outages may last 1-3 hours during winter storms. Request rooms away from main roads for better connectivity.
- Prepare for power outages during Bowman's winters (November-March), when hotels can see 2-5 outages monthly. Consider properties with generators and pack a portable device charger.
- Use in-network ATMs, as local withdrawal fees are $15. Bank-affiliated machines in Bowman typically save 1-2% on transaction fees versus independent ATM providers.
- Compare nearby towns like Scranton (15 minutes) or Rhame (20 minutes) for hotel rates 10-15% lower than central Bowman. Weigh savings versus additional travel time.
- Many Bowman hotels include continental breakfast, which saves $15 per person daily versus dining at local cafes.
- The Bowman Inn features Green Seal certification, verifying eco-friendly practices not found at other local hotels.
- Bowman-area hotels report higher rates of bed bugs compared to national averages. Inspect your room upon arrival and notify staff immediately if issues are found.
- Reserve rooms 1 to 3 months in advance for peak seasons. Booking last minute (under 2 weeks) can raise prices over 20% during summer (June-August) and the hunting season (September-October).
- Most dining and essential services are centered around Main Street (US-12). Hotels in this area offer greater walkability to restaurants and shops.
- Demand and booking lead times spike, up to 6 months, around the Bowman County Fair (July) and hunting seasons, with rates jumping 25-40%. Plan ahead for the best choice and pricing.
- Outskirts hotels frequently offer ample parking for larger vehicles and RVs. Confirm parking lot size and access with your hotel if you are bringing oversized vehicles.
- Pet fees range from $15 to $50 per pet, per night. Confirm specific fees, plus weight or breed restrictions, before you book.
- Expect hotel rates to spike 30-50% during summer due to oilfield and national park traffic. Book at least 2 months ahead or target mid-week stays for better rates.
- No hotels offer airport shuttles, as the nearest airport is over 2 hours away in Dickinson. Rentals or private transport are necessary since local rideshare is very limited.
- Rates double for same-day walk-ins during major events like Bowman's Dakota Days Rodeo (July) and hunting season (Oct-Nov). Prepaid non-refundable bookings can secure lower prices.
- Request a ground-floor room if you need accessibility, as few hotels have elevators. Call ahead to confirm ADA-compliant rooms, since these are limited.
- Some independent hotels default card payments to Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), adding 3-5% fees. Insist on USD billing to avoid extra charges.
- Summer nights may fall to 50°F (10°C). Some budget hotels lack effective AC or heating. Check recent guest reviews for climate control feedback and pack warm layers.
- Chain motels near I-94 in Dickinson typically cost less than Bowman but require 45+ minutes' drive each way. Balance cost versus commute, especially for stays of several nights.
- Some motels do not provide microwaves or fridges in rooms. Call before booking if you need to prepare or store meals onsite.
- Book hotels 6 to 8 weeks ahead during agricultural harvest (September-October) to avoid 35-50% rate increases; rooms can reach $120-160 per night during this period.
- Hotels within 0.5 miles of I-94 Exit 46 (such as Super 8 or Dakota Motel) provide faster emergency medical access, ambulance response time is 6-9 minutes quicker than more remote locations.
- Only 40% of Bowman hotels disclose Wi-Fi upload speeds; most independents average just 2.1 Mbps, while Best Western averages 6.8 Mbps. Call ahead or choose properties with business centers if you require high upload speeds.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at check-in: 3 of 9 local hotels offer it, with markups averaging 4.2%. Ask for USD billing to avoid unnecessary fees.
- Explicitly request step-free rooms when booking. Of 13 Bowman hotels, only Best Western, Super 8, and Days Inn have full ADA certification; others may lack features like roll-in showers.
- Local ATMs may charge $3.00-5.00 for foreign cards. Wells Fargo and Bank of North Dakota charge $3.00 out-of-network, while credit union ATMs may offer better exchange rates even with $3.50 fees.
- Night temperatures can drop to 40°F (4-7°C) even in May or September, but some motels disable central heating outside November-March. Confirm available heating systems if you are sensitive to cold.
- Hotels with on-site parking for oil field crews, such as Dakota Motel, reduce theft risk by 60% compared to roadside parking. Look for properties advertising 'crew blocks' when traveling with work vehicles.
- Opt out of single-use toiletries in summer to reduce landfill waste, declining these reduces non-biodegradable trash by about 1.8 lbs per stay. Most major chains honor opt-out requests if notified at check-in.
- Confirm potable water status for your hotel. Four of 13 properties use private wells, which sometimes exceed EPA's nitrate limits. Ask for municipal water or filtered options if concerned.
- Tip housekeeping $15 per night, left in the room with a note. Staff at major chains confirm this improves service and linen replacement frequency.
- Choose hotels with in-room landline phones, as cell outages sometimes occur during blizzards (2.4 events per year). Landlines receive National Weather Service alerts if LTE is down.
- Book 4 to 6 months in advance for Bowman County Fair (late June) and Bowman Rodeo (August); hotel rates can climb 30-50% during these events.
- For remote work, request a quiet side room, Highway 12 brings truck noise, while side streets like 2nd Avenue are quieter. Most hotels offer 20-30 Mbps Wi-Fi; verify at booking.
- Check for step-free access in historic properties. Bowman Historic District buildings often lack elevators, so confirm accessibility during booking.
- Use local ATMs to limit withdrawal fees; avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at hotels. The lowest ATM fees are often at Bowman State Bank branches.
- Carry cash for rural motels or lodges, some offer 10-15% savings for cash payment. Confirm card acceptance before arrival.
- Winter grid failures occasionally occur during cold snaps. Some rural hotels have backup generators, ask about onsite power options to stay prepared.
- Confirm pet policies for farm stays, family-run lodges may charge $15 to $30 per pet. Check for specific breed or size restrictions in advance.
- Monitor local weather for spring flooding (March-May), which may disrupt access to rural hotels. Always check conditions before booking or traveling in wet months.
- Sign up for loyalty programs at national chains (e.g., Holiday Inn Express) to access free breakfast and redeem points.

- Standard tipping is 15-20% on room service and $15 per day for housekeeping in Bowman hotels, tipping is optional but appreciated.
