There was so much dangerous ice on the road and I was so tired that I checked in to the first available motel that was accessible. The woman on duty dispatched her son to help us get our luggage into the room as there was so much slippery ice

Top Tips
- Lock in lower rates and more choices by booking your hotel at least 14 days ahead, especially for peak events like the Great Texas Balloon Race (September) or AlleyFest (June). During these times, demand can drive prices up by 15-30% and fill hotels quickly.
- Longview relies on cars, with minimal local public transport. Reserve a rental from East Texas Regional Airport (GGG) or arrange a taxi or rideshare in advance. Contact your hotel directly to confirm shuttle pickup from GGG, noting that Uber/Lyft wait times can exceed 20 minutes at off-peak hours.
- Select a hotel location to match your plans: properties along I-20 are 1-2 miles to key businesses and restaurants, while downtown Longview puts you within a 15-minute walk of local dining, the arts district, and nightlife. Airport hotels are closest to GGG, 6 miles south, but will require a car for city access.
- When comparing hotels, prioritize strong air conditioning for summers over 90°F (32°C), complimentary onsite parking, and high-speed Wi-Fi. Traveling with family or working remotely? Ask about free breakfast, pool access, and business centers on property.
- Check recent guest reviews (within 6-12 months) on platforms like TripAdvisor for updates on cleanliness, noise near highways or GGG, and Internet reliability. Look for properties maintaining above 4.0/5 ratings for consistent quality.
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and the original booking credit card for check-in. Review the total nightly cost with the front desk on arrival, as Texas applies a hotel occupancy tax (6-15%) plus added pet or parking fees at many locations.
- Maintain local tipping norms: 15-20% at restaurants, $15 to $25 per bag for bell staff, $15 to $30 per vehicle for valet, and $15 to $30 each night for housekeeping (tip daily). Carrying small bills helps speed up departures and service gratuities.
- Store valuables in your room’s safe and avoid leaving items visible in vehicles, as theft rates from parked cars can rise during busy events. Well-lit hotel lots and security cameras are standard at national brands, so confirm availability if safety is a priority.
- Clarify details by calling your hotel: confirm airport shuttle times, early check-in policies, pet fees, or meeting room access before arrival. Front desk staff can also suggest local BBQ joints (like Bodacious Bar-B-Q or Carter's) and upcoming events within 2 miles.
- Save up to 10% by asking about hotel chain loyalty rates, AAA, AARP, or employer discounts. National hotel brands in Longview support these savings; display ID at check-in to verify eligibility.
- If you're driving a truck, RV, or trailer, confirm with your hotel that oversized or long-vehicle parking is available, as I-20 area properties may restrict large vehicle spaces during peak occupancy.
- Notify the front desk if you plan to arrive after 22:00. Smaller Longview hotels may reduce night staffing, so advance notice helps ensure your room is held and speeds up overnight check-in.
- Use your hotel as a base for exploring: downtown Longview’s shops and Gregg County Historical Museum are within a 10-minute drive, or take a 35-mile day trip to Caddo Lake for bayou paddling. Ask your hotel about local events during your stay.
