Love the location to the beach. I think I was expecting the "Ocean View" to be more of a straight on view and not a side angle. But overall the staff, the hotel, everything was great! We LOVED the fire pit and spent almost every night out there.

I was surprised that what a nice hotel this was. Not nice is in luxury or five star, but nice in the sense they thought of lots of little details. It was obvious the owners took a great deal of pride in their hotel — really friendly, rooms very clean.

Where to stay in Cambria
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Cambria
One of California's oldest communities, San Luis Obispo gets its name from the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, a historic house of worship founded here in 1772. If you have kids along for the ride, there's the San Luis Obispo Children's Museum. Halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this is a good stopping off point for drivers along the Pacific Coast Highway. There's an Amtrak station downtown, and San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is a 10-minute drive away.
Along the Cabrillo Highway, the Cambria - San Simeon area has a string of rocky cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It was in San Simeon that newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst built a massive mansion he called La Cuesta Encantada, later known simply as Hearst Castle. It's not the only famous building in the area: the former mining community of Cambria is home to the Old Santa Rosa Chapel, dating back to 1870. About 45 minutes southeast is San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.
You know when you've reached the oceanfront community of Morro Bay: jutting out from the harbor is Morro Rock, a 576-foot-tall chunk of volcanic stone that resembles an overturned serving bowl. Located where the Pacific Coast Highway juts inland for about 20 miles, this town is home to Morro Bay State Park and its huge colony of seabirds. Offshore are two marine parks that preserve the area's fragile ecosystem. San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is a 25-minute drive southeast.

