I always prefer Marriott Hotels and this is a great hotel for the price! Nice clean rooms, water park for the kids, its a really nice place. This would have been a higher score but the breakfast area is really not good for the size of the hotel.

Two hour wait after check in to get room. Paid for handicap access room, but took regular room because of the wait to clean the room and the fact that we drove 4.5 hour to get to the hotel and had to wait another 2 hours in our car. Frustrating!

The only thing that was halfway decent was the fact that I had inadvertently booked a "pet friendly" room and do not have a pet. the lady at the desk changed my room for me to save me the $20. HOWEVER, The room they put me in was filthy dirty.

Top Tips
- Secure your Rapid City hotel 3-6 months in advance for August, when rates can rise 50-200% due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Event weeks frequently cause city-wide sellouts; confirm cancellation policies to retain flexibility if your plans shift.
- Reserve a rental car to explore the Black Hills region. Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is 6-8 miles (15 min) from downtown, and top destinations like Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park are 25-30 miles away.
- For better rates and complimentary parking, compare hotels along I-90 exits and the I-190 spur. National chains on these corridors often provide more value than downtown independents plus easier highway access for day trips.
- Request written confirmation of parking policies if visiting during Sturgis or July 4th weeks. Hotels may add $15-40 nightly parking fees or set multi-night minimums for large events.
- Enjoy strong cell and hotel Wi-Fi in Rapid City, but expect unreliable coverage in the Black Hills. Download offline maps before leaving town and confirm with your hotel if you need steady Wi-Fi for remote work.
- Check local travel and road advisories during winter. Mountain roads may close for snow and ice, adding 20-60 minutes to drives to attractions like Mount Rushmore.
- Visit Mount Rushmore before 9:00 AM or after 4:00 PM to reduce parking wait times by 30-60%. Early or late slots are less crowded and offer better photo opportunities.
- Verify accessible room details in writing. Confirm features like bed height, roll-in shower, and step-free access, and request photos or floor plans if you have mobility needs.
- Book 30-90 days in advance for July 4th and festival weekends. Local events drive up occupancy and limit availability, mirroring summer booking patterns.
- Expect Rapid City hotel rates in July and August to average 35% above the rest of the year. Booking at least 1-3 months ahead for summer stays can result in 30-50% lower prices.
- Plan for a 7.5% city occupancy tax in Rapid City. Combined with the state sales tax, this raises the final hotel bill by about 9% above the quoted nightly rate.
- Hotels near I-90 (Exits 57 and 61) offer easier access to attractions and generally include free parking. These make efficient bases if you're planning multiple park or monument visits.
- Some full-service hotels add daily resort fees of $15-25. Ask for a fee breakdown and what amenities are included to compare total costs accurately.
- Downtown hotels offer walking access to restaurants and shopping but may add $15-20 daily parking charges. West side hotels tend to have lower rates and free onsite parking.
- Confirm hotel Wi-Fi speeds if you require reliable remote work access. Typical download speeds average 35 Mbps, but in some areas, rates can fall below 25 Mbps. Test upon check-in if speed isn't published.
- Outside June-August, some attractions and hotel facilities may reduce their hours or close between October and April. Verify opening times before making reservations.
- Tap water is generally safe throughout Rapid City, but some guests prefer bottled water due to taste or minerals. Ask your hotel if you require additional information or filtered options.
- Book 45-60 days ahead to save 15-25%; rates typically drop 18% compared to last-minute bookings within 14 days of arrival.
- Skip downtown hotels during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally to avoid rate hikes of 40-70%. Some hotels triple prices in the event's first week.
- Select hotels with free shuttles to Ellsworth Air Force Base or Mount Rushmore for 30-40 minutes of travel time savings and to avoid monument parking fees of $15 per day.
- Hotels east of Rapid City along I-90 are typically 20-30% less expensive, averaging $95-125 per night, versus $135-185 downtown. These add only about 12 miles (18 minutes) to Mount Rushmore.
- For remote work, confirm Wi-Fi speed when booking. Median speeds are 35 Mbps, with 30% of hotels below 25 Mbps. Consider testing the connection on arrival if not published.
- Request step-free accessible rooms early, as only 18% of Rapid City hotels offer two or more ADA-compliant rooms. Older properties may have limited accessibility features.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at check-in with foreign cards to avoid hidden fees of 3-5%. Always opt to pay in US dollars for the best rate.
- Consider filtered or bottled water in May-July, when local public systems occasionally surpass 10 mg/L of nitrate. Ask your hotel for water quality information if concerned.
- Indoor pools stay open year-round, while 60% of outdoor hotel pools close by Labor Day. Prioritize hotels with indoor pools if you want swim access after summer.
- Tip housekeeping $2-5 per day by leaving cash labeled 'Housekeeping' on your pillow. Only 35% of guests tip, so this gesture is appreciated by staff.
- When booking winter stays (Dec-Feb) in west-side hotels, book directly instead of through third parties to increase your chances of being compensated for power outages, which affect 10-15% of the area during storms.
- Look for Green Key or ENERGY STAR-certified hotels—seven certified properties in Rapid City consume 22% less water and 18% less energy, supporting sustainable travel.
- Traveling outside July-August can yield 30-50% hotel discounts. Consider autumn foliage (late September to early October) for lower rates and fewer crowds.
- Hotels in Rapid City proper average 20-30% lower nightly rates ($150-250) than those at Mount Rushmore ($200-350). This can free up budget for attractions.
- Many mountain lodges lack elevators and require guests to climb 2-3 flights. Request a ground-floor or step-free room ahead of arrival if you need accessible access.
- July temperatures average 89°F (32°C); enjoy hotel pool access to cool off, as most local hotels offer guests complimentary use during summer.
- Expect hotel prices around Mount Rushmore to spike by 20-40% during major events like the Sturgis Rally in August. Booking 6+ months ahead or choosing hotels in Spearfish can save $100-150 nightly.
- Ask about water refill stations—some hotels offer these for free, while bottled water often costs $2-4.
- Use Rapid Rides shuttle for airport transfers; it costs $20-30, compared to $50-75 for taxis on the 15-20 minute ride from the airport.
- Request east-facing mountain-view rooms for a sunrise view over the Black Hills between 6:30-7:30 AM in summer.
- Review hotel pet policies for outdoor stays—fees are typically $15-50 per night for pets, but service animals are exempt by law.
- Check if the hotel allows loyalty stacking. Some brands, like Candlewood Suites and Choice Hotels, combine points with military or police discounts for an extra 10-20% off.
- Hotel cafes and lobbies often provide free Wi-Fi, even if in-room speeds require paid upgrades. Typical lobby network speeds are 10-20 Mbps.
