Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I rent a car for my Punta Cana adventure?
Renting a car in Punta Cana gives you the ultimate freedom to explore beyond your resort. You'll unlock local beaches, hidden gems, and authentic Dominican experiences at your own pace, turning your trip into a truly personalized adventure.
What's the best way to get from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) to my rental car?
Most rental car companies at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) operate off-site shuttles to their pick-up locations. Once you've collected your luggage, just look for signs or ask airport staff for directions to the designated shuttle pick-up zone, and a quick ride will have you at your vehicle in no time.
What types of rental cars are available in Punta Cana?
You'll find a wide range of vehicles to suit your travel style, from compact cars perfect for solo explorers or couples, to spacious SUVs ideal for families or groups. Consider a sedan for comfortable cruising or a rugged 4x4 if you plan on venturing off the main roads.
Do I need special insurance to rent a car in Punta Cana?
While your personal car insurance might offer some coverage, it's often wise to consider local insurance options. Companies typically offer Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and liability insurance. CDW covers damage to the rental car, while liability covers damages to other vehicles or property. It's smart to review your options and choose what makes you feel most confident on the road.
Can I use my home country's driver's license in the Dominican Republic?
Generally, a valid driver's license from your home country is accepted for up to 90 days in the Dominican Republic. It's always a good idea to also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a supplementary document, especially if your license isn't in English or Spanish. This can make interactions with local authorities smoother.
Are there any age restrictions for renting a car in Punta Cana?
Most rental companies in Punta Cana require drivers to be at least 21 years old. Drivers under 25 might be subject to a young driver surcharge, which is a common practice. Always check the specific rental company's terms and conditions when booking.
What documents do I need to pick up my rental car?
You'll typically need a valid driver's license, a major credit card in the primary driver's name for the security deposit, and your rental confirmation or voucher. Having these ready will ensure a quick and easy pick-up process.
Are there toll roads in Punta Cana or the Dominican Republic?
Yes, there are some toll roads in the Dominican Republic, particularly on major highways connecting cities. For example, the highway from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana has tolls. Rental cars usually don't come with an electronic toll pass, so you'll need to pay cash in local currency (Dominican Pesos). Keep small denominations handy.
What are the local driving conditions like in Punta Cana?
Driving in Punta Cana can be different from what you're used to. Roads are generally well-maintained in tourist areas, but traffic can be unpredictable, and local driving habits can be assertive. Stay alert, drive defensively, and be aware of pedestrians and motorbikes. It's an adventure!
What's the fuel policy for rental cars in Punta Cana?
Most rental companies in Punta Cana operate on a 'full-to-full' fuel policy. This means you'll pick up the car with a full tank and are expected to return it full. It's a straightforward approach that helps you avoid extra charges and ensures you're ready to hit the road from the start.
Can I add an additional driver to my rental agreement?
Yes, you can typically add an additional driver to your rental agreement, though there might be a daily fee for this. The additional driver must also meet the rental company's age and licensing requirements. It's a great option for sharing driving responsibilities on longer journeys.
What are some popular destinations I can reach by car from Punta Cana?
With your rental car, you can easily explore beyond Punta Cana! Consider a day trip to the historic colonial zone of Santo Domingo, the charming fishing village of Bayahibe, or the pristine beaches of Macao. The freedom of a car lets you discover the rich diversity of the Dominican Republic.
What if I have an issue with my rental car in Punta Cana?
In the unlikely event you encounter an issue, your rental car company will have a 24/7 roadside assistance number available. It's wise to save this number upon pickup. Additionally, if you booked through Priceline, our customer support is always available to help you navigate any challenges and ensure your trip stays on track.
Top Tips
- Embark on your Dominican adventure by booking your car rental in advance, especially during peak seasons. Securing your vehicle beforehand at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) ensures availability and often a wider selection, setting the stage for a smooth start to your journey.
- Be sure to understand your car rental insurance options thoroughly. While basic liability coverage is often included, consider additional coverage for peace of mind, as local regulations may differ from what you're accustomed to, ensuring a worry-free exploration.
- Upon arrival at PUJ, locate your rental car counter; many are conveniently situated within or near the terminal. Confirm your pick-up process and any necessary shuttle details to swiftly begin your scenic drive through Punta Cana.
- Familiarize yourself with local driving customs and road signs in the Dominican Republic. Driving on the right side of the road is standard, but be prepared for varying road conditions and assertive local driving styles to confidently navigate your explorations.
- Utilize a reliable GPS or a local mapping app on your smartphone for effortless navigation. While exploring Punta Cana's beautiful landscapes, having clear directions will help you discover hidden gems and reach your destinations with ease.
- When parking, look for designated parking areas or ask locals for safe recommendations, especially in busier towns or near popular attractions. Secure parking ensures your vehicle is safe while you immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture.
- Always carry your valid driver's license, passport, and rental agreement with you while driving. These documents are essential and will ensure a seamless experience should you encounter any local checkpoints or need to verify your rental status.
- Be aware of the local fuel types and ensure you're using the correct one for your rental car, typically 'Gasolina Regular' or 'Premium'. Fuel stations are readily available, ensuring you can keep your adventures moving without interruption.
- Before departing the rental lot, conduct a thorough inspection of the vehicle, noting any existing scratches or dents. Documenting the car's condition with photos or videos provides invaluable peace of mind and clarity upon return.
- Plan for your return to Punta Cana International Airport, allowing ample time for traffic and the drop-off process. A relaxed return ensures a smooth transition from your incredible Dominican adventure back to your flight.