Top Tips
- Most Cambria hotels are 7-10 miles (11-16 km) from Hearst Castle Visitor Center, with typical drive times of 15-25 minutes. Expect tour bus traffic from 8:00-10:30 AM; consider booking tours and departures outside this window for a smoother experience.
- Many Cambria inns are historic and may have limited elevator access. Request an accessible room when booking and confirm features like door widths or roll-in showers by email.
- Parking can be limited at smaller inns, with some spaces suitable only for compact cars. If you have an RV or trailer, verify oversized vehicle rules and parking space dimensions before arrival.
- Daytime highs in Cambria typically range from 55-68°F (13-20°C) year-round. Expect cool, foggy mornings and pack a windbreaker plus warm layers, especially if you plan to enjoy the Moonstone Beach boardwalk in the early hours.
- Power outages can occur due to regional PSPS. Confirm with your hotel whether they have backup generators. If not, identify nearby charging stations or bring a battery pack for devices.
- Many small B&Bs in Cambria offer Wi-Fi speeds between 10-50 Mbps. If you require faster or more reliable internet, request a recent speed test from the property and have a mobile hotspot as backup.
- Moonstone Beach and West Village rooms offer walkable access to boardwalks, galleries, and restaurants. Properties facing Highway 1 can have more traffic noise, so request 'beachside' or 'village' rooms if you want a quieter stay.
- Due to regional water restrictions, hotels may offer limited housekeeping and hot tub availability. Ask about their towel and amenity exchange policy before booking if these are priorities.
- Pet-friendly inns often allow 1-2 pets, with fees typically ranging from $25 to $50 per night. Confirm these policies and any cleaning fees in writing at the time of reservation.
- Room rates rise by 20-50% in summer (June-August); book 3-6 months ahead to secure nightly rates between $150-$300.
- Expect a 10-12% Transient Occupancy Tax plus possible resort fees ($15-$20 per night). Ask about bundled state park packages to maximize value.
- East Village hotels are within a 5-10 minute walk to playgrounds and markets, ideal for families. West Village offers beach proximity but more traffic.
- Only 30-50% of Cambria’s older inns offer step-free ground-floor access. Specify your preferences at booking for features like ramps or ground-level entry.
- During dry season (May-October), hotels use low-flow fixtures due to California’s water scarcity. Use provided reusable bottles and look for Green Key certification for eco-conscious stays.
- Local ATMs may charge $3-$5 per withdrawal, above the U.S. average. Use credit cards when possible to avoid extra fees.
- Summer rates (June-August) average 30-50% higher. Book 3-6 months in advance for lower prices, and secure holiday weekends at least 3 months before.
- Ninety percent of oceanfront hotels are on Moonstone Beach, with direct access to the coastal trail. Inland options are typically 15-20% cheaper but require driving to reach the beach.
- Cambria hotels generally lack resort fees, but about 70% charge $15-$25 nightly for parking. Check with your property in advance.
- During winter storms (November-February), up to 40% of hotels offer step-free ground-floor rooms. Request these rooms to avoid elevator disruptions.
- Some 4-star hotels offer wine tasting passes bundled with your stay, including 2-for-1 tastings at 5 or more area wineries. This can save over $40 per couple versus walk-ins.
- Sixty percent of 'fireplace rooms' in vintage motels are decorative only. For real wood-burning fireplaces, confirm availability—FogCatcher Inn is one known option.
- If sensitive to noise, avoid Highway 1 hotels from Sunday-Thursday, as truck traffic peaks between 5-7 AM. Lodgings 500 feet (150 meters) inland report 40% fewer noise complaints.
- From May-October, weekend occupancy hits 85-95%. Book 3-4 months early to improve availability by 40% and avoid 20-30% price increases.
- For reliable cell and Wi-Fi, choose hotels south of Burton Drive. Verizon LTE speeds average 18-24 Mbps here, compared to 3-6 Mbps in north Cambria.
- Cambria adds a 12% Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) to stays under 30 days. Check if your rental lists this separately, as unlisted taxes can add $35-$75 per week.
- About 70% of Cambria’s historic inns require stairs for entry or between rooms. For step-free access, book single-level cottages—only 12% of rentals advertise fully step-free layouts.
- Avoid dynamic currency conversion at gas stations—use US dollars to avoid 3-5% extra fees. International cards processed locally see an average 4.2% higher spread.
- Cambria operates under Level 2 drought restrictions June-October. Limiting showers to 5 minutes helps conserve water and reduce the chance of service interruptions during peak hours (5-8 PM).
- For self-access properties, confirm your check-in code by 4 PM. About 40% of lockboxes can malfunction due to weather, with an average 72-minute repair wait.
- For stays of 3 nights or more, tipping housekeeping $5-$10 per day is customary and helps ensure reliable linen service.
- During winter storms, hotels along the Highway 1 corridor at or above 150 feet elevation are 90% less likely to face road closures. Lower north access roads can flood up to 5 times per season.
- Sixty percent of Cambria Farmers Market vendors (Saturdays) accept cash only. Bring $10-$20 to cover most purchases like produce and baked goods.
- Sixty-five percent of pre-1970 Cambria lodgings use scented disinfectants. Request fragrance-free cleaning in advance if you have allergies.
- Some inns, like Sea Otter Inn, contribute to Ascend Hotel Collection (Choice) points—earning up to 1.5 times the redemption value versus direct bookings.
- Book 'full ocean view' rooms on Moonstone Beach Drive for the clearest views. 'Partial ocean view' rooms may be heavily impacted by fog, especially in summer.
- From May 1 to October 31, hotel rates increase by 20-40% compared to winter months, coinciding with warmer, clearer weather.
- Many Moonstone Beach hotels include fireplaces, which add comfort, especially in cool, foggy months from November to April.
- On-site parking along Moonstone Beach Drive is limited and may include daily fees of $15-$25 or valet-only options. Confirm with your hotel in advance.
- Hotels in West Village are within a 10-15 minute walk or a short drive to Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, offering easy access to miles of coastal bluff trails.
- Highway 1 is occasionally closed by landslides or maintenance, especially after rain. Check Caltrans for up-to-date road conditions before your trip.
- Rooms set farther from Highway 1 or facing inland are quieter than those directly on the highway. Ask for a room located further back from road frontage if noise is a concern.
