Pros +
- The room was spacious and spotlessly clean with everything I needed for a two night stay. Check in was easy and clearly explained. The property is five minutes walk from the centre of Sherborne and approx ten minutes walk to Sherborne Abbey. I had booked a table in the bistro for Friday evening and my meal was excellent.
- Very helpful owners and excellent breakfast
- The room was very clean and quiet, and the bed was comfortable.
Cons -
- I was happy with everything about the property.
- Sadly the bistro wasn't open, but the menu looked excellent and I hope to try the food on a subsequent visit
- After a long and very difficult journey that had started 8 hours earlier, and, for a number of reasons, not having been able to stop on the way for food, I finally arrived at the Newall in the mid-evening, only to be told by the owners that no, they would not give me anything at all to eat, however basic (a sandwich, perhaps? a piece of dry toast?? I had assumed that at least a bar snack might have been available) because I had not booked into the restaurant, and they were busy. (As it happens, I had not booked a meal, because knew I would be very busy that day, and was unable accurately to predict my time of arrival.) Instead, they told me to go to a supermarket to buy my own food (I was on foot at that point, and the weather was atrocious - it was dark, raining heavily, and I was cold and soaked), and then castigated me for getting angry at their refusal. Naively, I had assumed anything called a 'bistro' which also serves breakfast on request would surely keep a basic stock of food on the premises - for which, clearly, I would have paid. But no. Consequently I went to bed extremely hungry (credit where it's due: the room was perfectly comfortable and very clean indeed.) Nevertheless, it was a really wretched start to a very busy weekend for me in Sherborne. Accordingly, I advise anyone who has booked to stay in this place not to make my mistake, but to ignore the 'bistro' name, and bring their own food, in case they, too, receive the same treatment; for although the Newell has many good reviews, it is clear from others that this establishment cannot be relied upon to offer the standard of basic, civil hospitality that one might reasonably expect.

Food was absolutely excellent. Evening meal remarkable quality and value, and breakfast delicious.Room comfortable and clean, with everything you could want.I appreciated extra touches, such as extra biscuits.
Didn't have breakfast. Convenient location for central Sherborne.
A room for two should perhaps have two rather than just one armchair in it.
Had the most relaxing rest after doing courses spotless the owners we're very helpful clean towels didn't have to request was asked if i needed anything would 100% stay again
Only one thing that was having to leave room to make tea and coffee I did find that uncomfortable that's the only thing
Nice location in a beautiful English town. Close to the Main Street. Nice room but had trouble getting heat from the radiator as it was a cool night. Nice bathroom. The rooms are over a nice bistro but it was closed. Too bad.
Food was very good.Room was simple and adequate.
Walk-in shower, spray of water all over the floor.
Unpleasant
Welcome was rude. Room was bland with TVPlayer so small was un watchable Bathroom dirty and smelt.
Excellent breakfast and a really comfy bed - both important pluses for me.
Coffee and tea in the room would have made the stay perfect.
Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. Superb food and very good value.Found free on-road parking outside.Everything very clean.
Accommodation not as good as food!Advertised king size bed but it was a standard double. I queried if I had been given wrong room. Lady insisted it was king size but next day description had been amended.Would have liked a chair in the room and tea making facilities. Only power point close to mirror for hair dryer was in alcove with no lighting.Having made these observations I would still be happy to return there!
Nothing. I couldn’t wait to leave.
I paid for an upgraded double room but I’m guessing I got a standard one, judging by the size and state of it.Decor was old and tired. The TV was the same size as the TV remote, so I got my iPad out of the car and watched that instead. Road noise from directly outside kept me awake all night.I couldn’t open a window to keep cool otherwise the road noise was even worse.Parking outside was a challenge. The whole place smelt like old food with a subtle hint of drains. No tea and coffee making facilities in the room. You have to wander down the corridor to make a brew.My morning shower was a mere dribble. The staff were miserable and somewhat pretentious. The set evening meal was tasteless and the portion sizes left me wanting. Without a doubt one of the worst meals I have ever paid for. There was no salt and pepper on any of the tables, I feared to ask for it incase I was shot down in flames in front of all the other patrons. The toilets in the bar area could do with a deep clean. Not for me sorry and I won’t ever be back.
Nice location right in Sherborne. Friendly and accommodating staff who were very helpful for our short stay.
There are lots of electrical outlets, a hair dryer, and an iron/ironing board. Although meals were not included the restaurant is very good and reasonable. The bed was comfortable and heat was available. I got help carrying my heavy baggage up stairs. The room was quiet.
My choice of pillows would be softer and the kind my head sinks into.
Location and excellent food in the restaurant
Guests next door a bit noisy
Friendly staff, very clean, tidy room , and nice to have a room you could help yourself to tea , coffee , with free bottles of water you could help yourself to so overall very pleased with our stay, definately stay again
Location was great, room was comfortable. Someone was there to greet us. Tea and biscuits in the morning.
Nothing everything was fine
Location & free parking
Road noise, no tea coffee facilities in the room.
Comfortable room. We ate in bistro which was really good food at very reasonable price
Good location for the top of the main street and bars. Upgraded room without asking, at the back, where there is less road noise. Only an issue on hot summer nights. Very nice host. Parking outside (we were lucky with space)
Would have liked breakfast included for the money. The cooking smell in the hallways but to be expected, as it is a restaurant as well.
