Pros +
- This hotel was wonderful! Mdina is a special place and this is a special hotel. The owners have spent 14 years renovating this historic building. Omar one of the owners informed me that the walls in the room we were staying in were 700 years old!
- New small boutique hotel in the historic town. Mdina doesn’t have too many options for higher end accommodation but it is much better experience to stay there than in the nearby town of Rabat.
- Beautiful, historic palace hidden away on a quiet street in the magical city of Mdina. Am so glad I spent the night to truly enjoy the “Silent City” in its true form. The Palazzo Bifora was the perfect place to stay within easy walking distance to all. The room was charming and cozy, the staff were kind and helpful and the rooftop pool and restaurant were an added bonus.
Cons -
- Nothing!
- Guests should be warned ahead that the taxi can’t reach the hotel and they will have to arrive by foot. It’s not a long walk but it would be nice to know ahead of time.I “huge” shortcoming is the fact that if you ask for water during your already prepaid breakfast they ask you to pay for it!! I’ve paid over 200 euros for the room already! The hotel is new (in the old palazzo) and very clean. The place is very nice but, in my opinion, overpriced.
- Lighting was poor for reading in the bedroom.

This is a pocket palace in the ancient city of Mdina. The rooftop restaurant was a great place to go and hang out, have a drink, or have dinner. They also served us a wonderful breakfast every morning. Our room was smallish, but there were places to sit and work or read in our atrium, in the lobby, or on the roof. But where Palazzo Bifora truly shines is in its staff. Everyone was so helpful, friendly, responsive, and obliging. It was a pleasure talking to several of them. They were what made our stay truly special. They are why we would choose this place first when we return to Mdina.
Location excellent, right in the heart of Mdina. Very crowded during the day, but lovely relaxed vibe once day trippers had gone. Good breakfast.
Lighting was poor for reading in the bedroom.
Beautiful Hotel in the quiet streets of Mdina - very nice (albeit small) room with a high end bathroom. The restaurant and pool area were stunning, very good cocktails at the bar. The staff very attentive. Mdina itself is stunning - highly recommend.
The hotel is beautifully designed, with appealing architecture and thoughtful interiors.•The location is excellent, right within the city walls. It was peaceful, central, and exclusive. •We appreciated the thoughtful gestures of complimentary prosecco and fruit on arrival. •Beds and pillows were extremely comfortable, making for a great night’s sleep. Robes and slippers were available in one of our suites, but not the original suite we were in. •Reception staff were responsive and quickly resolved the room issues described below by upgrading us, which we really appreciated. Though it appears they’re quite understaffed, as they seemingly serve multiple roles of reception and waiting tables, the staff we dealt with were very kind, professional, and warm.
The Agatha suite was a major disappointment. It’s much darker and more cramped than photos suggest, with limited storage, awkward access, and a noticeable sewage smell from the tub drain. Its location right by the cafe also meant no privacy when entering or exiting the room. It’s simply not representative of a “king suite” and does not justify the rate charged.•Breakfast service was very slow, taking well over 90 minutes for basic items like scrambled eggs and toast. The food quality didn’t match the hotel’s price point or aesthetic.•The hotel feels somewhat disorganized and understaffed, which affects service quality and guest experience. •Motion sensor lights in the upgraded suite were frustrating, either staying on constantly or not activating when needed, with no manual control.•The rooftop pool area is shared with the restaurant, so it doesn’t offer much comfort or privacy for guests wanting to relax or swim. The setup makes lounging feel awkward as non-hotel patrons come and go for meals. In such a small space with sun bathers in swimsuits close beside diners, the identity crisis of this rooftop becomes more apparent and difficult to ignore. We feel this hotel has great potential, but it currently feels torn between multiple identities—hotel, restaurant, cafe, and pool lounge—which dilutes the overall guest experience. With more clarity and refinement in its service and room standards, it could be a great high-end hotel.
In the heart of Mdina, down a little side street there is a lovely hotel with a beautiful central courtyard. We had a room with a double bed downstairs and another sofa be on a mezzanine floor - perfect for friends travelling together. The room was very comfortable and there was welcoming fizz and a fruit bowl. The rooftop terrace is nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Great location
Palazzo in the old center.
