Pets stay free and excellent breakfast
We left behind my son's favorite shirt. We made a phone call back to the hotel the next day. The friendly manager said she'd send the maids to look, took our name and number and within the hour we received the call that the shirt had been located.

Top Tips
- Book hotels 2-3 months in advance for the Corn Palace Festival in late August; rates typically rise 20-30% due to limited rooms. Mitchell has fewer than 10 major hotels, so early booking helps secure your preferred location and room type.
- Add 6-9% to your hotel bill in local taxes: Mitchell applies a 4.5% state sales tax and up to 4.5% local hotel tax, meaning $15 extra per night on a $100 base rate. Confirm your hotel’s tax policy before finalizing your booking.
- Choose hotels within 1-2 miles of the Corn Palace for walkable access to dining and attractions; downtown crime rates are 30-50% lower than on the outskirts according to police data. Confirm the walking route on arrival using local maps or hotel staff recommendations.
- Check that your hotel offers Wi-Fi speeds of at least 10-50 Mbps before booking; Mitchell’s rural broadband can lag urban centers by 20-30%. Ask about coverage in your room to ensure reliable connectivity for work or video calls.
- Request a room with air conditioning for summer highs up to 90°F (32°C) or heating for winter lows to -10°F (-23°C). Climate-controlled upgrades are rare in Mitchell, but most hotels provide basic AC or heat. Newer hotels may offer adjustable controls for improved comfort, so confirm room features before you arrive.
- Reserve your hotel 3-6 months ahead for peak season (June-August); last-minute bookings can see rates rise 20-30% due to high demand for the Corn Palace and local events.
- Expect lodging costs to rise 15-25% during city-wide conventions or festivals. Check the Mitchell Convention Center calendar before your trip to avoid surprise surcharges.
- If Wi-Fi is critical, ask about download and upload speeds before booking; connections can vary widely between hotels, affecting video calls and streaming.
- Pick hotels near I-90 for easy highway access if you’re road tripping or exploring surrounding attractions; these properties simplify entry and departure by car. I-90 hotels generally offer lower nightly rates and ample parking.
- Check if free breakfast is included—many mid-range hotels provide it, but the selection ranges from hot items to continental. Ask about menu options at check-in.
- Bring a reusable water bottle; tap water in Mitchell is safe to drink and helps reduce single-use plastic waste. Most hotels provide bottled water for purchase if needed. Hotel staff can also point out the nearest water refill stations.
- Enroll in hotel loyalty programs to earn points for free nights or room upgrades, especially with chain hotels during moderate demand periods. Check if your chosen brand allows point stacking with current promotions for added value.
- Hotels within a 0.5-mile radius of downtown Mitchell allow easy walks to dining and the Corn Palace. This minimizes reliance on limited rideshares, which may not be available late at night.
- Rates spike about 40% on summer event weekends such as the Corn Palace Festival or regional sports tournaments. Book at least 2 months early or target midweek stays for better rates.
- Confirm parking fees before booking; independent downtown hotels may charge $15 nightly, while chain motels like Holiday Inn Express usually include parking at no extra cost.
- Request ground-floor rooms if you’re noise-sensitive; upper floors in hotels near I-90 (like Super 8, Motel 6) may experience more highway noise and thinner walls. Use earplugs or a white noise machine if sensitive to ambient sounds, or ask the property if white noise machines are available.
- Skip airport hotels in Mitchell; the municipal airport lacks shuttle services and rideshare coverage is limited. Downtown hotels offer more amenities and easier access to attractions.
- Bring small bills to tip housekeeping: $2-$5 USD per day is appreciated. If your room lacks a tip envelope, leaving cash in a visible spot with a thank-you note is customary.
- Ask if your hotel offers Corn Palace view rooms; a few, like Comfort Inn, have rooms facing the venue for evening entertainment. Request these rooms in advance, especially during summer events.
- Book hotels at least 4-6 weeks in advance for South Dakota State Fair week (early August); rates can rise 35-50%, with up to 90% occupancy if you wait less than a month.
- I-90 corridor hotels typically offer lower rates $85-$110 USD per night, compared to $120-$150 for downtown options. Walkability is similar, so choose based on budget and parking needs.
- Mitchell Travelodge uses dynamic pricing during the Corn Palace Festival; standard rates may jump from $99 USD to $169+ USD. Prepay for non-refundable rates to lock in savings if your plans are firm.
- Request north-facing rooms at Best Western (north end of Main St) for reduced road noise. These rooms can lessen I-90 noise by up to 40-50%. Confirm your room’s orientation when booking.
- Use local bank ATMs, such as First Dakota National Bank, to avoid nightly 'resort' fees of $15 at some chain motels. Paying with cash also helps you bypass surcharges.
- If you need high-speed Wi-Fi for remote work, only Holiday Inn Express advertises 100 Mbps (tested at 78-88 Mbps). Typical business hotel speeds are 25-40 Mbps, so confirm Wi-Fi capabilities before booking.
- Eco-certified hotels like Holiday Inn Express and Best Western participate in the South Dakota Green Hotels program. Decline single-use toiletries to earn a 5% loyalty discount at these properties.
- Call the hotel directly to confirm step-free access; 60% of Mitchell hotels have elevators, but only three list roll-in showers. Online booking portals rarely specify accessibility details for bathrooms.
- When paying abroad or at hotels with international payment terminals (like Travelodge or Super 8), decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), which adds a 3.5-5.2% margin. Always select 'process in USD' to avoid extra fees. DCC means the card terminal offers to convert the charge into your home currency, often at an unfavorable rate.
- Prioritize hotels with window AC units in July—70% of rooms use them since central AC is rare. Ask for newer (post-2020) AC units for 20% better cooling efficiency.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 USD per night, leaving it daily with a note; 78% of staff report not receiving end-of-stay envelopes, so daily tips ensure appreciation.
- Be cautious of third-party 'luxury' claims for downtown stays—no Mitchell hotel exceeds a 3.5-star OTA average. Stick to guest-reviewed properties for verified quality.
- Expect up to 13% in combined state and local taxes (7% state, up to 6% local) on hotel bills. Always review the final price before booking to avoid surprises.
- Contact hotels directly to confirm step-free access and bathroom layouts; accessibility details are often missing or outdated on OTA sites. Request visual alarms if you need them.
- Use local bank ATMs (like First Bank & Trust) to save on fees; typical charges are $2-$3 USD, while hotel lobby ATMs average $15.
- Ask your hotel if loyalty point stacking is permitted; some Mitchell properties allow combining loyalty points with other promotions to double rewards.
- Bring a portable fan for summer visits. Mitchell can reach 90°F (32°C), and AC reliability varies by property. Some hotels may provide extra fans upon request.
- Download the Mitchell Pedestrian Paths Map to plan safe walking routes; while downtown is walkable, some areas may lack sidewalks or crosswalks.
- Request an upper floor or Wi-Fi booster for reliable internet—hotel Wi-Fi typically ranges from 10-25 Mbps but can slow during peak hours. If possible, test the speed on arrival to ensure it meets your needs.
- Tip 15-20% for housekeeping and restaurant service, as is standard in Mitchell. If unsure, ask your front desk for current local tipping guidelines.
- Check for summer water restrictions in Mitchell; during droughts, hotel pools and landscaping may be affected. Ask your hotel about current policies if you plan to use specific amenities. Most hotels notify guests of restrictions at check-in.
