About
This 17th-century Basque convent, set on the banks of the River Cadagua, has been carefully converted into a luxury hotel that still retains much of its historic charm. Surrounded by the beautiful landscape of the Arcentales and Mena valleys, this tranquil rural retreat was originally known as the Monastery of Santa Clara and was originally built in 1666. Nowadays, luxury rooms and comfortable lounge space surround the ancient cloisters. After a relaxing day in the clean air you can return to the hotel restaurant to try some of the traditional Basque cuisine prepared in the kitchen’s oak oven and grill, which can be washed down with some of the best wines northern Spain has to offer.

- There was no breakfast available and I did'nt try the restaurant for lunch as i had already arranged lunch elsewhere. But the building is steeped in history and very tranquil. The church attached to the convent is now a museum (free entrance) and definately worth a look. Would I stay there again? ABSOLUTELY.Just one niggle (not the fault of the hotel), I parked my classic Jaguar in their huge empty free car park, and another guest parked so close to me I was concerned that they might mark my paintwork if they fully opened their doors whilst unloading their luggage. I asked them to kindly use one of the other 50 empty spaces and was met by verbal abuse. However, they did move their car. But when I came out in the morning I discovered that they had moved their car back even closer to mine after I had gone to bed. UNBELIEVABLE...
- Fabulous building with plenty of parking. Room was big and everything we needed there. Easy to find location and had a cafe and restaurant on site but we didn’t use these. Good communication regarding checking in as we were on route.
- Very clean rooms. Complimentary water, juice and snacks in room. Staff friendly and helpful. Excellent food and wine at very reasonable prices. I am gluten free and they catered very well for my dietary requirements. Excellent location right next to bus stop with direct bus to Bilbao and short walk to centre of town. The building is full of character and historical interest. I have stayed here several times now and I will be back again. Very good value for money.
Cons -
- Only issue for our room was kettle base had to move onto floor as didn’t reach any socket from where it was.
- It’s all about food. And it’s not just in the hotel it’s all around the city! After 19:00 it’s impossible to find restaurants that are working.
- Very dark

Recommend to visit it for a night. It’s a very, very small city with 0 locations to visit for the next day.

The hotel was an old convent so it was unique but it lacks lighting we could barely see when we walked in.
Very dark
Splendid accommodation arranged around the covered inner courtyard of a former monastery. Good food.
Shower height not adjustable. No heating in the bathroom. No under-cover bike storage.
Late check in, extra wishes we’re considered very friendly
Building and room were fantastic.out of hours courtesy, extraordinary.Great location.
Would have lover restaurant and bar to be open, but did not not ruin stay.
good location
the staff was very unhelpful. we were traveling with bikes and they had a lot of rules that disallowed us to use the shuttle, pack in our rooms, have our bike bags accessible. no accommodation was made to help. we are planning on walking to the airport
Comfortable room.
We booked this hotel because the details stated it had a restaurant. When we asked, a few days before arrival, if we needed to reserve a table we were informed that the restaurant was closed, but that residents could book an evening meal but had to choose from the menu; this was difficult to do as we were then touring the Picos de Europa with poor phone signal. Why could the hotel not tell us at the time of booking that this would be the case and we would have been able to choose a meal? Very disappointed.Arriving in the dark it was difficult to find the hotel entrance from the car park, the black sign did not show up. The sat nav directions took us to the front of the hotel, not the car park and there were multiple one way streets making it difficult to find the car park entrance.
The restaurants were not open!
Bar closed early, no food available, very limited staffomg
Nice old building secure parking rooms were comfortable
No evening meal available plus the town has no restaurants open on a Monday. We ended up buying a few items from the local supermarket and eating same in our room with a penknife as our cutlery.
Historic building very well restored and maintained, staff were helpful, especially the bar lady who offered to prepare a light dinner even though the restaurant was closed on a Monday. There is free secure parking. The convent is centrally located a short walk from the main square where there are bars and restaurants. Tea & coffee making facilities in the room (which not many Spanish hotels seem to offer). Only 30 minutes from Bilbao, so easy access to ferry home.
No suggestions.
I loved the location. The property was a little run down but the room was comfortable. Online check in was ideal but the lack of staff was a concern. I went to the restaurant for an evening meal but there was nobody around to speak to despite in being advertised as open. I was a little disappointed with this property.
Lack of staff. The property was also a little run down.
A beautiful old building with friendly staff. Great location.
Nada
Goood sized bedroom with old stone walls.Large comfortable bed with tea and coffee in room.General atmosphere of an old convent building.
As listed ,this provider has a reception desk staffed between 12 noon and 6pm only.Outside those times the place really cant be cslled a 'hotel' as the chance of meeting any staff is as likely as meeting one of the origional nuns who inhabited this building. They have a bar area but nobody about to serve drinks .A restaurant ,which opens for one hour mid week between 830pm and 930pm only in the evening yet is open for lunches.A 'hotel' cateers to its guests by employing staff to make their stay relaxing and providing 24 hr services.Self check in after 6 pm and a one our dinner service does not make you a hotel.
Beautiful buildingFriendly staffExcellent restuarantLots of parkingGood location near to the centre of townGood value for money
The village is adorable, lovely walks down near the river, pet friendly.
Breakfast was very simple.
The building is beautiful. The bed was comfortable. There were a few bars around (although not much choice for food on a monday evening). Walking distance from the train station (1 hour on local train to Bilbao; also 1 slow but scenic train a day west towards Arija and Leon). You are well away from the summer crowds in Bilbao, and the centre of Balmaseda is quiet and attractively pedestrianised. The price for bed and breakfast was reasonable at 89 euros, although no breakfast was forthcoming (see below).
We were not given continental breakfast as promised in our contract with booking.com. When we pointed this out (the night before and in the morning) they just said sorry, we will try not to do it again. Not good enough. This is probably due to a lack of staff: the place seems to be run remotely and without much security (perhaps this is not necessary in Balmaseda). Arriving in the evening (having checked in and paid online), we just walked into the hotel and let ourselves into the open room. There was a restaurant in the building (looked good) but on the monday evening we were there it operated only from 08.30-09.30.The room (no12) needed airing when we arrived, the sink did not drain properly, and the showerhead needed attention.
Nice dog friendly place with free parking. Staff were very nice and helpful.