We booked the so called presidential suite. The bathroom looks fine, but it is a disaster to take a shower. At night, the cover of the bed is insufficient for the cold. At night, there was a lot of noise in the neighbourhood. No reception available at night, in the morning staff starts at around 6.30 AM with a lot of noise. You are awake, no doubt! Breakfast starts at 8.30 AM. We had to wait until 9.30 AM for a coffee and a toast. No excuses! So we paied a fortune for one night and a very poor breakfast. While checking out, the cleaning lady claims we broke a cheap glass. They claimed 7 euro for this cheap Ikea-like glass. This after all the bad service and the noisy stay! Note they claim your credit card by arrival and the copy your card and CVC-code without asking. So they can take refunds. When you leave a stain in the room or God knows what else: you could maybe take a loan. You are warned!
Delightfuly restored old town house at the heart of Mdina. Upgraded room as only couple staying. Lovely hand crafted breakfast and very helpful and well trained staff.
Low season, rooftop restaurant opened Thurs- Sun and pool closed. Had problems opening front door at night with keycard - there was no night porter.
Quaint and steep in history. Friendly staff. Location.
Room rather small.
The decor, style and location were great.
The two staff we met, though pleasant, were not well trained. Breakfast was solitary and fairly minimal. We booked and paid for a Suite with Balcony and were told no rooms had balconies! Our room was small and bathroom tiny! We were told the owner/manager would be there to speak with us before our departure but this did not happen.
I liked it was within the gates of Mdina. This boutique hotel is very new maintaining the historical elements of the building. The rooms were all different and charming named after streets in Mdina. The proprietors were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was delicious.
Not really anything i didn’t like about the hotel.
We had a wonderful two-night stay at Palazzo Bifora right after our wedding day, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. From the moment we arrived, Priscila greeted us warmly and was always happy to assist with anything we needed. She surprised us with a complimentary room upgrade, and we stayed in the Murina room, which was spotless, beautifully maintained, and incredibly comfortable. The heating worked flawlessly, including the bathroom tiles which had underfloor heating! The entire experience was excellent, with the staff going above and beyond to make our stay special. Highly recommended!
Something to keep in mind if you’re an older couple: whilst the hotel isn’t in the middle of nowhere, it is in an area where cars cannot enter, even taxis, so you’ll have a short 2 minute walk with your luggage in order to make it to the hotel from the closest drop off point.
Location, well appointed
There was an issue with described room on booking and the room offered.
Location
Very small room and tiny bathroom.
This hotel deserves all the reviews I had read, I was in the King Suite on the ground floor off the covered atrium / foyer. The room had a great stone vaulted ceiling and the bathroom was impressive. While the upper floor rooms my be bigger or even glitzier with windows that look at the walls acoss the alley, I think my room encompassed the history of Mdina. The service from arrival to departure was great, they let me have the room early and the hotel is easy to find only a short walk from either the the main Mdina gate where buses and taxies drop off or from the Greek gate where you can park a car (little bit of up hill). Mdina is worth at least a night, seeing and hearing the silent city when the day tourist traffic have gone is refreshing compared to Valletta, you seem to have the place to yourself. The breakfast on the roof was fine, but don't expect magic views, other than other roofs as most surrounding buildings are the same height, but it is still a nice place to turn off and have a drink. When you want to visit Rabat next door head out the Greek gate which takes you onto Triq San Pawl and to the Catacombs which are worth a look and in addition there is a bus stop near the roundabout back to Valletta (5 series buses) for a fraction of the cost of a taxi.
In the Booking.com discription of the King Suite in said 'This suite's standout feature is the rooftop pool' I think it should read the 'This hotel's' because I didn't see any accommodation off the roof level and my suite was on the ground floor. The use of a lot of smart light switching in the room can be annoying as some lights fade out and you think you pushed the wrong switch. The only issue in the stay was the light in the bar fridge would not turn off as the door switch was broken so I hug a bath towel over the fridge door to block the light.
This hotel feels very special
It was much better 12 months ago when Ivan was there! Rooms are now falling apart, feels like the new owners forgot to stay in their hotel - the designer quality of the rooms are amazing but the lack of attention to detail spoils it! My curtains were falling off the wall and fittings! Most annoying was the light sensor in bathroom that turns off after 20 seconds leaving you in pitch black darkness waving around like an idiot in the middle of the night! Toilet flush was very hard to press and toilet seat hinges were broken so kinda felt like a developing country … oh dear!! Check in also was v slow and clunky with three blokes unable to help or speak properly
Beautiful building, friendly helpful staff, great location
Our room was very small, was called a suit I can’t think why!
Great location and lovely staff. Rooms were nice.
The ground floor room has no windows and smelt damp and airless. I moved rooms.
