Top Tips
- Book hotels 3 to 6 months in advance for winter high season (mid-December to mid-April) and major Grand Cayman events like Pirates Week (October/November) or Cayman Cookout (early January), as rates often increase and availability becomes limited. Confirm cancellation and change policies before committing to a pre-paid rate; hotel concierges frequently offer in-house booking assistance.
- An accommodation occupancy tax of 13% applies on Grand Cayman. Check if online rates include this tax before booking; top hotels typically show tax-inclusive rates, but always verify the final total at checkout.
- Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) is 8 to 10 km (5 to 6 mi) from Seven Mile Beach; expect a 15 to 20 minute taxi or shuttle transfer. Compare set taxi fare with pre-arranged hotel shuttle cost before you arrive.
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is recommended, as complex care may require off-island transfer even with qualified local hospitals. Many upscale hotels provide 24-hour on-call medical access; carry documentation for pre-existing conditions to help expedite care if needed.
- Bring devices compatible with US Type A/B 120V/60Hz outlets; most hotel rooms provide these. During hurricane season (June to November), pack a portable battery, as brief power interruptions can occur, though many hotels have backup generators.
- Municipal tap water in Grand Cayman is treated and potable. Confirm with your accommodation if in-room tap water is supplied, as older properties or small rentals may rely on bottled or tank water.
- Reserve Stingray City or other boat tours 1 to 3 days in advance for ideal times and guaranteed gear, especially during high season. Early morning (8-10 AM) tours usually mean calmer seas and fewer weather cancellations; hotel staff can assist with bookings.
- A 10% service charge is commonly added by restaurants and hotels; check your bill before adding a tip. Tipping an additional 10 to 15% is discretionary and appreciated for excellent service, but not required if service falls short.
- For immediate snorkeling access, select hotels with on-property shore reefs like Kimpton Seafire or The Ritz-Carlton. Ask about reef depth, access rules, and whether step-free beach access or adaptive snorkel gear is provided for guests with mobility needs.
- Pay in Cayman Islands Dollars (KYD) or use a credit card that supports foreign currency to avoid hidden conversion fees; 1 KYD is approximately $1.20 USD. Ask if your hotel applies dynamic currency conversion before settling your bill.
