- Actually, the ONLY thing that we liked about this place was the breakfast - a VERY nice meal prepared to order in a beautiful, historic dining room! The woman serving us was incredibly nice, and it was a very good last impression.
- The room itself was nice, the rest was mediocre at best. Hyper expensive food.
- The schloss is located in a quiet area surrounded by fields and a vineyard. There were also walking trails and quiet roads through a small village we could use to get out for the evening. The onsite restraunt was fabulous, the room was large, clean and comfortable. Included bathrobes and slippers were a nice touch. The staff was friendly. Breakfast was the usual with plenty of options. We stayed here on our way back to the Zurich airport, which was not far and it was preferable to be in a smaller town for the night.
Cons -
- My wife booked this stay, since we really love to stay in old historic hotels when we travel, but this hotel was priced as 4-star hotel, while it should honestly be rated as a 1-star at best!I am NOT a person that likes to complain, and I do NOT usually leave bad reviews for places that we don't like, But now I feel that I have to, since this hotel was SO FAR BELOW our expectations, and I felt it required a "buyer beware" for other travelers. The building itself looks nice, but our first impression was that the entry door was locked at around 15:30. When a young woman came to open the door, she told us that she was "On her break", but "she was being nice to let us in". There was really NO RECEPTION OR LOBBY area at all, with nobody to talk to or ask questions other than restaurant staff. The "Check-in" area was actually for the restaurant. After checking in, we were led up to our hotel room, which was truly a disappointment! While we normally appreciate old historic buildings with rustic finishes and decor, the rooms felt very run down and dumpy in our opinion. Normally, in an old historic castle, the rooms are furnished with older furniture that matches the feel of the space, but this hotel has decorated the rooms with very cheap furniture - including the cheapest IKEA side tables that you can buy!We had booked a "Family Room with Private External Bathroom", which is understandable - since it is an old historic building, but there was nothing "Private" about it. While I expected the "external bathroom" to be adjacent to the room, it was actually down a flight of stairs, through one hall, then up a few more stairs to another hallway. We had to SHARE our "Private" bathroom with other guests, and while we supposedly had "our own" toilet and shower, and only shared a sink, there was NOTHING to prevent other hotel guests from using them.
- We were coming in from Austria and the traffic was really heavy on a Sunday evening so we got to the hotel about 6:45 PM and we had made a reservation for dinner because you have to do that to eat there at the latest time that we could do it which is 7:30 PM. The first thing they asked us when we got there was that we could eat at 7 PM so the kitchen could go early. We said no because we wanted to shower and chill out for 20 minutes before we came down to dinner. Then the prices for dinner were pretty high. I had ravioli the large bowl for Fr.36 and had maybe 10 4 cm x 4 cm raviolis and that was it. I was hoping for more food. Tasted great. Lastly, when we checked in, no one told us that the front door was locked until at least eight in the morning. We had a flight to catch the next morning and try to leave at seven in the morning and could not get out. Apparently there’s a back door not the front door that you can get out, but no one told us this. In addition to get to that door, you have to go through another door that says rooms.(Zimmer) so it’s not intuitive to walk down a hallway that said more bedrooms. Lastly, even at eight in the morning when finally someone opened the front door after we made a phone call there was no food or anything that we could get for breakfast even though their breakfast is supposed to start at 8 AM. Just crazy never go back there again. And one last thing you would expect in a schloss like that that there would be some sitting area which would be comfortable to hang out in and read or do something, but there’s nothing. There’s just a dining room and your bedroom so once you finish dinner, there’s nothing to do except go to your room. That seemed a little ridiculous.
- There isn't an elevator so climbing with luggage is something to consider. Also, as others have mentioned there is a shared bathroom, it didn't end up being a problem for us. Each room has it's own toilet and shower room, which were clean and modern.

Breakfast was nice.
Private toilet and shower too far from our room. Ceiling of room very low, I bashed my head on the door going in and out. No hot water in room to make tea or coffee. Restaurant was full and no facility for a drink or snack.
We did not know what to expect when booking a room in a castle during winter time, especially as the price was more affordable or on par with other accommodations in the region. We were given an upgrade of our room upon arrival which was a pleasant surprise. We received a quite big, beautifully decorated room with a very comfortable armchair, and with a bathroom a couple of steps down the hall, which was not that big of a deal, especially when you think that you are in a castle, and castles did not have toilets in the room. Also the bathroom was modern, warm, and super clean so there was absolutely no problem on that end. It is still private. The location was very good for us as we had a plan to see Schaffhausen and Rheinfall and this is just 20 min drive away. We also had dinner at the hotel restaurant which was excellent as well as the wine which was from a winery below the hill. The hotel/restaurant staff were super kind, they really added a little extra to this wonderful experience. In the evening we enjoyed being in the courtyard, enjoying the silence and the view of/from the castle, it felt like we had it for ourselves. We would gladly come back, hopefully someday we will.
Super friendly staff. AMAZING food
A room closer to toilet
Such a beautiful and historic location. The castle sits on top of a hill with a commanding view of the two neighboring villages.
Everything was really good, not thing to complain about at all: clean, comfortable, high standards all around, delicious breakfast, spacious room with good facilities. We enjoyed it a lot and would highly recommend! Staff was friendly and accommodating, especially the male receptionist/waiter (not sure his official title nor name but he seemed to be ‘everywhere’) was very service minded and made an extra effort to ensure everything was in order for us and double checked to meet our needs.
it was near to the location we needed to be and its location is great, very quiet surroundings. The kitchen is excellent, breakfast is prepared fresh and served ( no buffet ) - excellent service and verf friendly staff.
the bathroom is not in the room, the are however designated, so you aren't sharing yours with others.
Beautiful site, super friendly staff, terrific restaurant
Our room had a bathroom down the hall, which was ok but not my favorite
A quaint place in the Swiss countryside. The crown jewel is the staff - very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast is rich and comes with home-baked bread.
Very friendly staff! Everything is clean and there is a nice view from the hill.
The staff was wonderful, views delightful & very clean. The breakfast was awesome!
We felt that the beds weren’t that comfortable for the price!
Great location at a very fair pricepointVery friendly welcome , food was good
Staff are awesome, dinner was amazing and the chef was very accommodating to ensure my children all had something they loved too eat.Room was very clean, sadly the double bed in my room squeaked a lot and myself and my husband did not sleep very much.My children had an excellent sleep and have asked to go back again.Breakfast was of very good quality and our complaint about our bed was taken on board with sincerity. All in all an awesome place to stay and feel at home.THANK YOU
Our bed :(
This is a top notch hotel in a beautiful castle on a hill overlooking the valley. We had an excellent dinner at the restaurant and were served a lovely breakfast. Highly recommend.
Nice place, friendly and professional staff/owners. Delicious dinner. Good beds. Lovely atmosphere in a real old castle.
The adress in booking.com is missleading, as the Hotel is in WALTALINGEN, not in Oberstammheim. Your GPS will lead you wrong if you don't notice it. This is not a fault of the Hotel! You have your own designated shower and toilet outside the room, in our case on 2nd floor, while the room was on 3rd. Since you can only close the toilet from inside, someone else had used it and didn't clean it, which was not very pleasing.
Stay and eat at the castle experience. View from the terrace, staffs, food
Bathroom is not in the room
Very friendly, helpful staff. Quiet location with a wonderful view. Our room is clean, cozy and has a private wc/shower in the room (roof floor). Excellent breakfast.
Location was amazing, tranquil surroundings. Room was very clean.Crisp and clean linnen.
