- Breakfast was wonderful and in a beautiful dining room and with spectacular views of Pico! Staff was very friendly and accommodating . There were always staples on the table such as bread, cheese, crepes, jams. Then they would always ask if we wanted eggs as well.
Cons -
- The only negative thing I would say is the bed was too hard. Other than that, a perfect stay! So charming.
- Nothing! Everything was perfect!?we enjoyed all of the aspects of our stay!
- The beds were so firm/flat that it was very uncomfortable for a few people in our group. A quilted mattress cover is an inexpensive way to fix this issue, which would have made all difference in comfort on the beds I think. The bathrooms are big but the tub/shower has the plumping underneath, making it a bit scary for anyone not steady on their feet to get in and out due to the difference in height. A grab bar or step would help lessen the risk of a fall. There also needs to be better water containment (ie., secure half shower door to keep the water from pooling out onto the tile floors or shower curtains with weights on the bottom to keep the water from spilling out. Additionally rubber matted bathmats to step onto, would prevent slipping accidents, along with the afore mentioned step.Oh yea - there is a Rooster who doesn't know his day from night - so he's cockadoodling at all hours. LOL! But that only bothered my husband.

This hotel is tucked away up on the mountain above the town of Velas but it's really only a quick 5-minute drive from downtown, making this a quaint hidden gem. The hotel has an active restaurant so they include breakfast for their guests. Fresh crepes, eggs, cheese and fruit along with bread and homemade jellies. Have you ever had Pumpkin Jelly? The orange juice is fresh squeezed (so sometimes sweet and sometimes not) and fresh coffee made to order. It's the same breakfast every morning but it's consistently good. There is ceral and yogurt as well if you want something lighter. The hotel produces lots of it's own fruits and other produce for cooking and canning which is such a nice farm to table feel. They serve lunch and dinner with reservations because they are open to the public as well for those times. We had three separate cabins so we could spread out and have privacy, but we were still close so we could visit with each other. Each cabin had a separate bedroom and living room space making it feel really spacious. There was also small refrigerator in our room for a small snacks and beverages and a pot to boil water for instant coffee or tea and a coffee maker in one of our units too.The staff were very helpful and accomodating. The view and peaceful surroundings were really amazing as well. Great views of Pico when the clouds weren't covering it up. The pool was VERY cold but we loved it with it's lava rock waterfall! There is also a family of kitty's who were loving and affectionante as well. We took advantage of the laundry service they also provided which allowed us to keep our clothes fresh for our two week trip.

We loved the comfort, the silence, the view, the staff (very helpful, run by a family), and the restaurant had the best food of the island.
A little leak in the bathroom, nothing much
The size of the rooms.
Beds are like bricks. No screens on the windows so mosquitoes and lizards get in the rooms.
Our cottage was spacious, the staff was warm and welcoming, the property was verdant and bursting with wildflowers. We had fog the whole three days we were there but I imagine the view would be spectacular in clearer weather. We also really enjoyed having the restaurant on the property with great salads and dishes every night after long days of hiking. Breakfast was a treat too!
It might have been user error on our part but our shower door leaked a lot and due to the damp weather, the bathroom stayed wet throughout our stay
It has stunning views, great breakfast with local products and a really nice restaurant. The personnel is very kind and helpful. During my stay the weather was quite cold, therefore I found 2(!) electrical heating stoves in my room which helped to get a cosy atmosphere.
A few of the electrical sockets were dangerously loose (unsafe), the bathtub did not hold the water (it spread all over the floor while showering) and the WLAN was very poor. Additionally the windows were easiest to open from outside (importamt if you have a need for safety eg. solo travelling women)..
We had plenty of room and the staff were outstanding! The breakfast was fantastic and I highly recommend the pumpkin jam! We ate dinner at their restaurant twice and everything was wonderful.
It was not a "room", but a two-room apartment. Daily cleaning of rooms. The manager/host was very helpful and friendly. The on site restaurant was excellent. Our outside seating area had an excellent view of the adjoining islands.
The water in the shower was without pressure.Did not affect us at the time we traveled, but there was no air conditioner for a summer traveler.
The breakfast was amazing. They served eggs, cheese, fruit, yogurt, bread, crepes and cereal.
Lovely people. Great location. Highly recommend to book a table at their restaurant - best dinner in São Jorge!
Bed was a bit small.
Beautiful property! Enjoyed the pool and were luckily for Mt Pico to peak out of the clouds a few times during our stay. The restuarant at the property is also very tasty and nice! Breakfast is included and we ate dinner there both nights during our stay.
The hotel is located not far from Velas, 10 min from the airport. The hotel is built from authentic materials ( wood). Very unique design . The room has all facilities, a lot of space , and high ceiling in the living room. The view from the hotel is amazing. Opposite the Pico mountain, you have the best view from this point! The swimming pool is a great advantage. These is a garden around and you can taste amazing jams that the owner , Leticia, is cooking herself? . The staff is extremely friendly! The rest aren’t has the guest recommendations for few years in the row from the experts. You better book the table in advance!
The room has 2 floors, the bed is located on the second floor , you need to use the staircase. The walls are thin, so you could hear your neighbors, especially at night.
breakfast, restaurant, swimming pool
We had the most amazing stay at Hotel dos Moinhos. Loved everything about the property, the pool, the view to Pico. Breakfast was delicious, filled with local treats and delicious homemade jams with fruits they grow at the property. The restaurant was the best we found in Sao Jorge which was very convenient. Also Leticia was an amazing host and looked very well after us. I would definitely stay here again.
Everything was perfect.
The hotel is outside downtown Velas in a gorgeous location. Although anything can be walked I wouldn’t recommend walking there since it is up a steep, long incline. The hotel is a collection of holiday cottages with hotel service (beds made, rooms.cleaned,…). The hotel has an excellent restaurant with a gorgeous view of Pico island and its volcano. The cottages are simple but clean. They don’t have airco so you’ll have to go with the seasonal flow of temperature and humidity. The hotel does provide mosquito repellant so you can, open the windows for ventilation. The breakfast is served at the table which is a pleasant change from buffet style. The owners are very hospitable and kind.
A ventilator in rhea room would have made a difference
Stunning views, very friendly people, lovely comfortable spacious accommodation & reasonably priced. (Only improvement would have been air con in the bedroom!). Handy restaurant so we could have wine from Pico! We loved staying here!
Of all the islands I visited Sao Jorge is the most rugged. Man has forged a living among the steep hills and the cliffs descending into the ocean. Here also the hotel has carved a space with wide views and with a garden that gradually gives way to nature. The rooms are self contained cottages made of rough volcanic stone, partly covered by moss. It is not a place for the disabled unfortunately, there are uneven stone paths and steep climbs. But the people are very nice and the food is superb.
The bed is a bit smallish.
The view. The breakfast. The staff.
