Top Tips
- Book your hotel room at least 2 to 3 months in advance for peak seasons, such as summer (May to September) and major holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, to secure better rates and ensure availability for lake-view properties. For flexibility, confirm cancellation policies when reserving direct or via reputable platforms. Rates for lake-view rooms rise 20-40% during these peak periods, and local events can trigger early surges, sometimes as early as 3 to 4 months out.
- Prioritize hotels or resorts offering lake views or direct lake access if Lake Martin is your primary destination, as these properties provide a more immersive experience for water activities. Over 60% of local properties offer boat ramps or nearby docks; if you need step-free access to the water, request details at booking.
- Lakefront hotels may offer boat and trailer parking from $15-25 per night, with advance approval often required. Contact the front desk before arrival to confirm space and overnight parking policies.
- Rent a car for transportation, as public transit and rideshare options (Uber/Lyft) are minimal in Alexander City; a personal vehicle is the easiest way to explore the area and access Lake Martin. Montgomery (56 mi) and Birmingham (83 mi) airports both provide major rental car services with flexible pickup times.
- Prepare for summer weather conditions by packing sun protection, light clothing, and mosquito repellent, as the region experiences hot, humid summers with average highs over 90°F (32°C) June to August. Hotels often supply complimentary sunscreen or umbrellas at the desk. Ask staff about safe shelter locations for thunderstorms or alerts.
- Confirm check-in requirements: bring a government-issued photo ID and the credit card used for booking; hotels often hold an incidental deposit of $50–100. State and local hotel/occupancy taxes typically range from 10-15% of your bill. Some front desks accept digital IDs or mobile cards; verify with your hotel if needed.
- Respect local quiet hours, which generally run from 10 PM or 11 PM to 8 AM, particularly at lakefront properties to ensure a peaceful stay for all guests. Some hotels display posted quiet hours or offer white noise machines for sensitive sleepers—check with reception if you have needs.
- Ask hotel staff for local recommendations—many hotels keep up-to-date guides on dining, fishing spots, family beaches, or current events within 2-4 miles. Staff can often arrange boat rentals, fishing guides, or curated local tours directly.
- Confirm pet-friendly policies, including any breed or weight limits and associated fees, well in advance if you are traveling with pets. Some hotels allow dogs up to 50 lbs for $15-75 per stay and offer treats or waste bags at check-in. Access Lake Martin Dog Park or trails within a 10-minute drive.
- Verify Wi-Fi speed and cell signal reliability upon booking, especially if you plan to work remotely or are staying at a secluded lakeside property where connectivity can be spotty. Verizon typically offers the strongest local signal. Some hotels rent mobile Wi-Fi hotspots or can provide an in-room speed test.
- Familiarize yourself with standard U.S. tipping customs: anticipate tipping 15-20% for restaurant service, $2-5 per day for housekeeping, and $1-2 per bag for bell staff if used. Some properties accept cash tips only—ask at the front desk for policy details.
- Consider vacation rentals like cabins or lake houses for extended stays or groups, as they often provide more space, privacy, and direct lake access than traditional hotels. Rentals usually include kitchens, grills, or kayak use, and offer 2-4 times more living space than hotel rooms. Check cleaning fees and key pickup procedures before booking.
- Check for local events and festivals during your stay, such as Alexander City Jazz Fest (June) or the BBQ Festival (October), which can impact hotel availability and raise demand. Sign up for city event alerts or check hotel calendars 2-4 months in advance to secure your preferred dates.
- Bring small bills for marina fees ($15-25), farmers’ markets, or after-hours stores that may not accept cards. Most hotels have a lobby ATM or can direct you to one within 1 mile.
