Pros +
- The central location
- Bedroom size and it was clean and comfortable. Location.
- Excellent central location and convenient to explore Newport. Traditional Hotel, no frills, but perfectly acceptable and excellent value for money. I would certainly stay here again.. also nice to be able to have a bath in the en-suite room.
Cons -
- It was old, not clean. Marks and scratch in the bath tube. Cold room, air coming through the fan inside the bathroom. The deacription included a TV: no batter in the remote control and when turned on manually it was not updated with decoder ,not working.
- No lift mean't I had to carry bags up 3 flights of stairs thru 3 fire doors. Shower was very difficult to use and went from scalding to freezing cold when shower head was elevated. Hotel furnishings and carpet were old and worn.
- Bathroom was poor - the shower head attachment didn’t really work, we had to pour water over each other from cups to wash! Also carpet in the bathroom not great for cleanliness.

Excellent location right in the middle of town
Bathroom was poor - the shower head attachment didn’t really work, we had to pour water over each other from cups to wash! Also carpet in the bathroom not great for cleanliness.
I only liked that it was near to the bus station.
The rooms we were given were completely different from those shown in the pictures. They were far too small, with hardly any space to move around. The bathroom was dirty and even had a dead spider in it. The milk and coffee sachets provided in the room were out of date. When booking, it stated that heating was included among the amenities. However, when we asked for it to be turned on, the staff refused, saying they do not switch on the heating between April and October—even though it was quite cold that night. Overall, it was the worst experience we've had.
Location and cost
Room was tired and worn. Floor sloped from one corner to another. Bed seemed to be on a slope. Carpet looked like it was fitted with a blunt hatchet, the plug in the wash basin was held on with what looked like a rusty nail.
Shower just didn't work, very noisy with everything creaking, staff were great but fighting a loosing battle due to the poor conditions
Everything but the staff
Good location
Cold rooms. Heating not working
Nice Cosy room in town center
It needs a shower hook instead of holding it in your hands which is a very easy fix
Good location. I've stayed here before, and there is a distinct improvement. My bathroom was a huge improvement on last time, (which interestingly, on a previous visit, was carpeted!)
I arrived early in the day, too early for a check in. The staff kindly took my luggage so I could get out and about unhindered. On my return I was, in no uncertain terms, rebuked for my temerity in allowing this to happen!! and woe betide me if I ever attempted such a sneaky act again. I was looked up and down as if to say "we're keeping an eye on you matey" I was bemused rather than irritated.
A very warm welcome from staff on arrival was nice and the building is incredibly characterful. The town centre location makes it easily accessible and it was incredibly good value for money. Room was of a very good size and was clean and fresh on arrival. I think the hotel fundamentally has everything it needs but a little bit of modernisation in the rooms would go a long way!
Things were a little dated - bathroom in particular which only had a bath - no shower despite there being more than enough room for one. Soft close doors are needed - as there was a lot of noise from others entering/ leaving their rooms. I question if a carpeted bathroom is the best choice of floor covering - particularly around the toilet and bath. As I say a little bit of modernisation in the rooms would go a long way to making this establishment rival budget hotel chains.
It was cheap
The decor, no shower, no hot water, radiator did not work just cold, lucky i like cold rooms. The wood chip on the walls
I recently stayed at Calverts Hotel on the Isle of Wight, and I had a fantastic experience. From the moment I arrived, the staff were absolutely amazing—friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help. The hotel’s cleanliness was outstanding, with incredibly high standards maintained throughout my stay. The location is perfect, right in the heart of the town, making it easy to explore and find great places to eat. Plus, it’s conveniently close to other attractions, making it a great base for exploring the island. Considering all of this, the hotel offers excellent value for money, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Isle of Wight.
I had a great experience and highlighted the positive aspects of the hotel; however, there were a few drawbacks. You can hear the wood creaking whenever someone walks outside the room. Additionally, if someone upstairs is using the bathroom, the sound carries quite clearly into the rooms below, which can be a bit disruptive.Parking during the daytime is a challenge, but after 6 PM, you can park for just £2 until 8 AM, which is convenient for overnight stays. Despite these issues, the hotel’s location is great—right in the heart of town, making it easy to explore nearby attractions. If you don’t mind the quirks of an older building, it can still be a decent place to stay.
Very Cheap. But i was asked the show Identification on arrival which I didn't have some had to show a face book account to prove it was me......!
Badly staffed.
Room was comfortable and warm Location was great
Tv remote didn’t work Had no shower Walls were thin and very noisy couple next door which made me feel very uncomfortable
Location was excellent for the Quay Arts Centre and only a 5 minute walk from the bus station.
Unfortunately being a pleasant Saturday night there were loads of teenagers across the road from the hotel enjoying themselves until 4 am in the morning. We had a bedroom facing the front so were disturbed all night. Not sure what the Hotel can do about this!
Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy
The time it took to get hot water, enamel in bath all chipped uncomfortable, towels to small and poor, the whole room was cold and dated even after turning the radiator on
Staff very friendly, room clean and comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities and a large room.
The decor is very dated and the bath very old.
staff were very welcoming and friendly and helpful .. the room was clean , all facilities within worked well.. bed was comfy and warm ... reasonably priced
Good area. Night receptionist helpful
TV didn't work, noisy plumbing. Needs revamping in some areas. Old style furniture. My room faced a wall. Rooms were not sound proof so could hear next door clearly. The bath was badly chipped with rust around plug. Floor uneven and floor creaked a lot
