It was the only hotel within a 200 mile radius that had a vacant room

Bathtub had hair in it, drain was plugged so water filled up during shower. "Soap" was a tiny piece about the size of a half dollar coin, no blanket on bed, odor of smoke in non-smoking room, very thin, flat pillows. Basically a shabby place.

The home town feel; the location; the fact that the proprietor, though in the middle of a long-term plan to make several improvements, was using very high quality materials which even the large chains often don't use or, when they do, are more expensive.

Tiles in the bathroom section, though very high quality, were badly in need of regrouting.No guidebook for the hotel or town, but the proprietor went out of his way to provide as much information himself as he possibly could.
