Pros +
- the rooms were very clean, maps available for guests to find there way around the San Fran Area. it was nice to have board games, cards and a pool table available for recreational time.
- The staff and people. Very friendly and accommodating. Clean for a hostel.
- Green Tortoise Hostel has all the best features of a hostel - friendly, inexpensive, safe, clean, and comfortable. I was a middle-aged woman traveling alone and never felt out of place. I met some great people from all over the world.
Cons -
- I did not like the fact that a "Bed & Breakfast" did not offer any form of breakfast for me to make anything for my long trip my last motel at least offered fruit, yogurt, cereal and waffles. this one offered bread and butter.
- Breakfast was lacklustre.
- No. I will definitely stay here again.

Clean, comfortable, safe, quiet, and affordable rooms. The staff was friendly and helpful. The free breakfast was exactly as promised. I had a great time!
It was affordable and the location was fabulous. Meeting other travelers was pretty cool! It was the first time for us staying at a hostel and we enjoyed it. Their community room was great to just chill in and having a kitchen to save left overs and cook was a definite plus!
The beds were a bit too firm for my liking and when we checked out at 4am the lady had my husband run back upstairs to strip bedding which we didn't see any of our multiple roommates ever do when they checked out, so that was pretty annoying.
This has been an outstanding experience—easily one of the best hostels I’ve stayed in during my travels. The infrastructure is thoughtfully designed, the social atmosphere is vibrant, and the space is large, comfortable, and consistently clean. Everything runs smoothly, and there’s always a great energy in the place.
What stood out most was the open, expansive sense of space and freedom throughout the hostel. The large seating areas, comfortable bedding, and well-thought-out layout made everything easy and accessible. Overall, a fantastic experience that left a strong impression.
Great neighborhood. Plenty of good eats from China town to North Beach.
First, I have met some really cool people. GT is great for socializing and winner for it’s awesome location and everyday free breakfast. Bonus, occasional free delicious meals. The dining-room is like stepping into the great splendor of San Francisco’s past. Additionally, I really appreciate the continuous historical footage of SF projected on the walls. However, I have two gripes: First one, is not at all the staff’s fault, it’s about the guest. I have found repulsive behavior of the guest. First, every time I go to the loo, people not flushing, mostly, their feces after using the toilet, disgusting. Additionally, the lack of care by guest of not putting their used toilet paper and what nots in the trash bin. I don’t know if it’s because 95% are young and possibly privileged, used to other people picking up after them, don’t get the concept of communal space, but it’s gross. The cleaning crew do a fabulous job, they really work their ass off. I think to handle this issue is to have more staff that are focused on just attending the bathrooms. I understand the financial effects, maybe charge a little more to cover the labor; I don’t think putting up signs of instructing people to flush will help. Second issue is the bunk bed mattress. They are very thin and hard. I have visited a few other hostels since I have arrived to SF, and all have decent mattress except for the Green Tortoise, which is a shame. I have had painful nights sleeping on them. However, the bunk construction is solidly build. When people climb to the upper bed over me, I am not disturbed by shaking, or noise from the frame creaking, shifting etc. Wood frames rule over, thin Ikea like metal bunk beds. Question, would I come back? The thin matrices, I can only imagine would be comparable to a prison bed. It’s rough, even for one who is in good shape like myself. Due to that, and guest gross bathroom behavior, I’d probably skip.
Great value and great service. Felt safe and with great amenities. Liked the location
The room was hot. Stayed in room 12 which has an window to an interior space. Room was uncomfortabley hot at night
Great atmosphere and staff. Great location. Large kitchen.
The room labeled 1 is right next to the busy street of Broadway. It's VERY loud. Strangely it's quieter during the day. Not a reflection of the hostel at all.
Got a single room in the annex, overall pretty good. Nice and quiet area with a view of the Oakland bridge. You won’t run into a lot of people, unlike in the main hostel.
Room had ants in it and borax had to be bought to kill them off. Very annoying to deal with
The room was clean, the staff was super kind and available - just overall good vibes. I've never stayed in a hostel before and it exceeded my expectations. The bathroom was easy to access as there were several on my floor. The neighborhood is cool, too. (Note that I had the room for myself, rather than the dorm.)
Nothing :)
Really good social place. The breakfast is decent, the location is good
Not really clean and rooms are really small
I really enjoyed the vibes of the hostel, great staff, great location and it even has a sauna!!!

Great location and lobby, cleaned often, good free breakfast
Social events could be improved
Perfect location if you wanna party
Not really clean, old , rooms and beds are small
Comfortable rooms and beds in a old very cute building. Lots of showers and bathrooms so very convenient. Common space was nice. Staff was really nice.
Could be a bit more clean.

Great location and old-school hippie vibe. The staff were friendly and so were the other guests. What I look for in a hostel
I liked it all just fine! My traveling partner was very challenged by all the stairs. Somehow we missed that info in the description--
