Pros +
- Owners very friendly. Food was really good. Lots of fun at the bar area.
- Great location and lovely hosts
- Lovely owners, delicious food at dinner and fresh croissants for breakfast!
Cons -
- It was all good
- No charging for e-bike
- Althouth the hotel fully discloses the fact that there is no elevator, heavily burdened and or elderly guests may be daunted by the two flights of stairs if given a room on the deuxième étage. The hotel's staff will help with the trudge, however. I visited just prior to Christmas eve so I was disappointed not to be able to sample the restaurant's fare, but this would be the case with practically any other hotels.

It has large rooms, well appointed bathroom and is situated in a quiet small town. No parking worries.
What a little gem of a hotel. The owners went above and beyond during my stay and you can really feel that they take a lot of pride in what they do. The rooms are cozy beautifully arranged. And then the restaurant really impressed with beautifully executed dishes at such a reasonable price. The chef/owner really knows how to cook In fact I would love to come back just for the food there ! Breakfast was really good and not to be missed
The petite déjeuner was a cut above the rest, in this class. 'loved the proprietors / operators! The location is superb, although in the summertime when the windows must be opened the amount of agricultural and industrial truck traffic through Varennes might be annoying. In many ways this hotel is a gem along the lines of a traditional French estaminet in that the owners live in it and the centrally located kitchen is adds much charm to the property and its operation.

Varennes-en-A is, today, a sleepy rural town largely forgotten by the wider world. Gone is it's importance as a farmers market, gone are most of the agricultural workers; it's by-passed by bigger and faster roads and no longer enjoys a prime crossing of the Aire. And so it is, sadly, for Hotel du Grand Monarque. Gone are its days of bustle and traffic, gone is the money to refubish and bring into the modern world. It is run with slightly fraught enthusiasm by a young couple who are aware of the huge problem they face in attracting enough trade to produce the revenue to allow modernisation of this grand old building. I had to wait in the bar opposite until the doors finally creaked open and I was allowed access to my room as rececption is very much not 24hrs. As is usual in France, my room was on the third floor, with no lift, which for a 70 year-old is quite a way up. It would be unkind to list the oddities about the room, but there was good hot water for the walk-in shower. Overnight, huge agricultural lorries and tractors would occasionally crash and rattle through the village which was something of a disturbance. The restaurant was a different matter, the evening meal I had was from a limited menu but it was truly excellent using local ingredients very well handled. Breakfast simple but adequate.
An overall feeling of gloom and the disturbance by the heavy traffic.
Lovely staff and service. Incredible food.
Bed was not super comfy (but was okay).
Nice location. Clean rooms. Nice bar. Excellent food. The hosts were great. The chef managed to prepare a beautiful and tasty vegan dish in no time for our daughter.Beware of the church bell at 7.00am Sunday Morning :)
Hotel & restaurant is managed by a young couple, who have been very helpful and super friendly. I had a wonderful, typical French dinner in the evening and a very good breakfast in the morning after.
I didn’t like the synthetic fabrics of bed linen
Lovely welcome, comfortable room and excellent food
charming , lovely people and a delicious meal cooked perfectly by the chef.
the stairs could be a problem for older people.
Quaint hotel with character. Ideal for a stopover. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The food was excellent and good value for money
Staff, food, location and prices.
No AC.
great place to stay, clean, comfortable, great food and most of all the young couple who run the place are friendly and accommodating, I could even put my Harley Soft tail slim in their garage overnight, perfect.
Friendly and generous hosts, historic building in a tranquil village.
Nice young owners, and very obliging. The location is superb for touring the battlefield sites and contemplating history. The hotel is in a beautiful old building directly opposite an historic church.
A major renovation was done to create a contemporary ambiance. I understand that younger people will approve of this change, but sadly for me it means there is one less old-fashioned quirky French hotel for me to visit. They are a disappearing breed that I (and friends of my own age) appreciate for their character, charm and interest.
Beautiful Hotel! The owners are exceptional, and they speak great English. The food in the restaurant was some of the best I have had in France. The WiFi is the best I have encountered in a hotel. I will definitely stay here again when in the area, and highly recommend this hotel as the perfect location when checking out Verdun and the sites.
Nice room and very professional staff
Our hosts, Alexander and Madeline are so very nice and friendly ❤️!
