About
In Crickhowell, in the Brecon Beacons, The Bear dates back to 1432. Expect a welcoming atmosphere, old world charm and good food. Awarded Inn of the Year 2010 by the Good Pub Guide. The Bear has original features, such as a cobbled forecourt, with an old archway leading to an inner courtyard. Rooms also have an historic feel, but with modern facilities like free Wi-Fi and satellite TV. The restaurant menu often changes to suit the local ingredients available. The award-winning food is served in cozy surroundings, with open log fires or fine fresh spring flowers. The restaurant is popular, so reservations are recommended. The popular bar at The Bear has a low-beamed ceiling, with a winter log fire and many antiques. It has twice won the 'Best Pub in Britain' award. A number of real ales are served, along with vintage wines.

Great location, dog friendly and really helpful staff
What an awesome hotel, absolutely stunning setting. We had a beautiful big bedroom and staff were so lovely and friendly. And the bed was so comfortable I didn’t want to get up

Lovely warm welcome, nice room, excellent food
Stayed at The Bear several times. The hotel bar is a place of wonder, selling the ales I really enjoy, and the available food is good and if taken by the large open fire, it’s just lovely.
It is always a pleasure to stay at the Bear. It is a comfortable inn with a traditional feel, lots of charm, good service and excellent food. It is in the centre of the pretty little town of Crickhowell and on the doorstep of great walks. I had a great time and will be back!
The staff at this inn/hotel are the stars here as they provide outstanding service & that always makes all the difference to any holiday or stop over. The food was fresh and extremely well prepared and cooked, evening meal was exceptional and very reasonably priced, breakfast and lunch times meals were all superb with a wide variety of choices to suit everyone's tastes. Atmosphere during our entire stay was like going home, very welcoming and professional. Our bedroom was called "cosy" with white crispy clean bed linen and towels and was beautifully presented. With a walk in shower room which we personally prefer rather than climbing over the edge of a bath. Shower was nice and hot and powerful so despite the buildings age there were no pumping problems. Despite the cold wet January weather the hotel was warm; also there were open log fires in both public bars.
It is not a fault, it is merely an observation : As this is a coaching inn that is over 500 years old, therefore there are limitations within the building, so if you have limited mobility or perhaps have very young children then be mindful that staying in the main hotel could mean navigating narrow stairs, as there is no lift. Talk to the staff as there is a separate building within the same courtyard which may be more suitable.
Good restaurant staff.
Too many cushions supplied; they just get in the way. Enormous pair chandelier lights over bed also in the way and too powerful a light.
Good food, comfortable bed, attention to dogs.
Car park could be tricky,
This was a return visit, for a New Year's treat. As before, the hotel was very comfortable and the staff were friendly and efficient. We hadn't anticipated the lovely Christmas decorations being still up - a bonus. Food (dinner and breakfast) and drink were also excellent.
Room (2): lack of soundproofing was an issue, with noisy neighbours talking, laughing, snoring ...The bathroom extractor fan appeared not to be working.
The wonderful atmosphere in the hotel, the incredibly friendly staff, the great food and the fantastic location.
I found the bed a little hard but otherwise the room was great.
The hotel is well located in the centre of the village, which was ideal for our stay. We were able to park on site free of charge, which was a real bonus. The room was clean and comfortable, and the shower was powerful, which we really liked. We also appreciated being contacted in advance to ask whether we’d like to reserve a table for dinner - it was a helpful reminder, as we hadn’t thought to book, and we were glad we did as the restaurant gets busy. Breakfast was good.
As we had booked a “cosy room”, the bed was on the smaller side, which is worth bearing in mind when booking. The central heating wasn’t on in our room during the evening, although a fan heater was provided, which we used as our stay was during a winter cold snap. The room also felt a little on the pricey side for its size.
Crickhowell is beautiful
The food and service were poor this time.
It was a very luxurious room. It was wonderful to take the dog and he got treats and a toy too so he was happy.
The parking was very tight but I arrived at a very busy time. Big public car park was only a minutes walk away so no harm done. The food was incredible and excellent value all round. The staff were delightful. Highly recommended !
Love staying here, we have been a few times. staff are very friendly. Food is always amazing. Love the location too
Rooms are a little dated, bathroom could do with some attention (upgrading the taps, wall tiles, mirror light and radiator / heated towel rail would make a huge difference)
Welcoming and homely
We had a room across the courtyard and needed to climb quite a steep stairway which was outside. We were not advised of this when we booked!
Great service, staff were very accommodating and food was great. The dogs enjoyed the stay and will definitely be back in the new year.
Location, food, service
Tough parking, some rooms are nicer than others.
