Top Tips
- Fly into Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) and plan for a 30-40 minute drive (30-35 miles) to Keystone. Most guests reach hotels within 45-75 minutes, including car rental pickup and travel along winding Black Hills roads. To avoid delays, reserve your vehicle in advance and confirm car rental desk hours, especially for evening arrivals.
- During the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in early August, local hotels fill quickly, so book at least 3 months ahead. For summer long weekends (June-August), reserve your room 2-6 weeks earlier than non-peak dates to avoid last-minute rate increases of 30% or more.
- Keystone hotels are just 3-4 miles (about 8-12 minutes by car) from Mount Rushmore. Choose properties with advertised onsite parking to access the monument and area attractions without transit delays, and confirm parking availability when reserving, especially in peak summer.
- Hotels may list free Wi-Fi, but speeds vary by property and room location. Request a recent speed test (download/upload Mbps) from staff, and ask for a room farther from high-traffic areas like the lobby or restaurant for more reliable internet.
- Many Keystone accommodations are low-rise buildings with limited or no elevator access. If you need step-free access, request an accessible or ground-floor room when booking and confirm your assignment 48-72 hours before arrival.
- South Dakota charges a 4.5% state sales tax, and local or lodging fees may apply. Always review the booking total (including taxes and fees) before payment, as the final price can change with added costs.
- Keystone has limited grocery, pharmacy, and large-format shopping options that often close by early evening. Plan a stop in Rapid City (30-40 minutes away) for essentials if you expect to arrive after 6-7 PM.
- Keystone offers a mix of pet-friendly motels and RV campgrounds. Confirm pet fees, weight limits, and whether your RV site includes full hookups when booking to avoid unexpected restrictions at check-in.
- Cell service in the Black Hills can be patchy depending on your carrier. Review AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile coverage maps for Keystone, and if you rely on mobile hotspots, ask your hotel which networks provide the strongest onsite signal.
