Top Tips
- Book at least 60 to 90 days ahead of the Calgary Stampede in July, as hotel rates can rise 2-3 times compared to regular periods and many high-demand properties fill early. Select hotels offering events or Stampede shuttle service for additional value.
- Expect a 5% GST and local accommodation tax on top of quoted rates; confirm the final amount on your emailed booking confirmation. These taxes apply at all hotels, including major chains like Marriott or Hilton.
- Downtown Calgary hotels typically charge CAD 25 to 40 per night for self-parking (about $18 to $30 USD); suburbs are often under CAD 15. Some chains waive parking for loyalty members, so check your status or ask at check-in.
- Travel time from Calgary International Airport (YYC) to downtown averages 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or ride-hail with fares around CAD 45 to 60. The 300 Airport Express bus is a lower-cost option at about CAD 11 for a 30 to 45 minute ride.
- Calgary's tap water is high quality and safe to drink. Bring a reusable bottle and use hotel water stations or in-room taps to reduce plastic waste and avoid bottled water costs.
- For safety after dark, choose hotels within 400 to 800 meters (5 to 10 minutes) of a CTrain station or main street like Stephen Avenue. Major chains typically have brightly lit routes and 24-hour security to support guest peace of mind.
- Check Wi-Fi speeds on your reservation, as standard speeds can vary and some hotels offer a business-grade upgrade. Reliable connectivity is especially valuable for remote workers, so request details when booking.
- Wildfire smoke may affect Calgary from May to September. Request a room with sealed windows and HVAC filtration if you are sensitive or traveling with children; local hotels may offer room air purifiers upon request.
- Smoking is not permitted indoors at Alberta hotels by law. Some properties provide designated outdoor smoking areas, so ask the front desk for exact locations if needed.
- For step-free access, roll-in showers, or visual alarms—especially in boutique or older hotels—contact the hotel 48 to 72 hours before arrival. Request written confirmation to ensure your accessible needs are met.
- Major chains like Hilton and Marriott frequently offer free Wi-Fi, late checkout, or waived fees for direct bookings. Unlock member benefits by reserving on the hotel’s website or app.
- Pay in Canadian dollars (CAD) at checkout to avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fees. Most downtown ATMs charge CAD 2 to 4 per withdrawal, so consider using your bank’s partner ATMs where possible.
