Pros +
- Absolutely stunning views from our balcony and plenty of space in the lovely wardrobe for our toiletries. Leo and Leondro (father and son) were amazing hosts .. fantastic breakfast each morning included. Tiramisu to start the day isn’t a bad way to start . Elevator to our room was wonderful. The whole staff was so friendly and welcoming! Beautiful beach club E20 for 2 with umbrella and restaurant.. we shopped in town and brought a picnic and purchased prosecco from the restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere and lovely restaurants in Moneglia. Small scenic walk into town with amazing sea views.. close to train station and about 25 min train to cinque terre. would definitely stay again!
- The location with the nearby beach was fantastic, and the small town of Moneglia felt truly magical. It’s a place where you can experience genuine Italian life. The breakfast was great too — everything fresh and homemade. The beachfront café was a real highlight, serving good cocktails and delicious food.
- We booked this property months in advance and less than 24 hours prior to our stay we received a call saying they “overbooked” us and had put us in a different hotel. Upon our arrival, I believe they had a problem with our room (language barrier). They did put us in an amazing hotel though that was right by the beach and in town close to everything. The hotel we ended up staying at was Piccolo Hotel. Highly recommend it
Cons -
- The shower and toilet were leaking, and the hotel was not nearly as well-maintained as it appeared on Booking.com. So, if one is looking to spend a lot of time in their hotel room, this will not be the right place.
- The toilet in our room was so close to the sink, that we had to sit sideways to fit our legs. The shower is also very small, so be prepared if you are a taller individual with long arms like me. The hotel did not provide any ice (which we wanted for our water since it was so hot), and when asked they had to turn on the ice machine which takes multiple hours to provide any ice, and then was immediately turned off so there was no ice the following day (at which point we gave up). The staff (mainly a father and his son) were helpful but usually responded that they would take care of our issues later or tomorrow. Their outlets do not accomodate the EU plug, which we did not know so come prepared with an italian adapter. The coffee was not good even with the proprietor making it fresh to order. The in house restaurant was only for breakfast and not open for dinner to our understanding. They do not allow you to use their water dispensor for your own use, only during breakfast.
- Check in was terrible took over an hour to get checked in and we were the only ones there , there was never anyone on the front counter and for two days there was a stack of paperwork with all the guests personal info with copies of passports etc in plain view for everyone to look at !!! it was very confusing . No one ever worked the bar so there was no way of getting a drink , The restaurant was closed for dinners , both hot tubs were out of service , there was a lot of screaming and yelling between staff this was very unprofessional, We thought we prepaid the hotel like all of our other hotels but this was our fault but they would not take a visa payment and wanted bank transfer so I refused to pay until they finally sent me a visa payment request one month later then I payed for our stay. This is a very unorganized hotel . never going back !!!

Honest review: To start, we would definitely come back to Hotel Leopold but there were definitely issues. Overall, the hotel was comfortable, with very strong air conditioning in each room, and a comfortable bed, even though the room was a bit small. The staff were very kind and helpful. Overall the breakfast was very good, with many options of sliced meats, cheeses, savory and sweet baked goods, and fresh fruit. The provided parking was very nice and affordable for only 10 euro per day. The best part of this hotel is the location, which is a 10 minute walk from the main city. This is the only hotel in Moneglia directly on the water, and unlike the main beach in Moneglia, which is protected from the open sea by a large rock barier, the beach in front of the hotel was open to the sea so we were still able to hear the waves. This plus the view of the ocean were truly unbeatable.

nice view from the window. good breakfast.
not very clean. really small room. very expensive. you hear everything around, from the WC, from another rooms etc. I don't get it. Do people like listening to each other's sounds in the WC?
The family atmosphere and great breakfasts. The sea view was amazing even in cloudy weather
The walk from the hotel into Moneglia was very difficult and caused me to suffer a very sore knee. The severity of the walk should be clearly stated on the Booking.com site.
from booking into the hotel everything was very straight forward. all the staff we met were polite friendly and helpful. the rooms were clean, great view of the med, Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choices to satisfy most clients. The swimming pool was regularly cleaned. the sun terraces was a great place to sit and enjoy the great weather and view. A great value hotel nearby restaurants were great. overall very impressed we hope to return again.
we liked everything about the hotel and the local town. A great base to tour the cinque terre and portofino by rail as the station was an easey walk away
The hotel manager and all the staff were so pleasant! We enjoyed the location and the breakfast. We had a corner room so the two balconies with the panoramic view of the sea was incredible. The breakfast was delicious and had great variety. We asked the hotel manager if they had a shuttle/car to the train station. He noticed our luggage and took us in our own car! The sweetest!
We had everything we needed and no complaints!
The location and the view of Hotel Leopold are absolutely amazing. Just above the ocean with a view across the bay of Moneglia and a 10 minute walk from the city and the beach (3 minutes), there is little to be desired. Also it felt very safe and cozy as the main entrance was always open and welcoming. The staff was very forthcoming to us asking for a late checkout and everyone always has a smile on their face. Even with limited Italian, we were always able to make each other understood. Since it is a family run hotel, it has a certain level of cozyness and calmness and the interior decoration with the many statues and marble figures gave it an amazing Italian flair. Lastly, Hotel Leopold had the best breakfast buffet we had in 2 weeks of Italy. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, good juices and freshly made coffee - all that with the amazing view. It is very hard to top this as a start to your day.
Reception is rarely occupied and we had to call the hotel to get our checkout done.
Great location, fantastic large and home-made breakfast. Very friendly and supportive staff
We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Leopold. The place is clean, breakfast is nice and diverse, the place feels welcoming and authentic. Leandro and his father run the business and are very friendly and helpful. The view is stunning. We can’t wait to come back!
- Breakfast was superb with a variety of options from sweet to savoury, home-made cakes and tarts, a good selection of cheeses and fruit. Staff were very polite and kind. Breakfast on the first floor with sea-view; - amazing sea view from the balcony
- the centre of the village is only 10 minutes walk, however you need to walk up and down the hill and with high temperatures in summer, it gets a bit tiring and sweaty
View. Buffet breakfast. Balcony on room. Outstanding pool and deck. Sooo close to beach . Beautiful undulating small walk to Town. Family run - excellent people skills from the son.
Location is good and the view is magnificent
Looked short staffed, like only one person working there. The aircon worked very poorly so was always hot. Staff showed up in our room one day when we were relaxing with a plumber and went on to fix toilet in the bathroom (we had no issues with toilet).
Very nice Family Hotel. Amazing view. Very good breakfast!
Exceptional View, lovely staff and hospitality. Leo, his mother and his sun, Leandro are amazing persons and they look after you whatever need you have!
Great view, good breakfast. Top location. Friendly staff.
Needs an update but great value for money.
Very quiet location. In fact I slept better here than at home. As we visited about two weeks before high season not many propel present at the hotel nor in the city. 5 minutes walking distance to the train station as well as to downtown Moneglia.
The fantastic little Hotel Leopold boasts a unique location on a hillside overlooking the sea, just a few steps from the beach. All the rooms have private balconies with sea view. The hotel is pretty, the rooms are well-equipped. Breakfast is far beyond expectations, including fresh fruit, tasty vegetables, and fresh cakes beside the usual croissants, crumbled eggs etc. An extraordinary, terraced pool landscape invites to swimming, wellness, and relaxing for hours. This family-run hotel is a true discovery!
