Top Tips
- Prioritize booking your hotel 3 to 6 months in advance for peak seasons like cherry blossom (late March to early April), Golden Week (late April to early May), summer festivals, Obon (mid-August), and autumn foliage (November) to secure better rates and availability.
- Select your hotel location based on your travel priorities: choose near Hiroshima Station for convenient shinkansen and JR connections, near Peace Memorial Park or Hondori for sightseeing and dining, or in Miyajima town for early morning or sunset views of Itsukushima Shrine.
- Be aware Japanese hotel rooms can be compact. Confirm floor plans, square meters, or specific bed types (Western or futon) when booking to ensure comfort, especially for families.
- Confirm flexible cancellation policies, often 24 to 48 hours before arrival, to protect your plans. Explore breakfast options, as many hotels offer buffets, while ryokan may include multi-course Japanese dinners (kaiseki) that require specific arrival times.
- Carry your passport or residence card for hotel check-in, as Japanese law requires hotels to record guest details and often photocopy identification.
- Plan around standard check-in times (around 15:00) and check-out (10:00 to 11:00). Inquire about early check-in or late check-out fees or use the hotel's luggage storage if needed.
- Utilize takkyubin (luggage forwarding service) for efficient and inexpensive bag transfers between hotels or to and from the airport. This is particularly useful if traveling to Miyajima or with light train baggage.
- Carry some Japanese Yen cash for smaller inns, ryokan, street stalls, and some taxis, as credit cards are not universally accepted beyond larger hotels. International ATMs are available at 7-Eleven stores and post offices.
- Confirm accepted payment methods and prepare for local accommodation taxes, which can be up to 10% of your room rate and are charged separately upon check-out.
- Choose a hotel near a tram stop for easy inner-city travel, as Hiroshima's streetcar (Hiroden) network connects major sites like Peace Park, Hondori, and Hiroshima Station, saving time and taxi expenses.
- Purchase an IC card (like ICOCA, Suica, or Pasmo) at Hiroshima Station or the airport for quick payments on local trams, buses, and convenience store purchases.
- If traveling by shinkansen with a JR Pass, note it does not cover Nozomi trains. Use Hikari or Sakura services instead; your JR Pass or ICOCA card is valid for local JR routes and ferries to Miyajimaguchi.
- Verify Wi-Fi speed and workspace availability if you plan to work, as business hotels typically offer free Wi-Fi and desks, but speeds can vary.
- Inquire about laundry facilities. Many business hotels offer coin laundries and irons for guest use, but this convenience is less common in traditional ryokan.
- Confirm hotel smoking policies in advance, as many properties are now non-smoking with only limited designated smoking rooms or outdoor areas available.
- Take advantage of the comprehensive complimentary amenities provided in Japanese hotels, which often include toothbrushes, razors, and pajamas. This can reduce your packing needs.
- Avoid tipping hotel staff, as it is not customary in Japan. Express appreciation with a polite bow and verbal thanks, or a small wrapped gift if you wish to show extra gratitude.
- Follow onsen (hot spring) etiquette: wash thoroughly before entering, avoid bringing towels into the water, and keep noise to a minimum. If you have visible tattoos, check if private bathing options or tattoo-friendly facilities are available, as some baths may prohibit tattoos.
- Adhere to ryokan and traditional inn customs by removing your shoes at the entrance, wearing provided slippers, and often sleeping on futons. Maintain discretion in communal areas.
- Prepare for detailed waste segregation in your hotel room, as Japan has strict recycling rules. Follow clearly marked bins for burnable waste, plastics, and cans or bottles.
- While larger hotels often have English-speaking staff, learn basic Japanese phrases like "konnichiwa" (hello) and "arigato" (thank you). Use translation apps and have addresses written in Japanese for smoother interactions.
- Be punctual and clear with reservation times for meals or shuttle services, as many ryokan and hotels require advance notice for dinner service and late arrivals.
- Ask hotel staff for local information and assistance. They can help with restaurant reservations, ferry timetables to Miyajima, and bicycle rentals.
- Review current COVID and health policies before your trip, as hotels may still have specific mask or health check rules. Verify these requirements when booking.
- Note emergency numbers (110 for police, 119 for ambulance or fire) and ask at check-in about hotel emergency procedures for earthquakes and typhoons, including evacuation routes and alert communication.
- Expect high safety and cleanliness standards in Hiroshima, but take standard precautions for valuables and be aware of potential weather disruptions during typhoon season (summer to early autumn).
- Consider booking a ryokan or hotel with views of Itsukushima Shrine's torii gate for a unique Miyajima sunrise or sunset experience. These often include multi-course local seafood dinners.
- Sample Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a local specialty, at restaurants near your hotel, Peace Park, or Hondori. Some hotels offer cooking demonstrations.
- Inquire with hotel staff about local sake breweries, Peace Park museum hours, and seasonal festivals like the Hiroshima Flower Festival in May or Miyajima Water Fireworks in summer. Staff can often secure tips or tickets.
- Solo travelers should consider centrally located business hotels or hostels offering lockers and female-only dorms. Hotels near Hiroshima Station provide convenient onward travel and dining options.
- Families should request connecting rooms, extra futons, or family rooms in advance. Choose hotels with breakfast buffets and nearby family-friendly restaurants, and consider avoiding traditional ryokan with steep stairs if using strollers.
- Business travelers should book hotels near Hiroshima Station for easy access to the shinkansen and meeting rooms. Confirm amenities like fast Wi-Fi, printing services, and express laundry.
