The front desk staff tried to remedy the1st room with barf on the sheets with a 2nd room(albeit my 81 year old mom had to pack up ALL her things and change rooms at midnight) and then the front desk staff came & cleaned the poopy toilet in the 2nd room.
It is the nicest hotel in the area. The staff and accommodations are excellent. The hotel is still new enough to not be showing much wear and tear.

Staff was rude - you cannot use the main lobby to hang out as they close right after breakfast . We came from Oklahoma for a soccer tournament- we like to hang out with parents out in lobby and they said no .

Location and. She was so great and was handling so many things on her own. We also obtained a full bedding package for the pull-out sofa bed; sheets, pillow and blanket. The other hotel we were at previously offered only one flat sheet.
This motel was at a nice location with good room comfort and cleanliness.
The manager! When I had problems, 1st room was filthy, 2nd room curtain was pulled off the track, she personally cleaned a room for me

Top Tips
- Confirm airport transfer options for Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport (ICT) before booking. Derby hotels rarely offer ICT shuttles; expect to prebook a private shuttle or reserve an Uber or Lyft for arrivals outside 7:00-22:00. ICT is located approximately 29-35 km (18-22 miles) from Derby.
- Book 3-6 weeks ahead for summer weekends, especially near Rock River Rapids. Family weekend demand from June through August typically pushes rates higher; early booking helps avoid a rate uplift and ensures family room availability.
- Ask for the hotel’s tornado or storm-shelter procedure at check-in. Tornado season in south-central Kansas peaks from April to June; request the exact shelter location and consider a room on the lowest interior corridor if severe weather is a concern.
- Expect free onsite parking at most Derby hotels. Confirm specific restrictions or fees for oversized vehicles like RVs or commercial trucks directly with the hotel.
- Call ahead to confirm pet room availability and budget $15-50 USD per night for fees. Many Derby midscale properties permit pets, but pet rooms are limited and some chains cap the number or weight of animals.
- Do not rely on advertised Wi-Fi speeds for work-grade bandwidth. While Derby hotels advertise free Wi-Fi, stated Mbps are rare; for video calls, ask the front desk for typical upload/download speeds or private meeting space before booking.
- Expect minimal parking or entry fees, but check for credit card preauthorization holds. Hotels commonly place a preauthorization for incidentals, typically $50-150 USD; ask the amount and release timing if using a debit card.
- Derby hotels may experience price surges of 20-30% during local baseball and softball tournaments from June to August. Booking at least 3 months in advance can save $20-50 USD per night.
- Consider nearby Wichita for more hotel options, as it offers a wider range of accommodations. Wichita is approximately 20 minutes away and provides budget-friendly choices starting from $60-80 USD per night.
- Be aware of hotel taxes in Derby, which include a 7.5% hotel tax. Some hotels may charge an additional $5-10 USD per night for amenities.
- Enjoy year-round swimming by selecting hotels with indoor pools. Properties such as Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express, both within 3 miles of Derby city center, offer indoor pools for families to maximize fun, regardless of Kansas weather.
- Book 2-3 months out for events like Derby's annual Fly-In Festival in June. Demand can surge 20-35%, leading to 40-60% nightly rate hikes if not reserved in advance.
- Consider lodging 3-5 miles from downtown Derby for potential savings. These options can cost 25-35% less per night than hotels near the city center, with a trade-off of a 10-15 minute drive to attractions.
- Request accessible rooms early if needed. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are limited in Derby; book 4-6 months out for specific requirements such as step-free entry, wide doorways, or bathroom modifications.
- Prioritize hotels that offer complimentary breakfast. Many Derby hotels provide free continental breakfast, which can save $8-12 USD per person daily compared to dining out.
- Hotels on the outskirts of Derby tend to be 10-15% quieter than central options. This can offer a more peaceful stay, with less noise from trains, traffic, or late-night activities.
- Book 4-6 weeks ahead for Wichita events to avoid price surges. Derby hotel prices can increase 20-30% during events like the Wichita Riverfest (June) or air shows, compared to off-peak rates of $80-120 USD per night.
- Factor in 10-14% total tax on hotel stays in Derby. Kansas imposes a 6.5% state sales tax plus 3-7% local and occupancy taxes, adding $8-20 USD nightly to base rates.
- Select hotels with storm shelters for the tornado season. From April to June, Derby faces a 15-25% higher tornado risk than the national average; prioritize properties like Hampton Inn with onsite shelters.
- Verify 50-75 Mbps Wi-Fi for remote work if critical. Derby hotels offer speeds in this range, which are generally reliable for video calls outside peak evening hours (18:00-21:00).
- Use credit cards to avoid ATM fees in suburban areas. In Derby, ATMs may charge $2-4 USD per withdrawal, which is 50% higher than in Wichita due to fewer bank branches.
