    • We loved everything about staying at Matfen! The location in the charming countryside, surrounded by beautiful expansive grounds. Perfect for dogwalks! Such a gorgeous manor, so many beautiful rooms to lounge in, and so stunningly dressed for the holidays. The food and service absolutely perfect. The bar beguiling. The spa staff and facilities first rate The staff so warm and kind, especially generous with our standard poodle, who was so well looked after. We will be back!
    • Upgraded to phenomenal comfortable suite.Staff were very friendly and trying to make the stay memorable. Grace, in reception, was exceptional, handling every request effortlessly. The bar and staff, added to a magical experience.Beautiful open fires, historic vibe to architecture, fixture and fittings.
    • well appointed room nice pool

    Cons -

    • No negatives. Just wish we could have stayed longer.
    • Some of the staff could do with a bit more training, despite their efforts. Sadly, housekeeping let the experience down each day, not replacing supplies and other inconsistencies. The Spa massage menu was limited and didn’t seem to have anything like a deep tissue or rigorous sports massage so we didn’t bother.
    • Balcony overlooked building site. Dinner in restaurant OK but not great.

The room , staff , place , vibe .. everything

They ask me a deposit of 100 pounds, which it was not mentioned in booking policy And until now I didn’t refund it , they told me it with my bank and so on , ETC .. If i know it before , i can bring it by cash and not having this ongoing issue ( that why I’m rating them 7 )

Everything was lovely and the building is rather special

The Service at Breakfast wasn't up to the Standards expected at this Quality of Hotel. The table was not set properly & lacked certain missing items needed. We were sat at the end of the restaurant in the window which was nice location for the views but poorly situated to get service or to call someone over if we needed anything. I had to keep getting out of my seat to ask for missing items. They brought my tea and forgot the Milk. Breakfast Cereal came and we had no Spoons. Toast arrived and several jams were missing and we didn't have any butter which again I had to go find someone to ask for some. Used items were not taken away from the Table as new ones arrived, making the table full of dirty bowls and plates, hard to juggle around and not a pleasant way to eat. The breakfast was nice but they were not attentive to us and did not ask if we needed anything until we were just about to the leave the table.

Beautiful interior & exterior, surrounded by nice gardens & golf course, especially liked the tearoom. Very comfortable rooms, huge bathroom. Very nice spa. Highly recommend.

    Everything was at top level

Beautiful property and our room was lovely and spacious. Staff was very friendly. The welcome bottle of champagne was nice too.

Check in was very slow. Nice touch with the welcome drink but we waited about 20 minutes for someone to check us in. Some construction was going on while we were there which took away from views.

Stunning, grand property. The communal spaces are absolutely gorgeous, and the bar and restaurants are excellent. The tasting menu in the Emerald Room is expensive, but worth every penny. Breakfast is outstanding. The bed was large and extremely comfortable, and the bathroom was luxurious. We had a significant service issue in the Cloisters restaurant for dinner, but the staff/hotel recovered well in the end.

Our room was in the wing near the spa and was overly warm -- air conditioning would really help in that wing, especially in spring/summer when opening the window brings mosquitos into the room. There was also work going on at the property, and our room was exposed to it. Ideally, these rooms would have been left empty until the work was done. There was no shower gel in the room, just shampoo and conditioner.

Excellent grounds and hotel. Staff were extremely helpful and courteous. The swimming pool and spa were wonderful.

The hotel was stunning, in a wonderful location. Staff were friendly, very helpful, and quick to sort out issues

Some deluxe rooms are vastly inferior to others. The first room we were given was smaller than the photos online, with a worse view and not in the original house. After speaking to the staff however we were moved to a new deluxe room, where the room was larger, with higher ceilings, a better view, and in the gorgeous original house, just like the photos. Make sure to ask in advance about the location of the room to avoid this.

Our stay couldn’t have been better. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with the utmost care and attention. The hotel generously upgraded us to the most beautiful room we’ve ever stayed in — a truly unforgettable gesture. We dined at the Keepers Restaurant on our first night and both opted for the steak, which was cooked to perfection. Breakfast the next morning was superb, with a fantastic selection and brilliant service from the staff once again. Our evening meal was exceptional — top-quality food at a very reasonable price. The spa was stunning and the perfect place to unwind. We’ll definitely be returning. It’s a fantastic hotel, made even better by the incredible staff who go above and beyond to make your stay special.

The hotel building and grounds were absolutely beautiful. The rooms were comfortable and there were lots of high end touches like fresh milk and nice toiletries. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming! Would highly recommend for a night away. The breakfast service and food was great so I’d recommend adding this to your room.

The hotel pool and facilities also used for spa days and it was quite busy at 6pm, there was nowhere to sit. We went again at 8am the next day and it was a lot quieter and more enjoyable.

Comfortable and sizeable room. Great concierge service and the food was excellent

For a five star hotel there are so many things going wrong that are so easy to fix. I quite honestly feel robbed of money based on my 3 night stay. I wouldn’t recommend it here until they’ve brushed up. The communal cloakrooms were very VERY dirty and smelly and almost every one of them had loo roll missing. The unisex cloakrooms meant that women had to enter a loo previously used by a man. Just because a man is staying in a five star does not mean he has good aim. They were revolting with pee all over the floor. The employees were all far too young. One girl serving us in cloisters openly admitted she’d never opened a bottle of wine before (whilst trying to open ours...) The service in cloisters and at breakfast was very very slow and sloppy. They need serious training. The food at the keeper’s was cold so I left it. Netflix in the room was not working and each time I called to have it fixed, I was told the ‘tech’ person was not available. The TV options were limited at best. Only 3 hangers provided in the wardrobe. This is such a simple fix and a rookie thing to offer. Anyone staying for more than one night needs more than 3 hangers - again, a small thing but really shouldn’t be happening at a 5 star.

Best hotel I have ever stayed at. Everything was fantastic. Cannot wait to return. The room was exceptional and the bathroom was out of this world. The grounds are dreamy and the staff are all well trained and a credit to the establishment and management.

    to stay longer

The staff were outstanding, from being greeted at the door to responding to personal requests the service was excellent. We had the deluxe room which was lovely, very spacious and comfortable.

    10JamesPosted on: 4-14-2025

Rural setting, lovely golf course, friendly staff

The room was a bit hot. I think maybe because it was next to the pool. We used the Dyson fan which helped a bit.
