Top Tips
- Book hotel rooms 3-6 months ahead for Carnival, as major Port of Spain hotels often raise rates by 100% or more and citywide occupancy peaks during the February or March festival. After booking, review your cancellation policy because many rates for this period are non-refundable.
- Expect a 12.5% VAT and a 10% service charge on hotel and restaurant bills, which can add about 22.5% to the listed price. Confirm these charges on your final bill before deciding whether to add an extra tip.
- For airport pickup, use official Piarco transfers, which average 25-40 minutes to central Port of Spain during off-peak traffic. Pre-book to avoid variable, unmetered taxi fares, and verify your driver's name for safety on arrival.
- Trinidad hotels use US-standard outlets (115 V, 60 Hz, Type A/B), so North American devices generally need no adapter. Bring a suitable adapter for European or Australian electronics to stay charged during your trip.
- Consider hotels in Trinidad for lower hurricane risk, as the island historically sees fewer storms than Tobago and other Caribbean destinations between June and November. Check with your hotel for any specific seasonal storm protocols.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at checkout, and select Trinidad & Tobago dollars (TTD) or your card’s home currency to avoid 2-5% poorer conversion rates. Review the payment screen for DCC prompts before you confirm payment.
- Carry local cash (TTD) for taxis and markets; Port of Spain and Scarborough offer strong ATM coverage, but machines are rare in rural areas and some hotels. Bank ATM fees for international cards typically average TTD 30-45 per withdrawal.
- If your hotel adds a 10% service charge, additional tipping is optional and suited to exceptional service. Always check your bill for service charges before leaving cash tips for restaurant or hotel staff.
- Avoid walking after dark in Laventille and parts of East Port of Spain, as these areas report higher violent crime rates from US and UK advisories. Opt for hotel-arranged taxis or rideshare options and travel with a companion whenever possible.
- Mosquito risks such as dengue and chikungunya are present year-round; use repellent and request rooms with air conditioning for added protection, since nets are uncommon in hotels. Confirm your room’s amenities before arrival if mosquito exposure is a concern.
