Location, Good to take long walks by the malecon and Colonial Zone.
The hotel price is too much compared to the room and hallways. Rooms are so outdated. The hallway carpets so dirty and smells. I could ve gotten better quality for the price paids

Loved the architectural character and charm. Our room (6) also had a table and chairs directly outside the entry and was overlooking the courtyard below, which was all a nice surprise. Powerful ceiling fan over the bed.
The historic aspect
This hotel is a dream come true. We slept in a 17th century convent with all the modern amenities of this one. Hotel Employees have so much class & social skills that they can work in the best hotel in Paris.

Nothing but the location
Not a whole lot. Firstly, its location is hard to find, I had to park a couple of streets away and pay for the parking and to a local person to help me with my baggage and take me to the hotel.
There was a continental breakfast, and the staff at the breakfast were kind and helpful!

Where to stay in Santo Domingo
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Santo Domingo
Home to the Dominican Republic capital city, this area boasts a unique blend of old world charm and cosmopolitan flair. You'll find historic sites, modern shopping and plenty of nightlife in this populated area. If you're looking to stretch your legs, head some 20 miles east to Boca Chica, a wide white-sand beach with a natural coral reef.
Conveniently located about 30 minutes outside of the capital city of Santo Domingo, this coastal area features a reef-protected lagoon and shallow water perfect for wading. You'll find plenty of tourist spots here, as well as vendors along the sand and the main street that runs parallel to the sand. The small seaside community of Juan Dolio offers more of a restful retreat away from the busier Boca Chicao, complete with outdoor recreation, restaurants and small shops.

Top Tips
- Book Santo Domingo hotels 2-3 months ahead for peak season (December to April) to avoid 20-30% price surges, especially for popular properties or during major city events like festivals or conferences.
- Factor in an 18% ITBIS (VAT) and a typical 10% service charge on your hotel bill, which can add nearly 28% to the listed room rate. Most online booking platforms show these taxes and charges at checkout, but always check the final total before paying.
- Choose hotels in Polígono Central (Piantini/Naco) for modern amenities and reliable services such as 24/7 dining, or stay in Zona Colonial for historic charm, but expect older buildings and potential street noise. Many historic properties may have limited accessibility; contact your hotel directly to confirm accessible room features or step-free access, and note that modern chains in Piantini/Naco often offer accessible rooms on request.
- When paying by card, decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and opt to pay in Dominican Pesos (DOP) to avoid 2-5% hidden markups—let your card issuer handle the conversion. Some hotels and merchants may try to process your payment in your home currency automatically, so always confirm the payment currency on the keypad before approving.
- Use bank-branch ATMs like Banco Popular or BHD León for cash withdrawals, or hotel lobby ATMs with CCTV for added security; avoid standalone street ATMs, especially at night. Banking hours in the Dominican Republic are typically 8:00-16:00 on weekdays.
- Pre-book airport transfers or use official taxi stands or Uber from Las Américas (SDQ) to avoid price haggling. Official taxi rates to downtown start around RD$1,500-2,000 (approx. $27-$36 USD); allow 20-60 minutes for the trip depending on traffic. Accessible or van taxis can be arranged through most hotel concierges but may require advance notice.
- Expect a 10% 'servicio' (service charge) on restaurant bills; adding a 5-10% tip is discretionary for exceptional service. Tip in Dominican pesos for local staff, but US dollars are generally accepted at international chains. For bellhops, tip RD$50-150 (approx. $1-$3 USD), and housekeeping RD$50-100 (approx. $1-$2 USD) per day.
- Always use bottled water for drinking, as municipal tap water is not considered potable for most travelers; most hotels provide complimentary bottled water in rooms. Use bottled or filtered water for brushing teeth and ice in drinks as well, as advised by the Ministry of Health.
- Verify recent guest reviews for Wi-Fi reliability, especially in smaller Colonial guesthouses, if you plan to work remotely. Many international hotels offer business centers and meeting rooms with reliable Wi-Fi, and some chains guarantee high-speed access—consider a local prepaid SIM (Claro/Altice) as a backup.
- Request an 'ascensor' (elevator) or a ground-floor room when booking in Zona Colonial, as many boutique hotels in restored buildings do not have elevators. For step-free or ramp access needs, contact the property directly to verify elevator width, visual or alarm features, or possible accessibility limitations due to building codes.
- Book 6-8 weeks ahead for December-January stays, and 2-4 weeks for Carnival (February) or Semana Santa (Easter week) to secure popular boutique hotels and avoid sold-out situations. During major festivals or peak holidays, citywide demand can spike, and hotels may require minimum night stays—check cancellation and change policies carefully before booking.
