I had a oceanfront bungalow, so the view. The hotel is right on probably the nicest beach in Samui. (Silver Beach/Crystal Bay) It is a rather small cove, but absolutely beautiful! Plenty of restaurants, bars and places to get a message during the day.

Top Tips
- Expect a 7% VAT and a standard 10% service charge added to most hotel room rates in Koh Samui. Always confirm the full 'total payable' before booking to avoid a typical 17% uplift, which is common at international and local chains.
- Compare pre-booked hotel airport transfers, usually 300-800 THB (approx. $15-21 USD), with metered taxis from Samui Airport (USM) to Chaweng, which cost about 250-400 THB (approx. $15-15 USD) for a 15-25 minute ride. Confirm with your hotel if their airport transfer includes extras, such as bottled water or porter service.
- Book high-speed catamarans to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao 3-14 days in advance during December-January and festival weekends, as these popular routes fill quickly. Catamaran journeys take 50-90 minutes and typically cost 300-1,000 THB (approx. $15-30 USD); confirm your connection timing with the front desk.
- Nightly rates for hotels in Koh Samui typically increase by 30-60% in December-January compared to May-October. Book popular beachfront villas 4-12 weeks ahead for December stays to access the widest choice.
- Take timestamped photos of jet ski engines and registration when renting on Chaweng and Lamai beaches, and request a signed rental contract before departure. This helps protect against common post-rental damage disputes, a prevalent issue in Thailand’s resort areas.
- Do not drink tap water; most hotels supply 1-2 complimentary bottles of water daily or sell extras for 10-30 THB (approx. $15-15 USD) per 500 ml. Use bottled water for brushing teeth, and confirm with your hotel if larger refill stations are available onsite.
- Purchase a local prepaid SIM card at the airport for 299-699 THB (approx. $15-15 USD) with 10-50 GB of data to supplement hotel Wi-Fi or enable easy maps/delivery apps. Ask your hotel if they provide a SIM card welcome kit or advice for digital setup.
- Match your chosen neighborhood to your needs: Chaweng offers the widest range of dining and nightlife, Bophut has walkable evening restaurants, Maenam and Choeng Mon provide quieter, family-friendly stays. Transfers between these areas typically take 10-25 minutes; hotel shuttle availability and schedules may vary.
- During the February-May dry season, ask your hotel about their main water sources and drought contingency plans. For longer stays, confirm if your property has desalination or backup water tanks to ensure uninterrupted access.
- Request and confirm step-free or accessible rooms when booking, particularly in independent villas and beachfront hotels where steps and limited ramp access are common. Verify features like wide doorways or visual alarms if needed.
- Foreign ATM withdrawals in Koh Samui typically incur a fixed fee of 150-220 THB (approx. $15-15 USD) per transaction. Withdraw larger amounts to reduce per-THB fees, and always select to be charged in THB at local merchants to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) markups.
- For stays longer than three nights, use local laundromats charging 60-120 THB (approx. $15-15 USD) per kg to save compared to hotel laundry services, which typically cost 50-150 THB (approx. $15-15 USD) per item. Confirm operating hours as some close early.
