Pros +

  • The location, staff and food
  • Loved the location and the incredible views. Met the owner, it’s not often you get to meet the property owner.
  • Staff members were very friendly especially Richard who seemed to be the staff .The location was good close to Berwick and other Scottish Border Locations.

Cons -

  • Sadly the chef was ill when we visited. But had some good recommend pubs in the area.
  • The room was on the 3rd floor and very much the dog room .For a supposed 4 star hotel the bedroom and bathroom were very basic .The hotel was empty apart from us and we were disappointed not to be offered an upgrade.Although we do appreciate only certain rooms were available with a dog .We were also hoping to have an evening meal as it was our Anniversary but on arrival we were advised that the restaurant was closed.
  • There is nothing to dislike.

This is a lovely traditional country house hotel. I received a very warm welcome when I arrived and very attentive service throughout my stay. My room was exceptionally comfortable and inviting. Breakfast was very prettily presented and the evening meal was delicious. The garden and grounds are perfect for a short stroll or a quiet, contemplative seat with breathtaking views over the Cheviots.

There is nothing to dislike.

The only staff member we met - who acted as receptionist, porter and waiter - was excellent. The breakfast was also freshly prepared and excellent.

When we returned from our friends’ house between 9.30 and 10 pm we found all the downstairs reception rooms in darkness. Wanting a nightcap, we eventually found someone who served us 2 Armagnacs.

Pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Large rooms , beautiful setting , helpful staff and one of the best meals I have eaten !

Deeply enjoyable

Showers stepping up into baths (with no safety rails or rubber mats) too challenging for those in our 80s, as were the stairs with no lift.

Wonderful peaceful atmosphere, huge bedroom and comfortable lounges. The food at dinner was delicious and beautifully presented. The period features in the house were impressive.

Excellent room with space and comfort Service efficient and friendly Excellent variety and quality of food

Breakfast excellent. Richard was an excellent host with right balance of friendliness and efficiency. Communal areas very comfortable and relaxing with tasteful furnishings and very clean.

Room 3 was a little cramped and the furnishings a bit tired. The rattan chair was damaged . Having said that it was the cheapest room available, but a freshen up would not be too expensive and make a significant first impression impact, I believe.

Richard and staff are was amazing, breakfast delicious and place v comfortable. Noise of fire doors a little disturbing but that may have been thoughtless guests. Would only change toast to not packaged but that’s being picky as the place is so warm and deserves lots of visitors.

Very little

Beautiful room, friendly and helpful staff, excellent food (evening meal alone worth 10 stars), perfect location for a break in the Borders

Nothing to add

Lovely location, stunning views of the Cheviots

Would have been lovely to have a room with a view but other than that nothing bad to say

Lovely setting in a building you could tell was full of history and heritage. Great views, shame the weather wasn't better to enjoy the grounds. Nice room with a good comfy warm bed

It’s a beautiful property, serving outstanding food - 3 exquisite courses, changing daily. The staff was friendly and helpful.

We were put in a TINY room, with no place to put things or sit. Pictures on Booking.com site are not representative. The hotel was empty. I expressed disappointment and was moved immediately to a beautiful room 3 times its size. The room was not serviced the following day. Upon checkout, there was a charge for an upgraded room that had not been mentioned. I asked that it be removed and it was. At approximately $450 per night (with dinner), I expected better.

Stunning building

Almost empty as out of season - very limited staff - to a degree understandable but at this level not ideal
