Top Tips
- Reserve hotel rooms 8 to 12 weeks in advance when visiting Helena during the Montana Legislature session (January to May in odd-numbered years), as inventory fills quickly.
- Book your downtown hotel 4 to 8 weeks early for the Montana Folk Festival (late July). Ask about potential noise and flexible cancellation policies for event weekends.
- Plan on renting a car for ground transport from Helena Regional Airport (HLN), located 10 to 12 miles from downtown, as scheduled public shuttles are limited.
- Choose hotels along the I-15/US-12 corridor south or east of downtown for typically lower nightly rates and free parking compared to downtown properties.
- Request a room facing the courtyard or on a higher floor when staying downtown during festivals and summer weekends to reduce street noise from Last Chance Gulch.
- Confirm your hotel has mechanical HVAC or in-room air purifiers if traveling July to September due to possible regional wildfire smoke. Sealed windows can also reduce indoor smoke exposure.
- Prioritize hotels with interior corridors and on-site snow removal services for winter travel (November to March) to avoid mobility issues from freezing temperatures and snow.
- Use Helena’s municipal tap water. It is treated and publicly reported, making bottled water a convenience rather than a necessity unless you have specific medical concerns.
- Verify parking costs per night and distance to downtown attractions before booking, as some downtown hotels have limited or paid onsite parking.
- Montana does not have a statewide general sales tax, but lodging may carry local or occupancy taxes. Check the final booking total before confirming your reservation.