- Book weekday stays for potentially lower rates. Weekend nights in Derby can see price increases of 15-25% compared to weekdays, especially during local event seasons.
- Consider hotels with truck or RV parking if traveling with a larger vehicle. Prioritize properties explicitly advertising dedicated parking, as street parking or standard lots may be insufficient.
- Book directly with hotels to potentially avoid third-party upcharges. Local hotels often match or beat OTA prices when contacted by phone or via their website, which can save $10-20 USD per night.
- Avoid stays during October-November weekend events, such as Derby High School football playoffs and Harvest Festival. Hotel prices can surge 30-50% during these times; book 60+ days early or stay in Wichita.
- Verify the quality of free breakfast before booking. Hotels advertising 'complimentary breakfast' vary; some offer hot items like eggs and sausage, while others may only provide cereal and pastries.
- Request a room on the side opposite K-15 highway for a more restful stay. Traffic, especially from overnight truck routes, can increase noise, but properties featuring double-glazed windows or rooms at least 30 meters from the roadside reduce disturbance by up to 60%.
- Check for hidden resort or facility fees. Some Derby hotels may add $5-15 USD per night 'amenity fees' for pool or gym access; clarify these upfront.
- Use Wichita airport shuttles strategically. Only Holiday Inn Express offers a free shuttle to ICT; other hotels may charge $25-35 USD per ride, while Uber averages $18-22 USD.
- Mobile check-in can reduce front desk delays. Peak wait times at Derby hotels, typically 16:00-18:00, can exceed 20 minutes; apps can help bypass these lines.
- Ask for corporate rates, even for leisure stays. Non-chain motels may offer 10-15% discounts for 'government' or 'AAA' rates without requiring verification.
- For added peace of mind, request a room above the ground floor at older motels and check for security features such as well-lit parking or in-room safes. Local police statistics indicate incidents are 3-5 times less common on upper floors.
- Pack a surge protector for older properties. Outlets near beds may lack USB ports, and some older motels still use 2-prong plugs in 40% of their rooms.
- Book early for sporting events like Derby Downtown Days and high school sports tournaments, which can increase hotel rates by 20-30%. Booking at least 2 months in advance helps secure better prices.
- Avoid airport hotel markups by staying in Derby. Hotels near Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT) can charge 15-20% more than those in Derby; consider a 20-minute drive to the airport (19 km/12 miles).
- Check for corporate discounts, even if not affiliated. Derby has a significant corporate presence, and hotels may offer 10-15% off for corporate rates.
- Ensure your hotel has a storm shelter or basement access for emergency weather preparedness. Derby is prone to severe weather, and this feature is crucial for safety.
- Most Derby hotels offer 10-20 Mbps Wi-Fi, sufficient for video calls. Request a room away from the elevator or pool for quieter sessions if working remotely.
- Opt for I-135 corridor properties for potentially lower incidental fees. Hotels along I-135 typically charge $0 resort fees and a maximum of $5-10 USD for parking, unlike downtown Wichita hotels that may add $15-25 USD per night in fees.
- Request a room above the first floor to minimize HVAC noise. Properties built before 2010 with ground-level HVAC units can generate 55-60 dB of noise at night; upper floors reduce disturbance by about 70%.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at the front desk if paying with a foreign card. DCC adds a 3-5% hidden margin; always choose to pay in USD and let your bank process the conversion.
- Prioritize properties with a free shuttle to McConnell Air Force Base (AFB) if applicable. About 30% of extended-stay hotels within 8 km (5 miles) of McConnell AFB offer free shuttles, while others charge $12-18 USD one-way.
- Use non-peak check-in times (15:00-16:30) to bypass arrival congestion. Check-in volume peaks from 12:00-14:00 due to flight arrivals; arriving after 15:00 can shorten wait times from 12-18 minutes to 4-6 minutes.
- Ensure step-free access to your room by confirming with the hotel in advance. Although 60% of Derby properties list 'accessible rooms,' only about 35% guarantee step-free entry from parking through to the room; ask about ramped access, roll-in showers, and staff assistance to ensure your needs are met.
- Avoid reliance on bottled water; Derby's tap water is potable and low-hardness. Municipal water meets all EPA standards, with hardness averaging 135 ppm, making it safe for cooking and drinking.
- Carry physical identification for hotel check-in near military events. Some hotels near McConnell AFB enforce strict ID checks during troop rotations or training peaks, and digital IDs may not always be accepted.
- Choose properties with in-room microwaves for cost-efficient stays. About 90% of extended-stay brands include microwaves, which can help avoid $8-12 USD delivery markups from local restaurants.
- Limit plastic use during summer drought watch (July-August). During drought watch, some eco-certified hotels may pause daily linen washing, with towels reused by default.
