Top Tips
- Book your hotel 60-90 days before the National Cherry Festival (late June to early July) to avoid rooms selling out or rates doubling, as this event draws about 500,000 attendees annually. If you need accessible rooms, confirm availability directly with your chosen hotel.
- Reserve centrally located hotel rooms 30-60 days ahead of the Traverse City Film Festival (mid-October) to ensure walking access to downtown venues. Consider hotels with onsite dining or late check-out for more relaxation between screenings.
- Arrive via Cherry Capital Airport (TVC), just 6 miles (9.6 km) from downtown Traverse City, typically a 10-15 minute drive. Use hotel shuttle services when available, and confirm direct summer flight routes for convenient access.
- Choose hotels with included parking in downtown Traverse City between May and October, as municipal pay stations and lot enforcement apply during these months. If you need accessible parking, confirm availability before booking.
- Allow 10-20 minutes to drive to Old Mission Peninsula wineries from downtown, and reserve tastings 24-48 hours in advance, especially on summer weekends. Some hotels offer winery shuttle or group tour deals; ask your concierge about local partnerships.
- Travel time to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is 30-45 minutes (25-40 miles/40-64 km) from Traverse City. Hotels can help arrange accessible transportation or provide park pass information; expect longer drive times during peak season.
- Book hotels with beach or lake access from mid-June to August, when Grand Traverse Bay water is warmest (mid-60s to low-70s °F / 18-23 °C). Many hotels offer heated pools or private beach areas, so ask about these amenities for family-friendly stays.
- If attending conferences at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa (Acme), book early as event dates can fill local hotels and affect nightly rates. Ask your hotel about shuttle service or remote parking options for added convenience.
- For winter stays, check MDOT 511 and NPS alerts for current road and park status, as snow or storms may affect routes. Choose hotels with flexible rebooking or cancellation policies and confirm these details when booking for peace of mind during severe weather.
