Perched at 3.6 feet in the Serra de Bornes, Alfândega da Fé Hotel is a mountain retreat built around silence, altitude and views of the Douro that most guests won't believe are real until they see them from the balcony. Rooms range from older, more traditional units to newly renovated ones, no two quite alike, but every room looks out over the Vale da Vilariça, so the view is never the compromise. The spa runs on two pools that couldn't be more different. Outside, an infinity pool suspended over the Vale da Vilariça turns a swim into something closer to floating above the valley. Inside, a second pool with jacuzzi and water jets takes over when the weather doesn't cooperate, alongside the sauna and Turkish Bath. The restaurant serves traditional Portuguese cuisine built on fresh, local produce, with the same valley view, and the reading room and bar are built for slowing down rather than filling an itinerary. For guests who want to move, the property has a well-equipped fitness center, with hiking trails and river canoeing close by. Alfândega da Fé Hotel is less a stop on a route through the Douro than a reason to plan the route around it.

The hotel need an urgent maintenance, the only one should had be on the opening. They only focus on the out side which wasn't available during my stay. Didn't had a bottle of water on the room. The reception could be better. The inside pool had cold water, didn't want to risk to dinner to avoid on being a complete waste of time. The breakfast didn't had much. The place looked like a maze. This clearly is not a 4 star hotel. I have seen 2 star hotels with better conditions. Sorry for the critics but I had to leave my honest feedback, and I hope you to improve very soon,because right now it is a complete waste of money. Almost forgot to say, but the pictures of the room are not accurate at all (didn't check the other rooms, but my room was like a garage)

There isn't much activities to do, a game room, or other leisure facilities.There were some small fixed needed, like wall outlets, floor lights not properly isolated.The breakfast had very little choices for food, there wasnt even a espresso or cappuccino machine, only vegetable milk option was soy.The food in the restaurant was just OK, expected more.
The views are breathtaking, overlooking the valley below with the Douro in the distance. This quiet tranquility, allows you to unwind, recharge, reflect on the beauty in these parts of Portugal.
The Spa, is a far cry from what it used to be a number of years back. There are NO activities - the only thing going here is the pool. The rooms are dated, hopefully with the renovations that are underway, it will once again become the pride of Alfandega da Fe.
Breakfast was poor. Don’t expect instant coffee from a thermos flask at a 4 star hotel.
All the advertisements indicated something that wasn’t actually there or available.Given hairdryer with leads hanging out, sockets in bathroom hanging off wall, given dirty bath robes, room phone dead, place was dirty, no facilities other than the pool. Do t expect to wade through areas under construction in my swimming costume.
