Pros +
- Lovely location great staff and the restaurant was superb
- The smell of lilacs by the pool was incredible! Our suite was so charming and a perfect place to relax.
- Very nice B&B situated in quiet Chateau-Arnoux Saint-Auban. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable, the pool is wide and deep enough for a good swim. The staff is attentive. The restaurant is a Michelin one star so not your average $30 - $60 menu, but I really enjoyed the cuisine.
Cons -
- Air con didn’t exist we were lucky we had a window that opened and the staff gave us a fan. The thermostat was regulated by the hotel and set at 22 celcius so too warm for us Canadians ??
- If you are looking for lots of surrounding activities in village this is not your place. It is an incredible escape retreat to stay.
- There were two very minor things in our room- towel warmer did not work and shower head was hard to aim so it did not flood the floor. Minor paint touch ups needed in the bathroom. In Cafe Gaby - upgrade the wine glasses ( small and not great quality) - did not match the quality of wine offered on the wine list plus provide a toaster for guests to use at breakfast, so staff member does not have to go back to the kitchen to toast bread.

We arrived at La Bonne Etape after a long car ride - were feeling tired . This hotel had been selected as our " splurge " hotel as it had a Michelin star restaurant and was a Chateau and Relais hotel. When we arrived we were greeted outside the front doors by our wonderful host Stephanie. She was most welcoming - got us settled and made us a reservation for dinner at Cafe Gabby. It was so nice not to have to go out to find a restaurant - ate at Gabby twice. Our Michelin star meal was for our last night. Our room was spacious and had a lovely view of the pool , mountains and gardens.A carafe of water, biscuits and a lovely welcoming note were left in our room - a such a nice touch. Stephanie suggested what to do in the area and as well as walking trails close by.The public spaces were beautiful - filled with elegant furnishings and paintings. Our final dinner at Bonne Etape was beyond expectation - had wine pairings with the courses - amazing service, beautiful presentation on lovely serving dishes - very polished service. The Master Chef came around after the meal to see if we enjoyed our meal- an unexpected but very special surprise. Tuck in service in our room was appreciated each night with a special herbal tea and " jelly" candy! Tourist Brochure in the room was very handy. Huge fan of L'Occtaine - which was the toiletry product used.

The room, the surrounding, beautiful vineyard and pool area. Free parking onsite.
The hotel staff were excellent and the welcome up to the best Relais et Chateau standard.
An important part of our stay was the meal. Whilst the cuisine was fine the service levels in the restaurant were very poor
My husband and I can’t say enough wonderful things about La Bonne Etape. It is a truly special and magnificent place! Our trip got off to a rocky start when we encountered bad thunderstorms on our drive to the town. As a result, we were going to arrive very late at night and were concerned that we wouldn’t be able to check in. We were also hungry (!) and so messaged the hotel and asked if they could leave a little snack in the room for us. And to our pleasant surprise, notonly did a lovely staff member named Lucille come out to greet our car when we arrived very late, but the chef had made some incredible sandwiches for both my husband and I! It was such a nice touch and so appreciated after such a long drive. As for the hotel itself- what can we say? Simply perfection. Stunning rooms with beautiful views. Perfect location to explore the surrounding towns. A convenient car park located directly across the street from the hotel. The pool is clean and gorgeous. A staff member walks around and asks you if you want any drinks. They are so accommodating and try to give you whatever you need. I also highly recommend taking a walk thru the magnificent gardens of the hotel which is right near the pool. They are simply beautiful. And the restaurants - wow!!!! My husband and I eat at Michelin restaurants all the time and Chef Jany Gleize and his daughter, Jane, and staff are masters at what they do. They have definitely earned their Michelin star but we think they deserve another! Their attention to detail is incredible and their creativity is something to see. My husband and I ate at the Michelin restaurant on 2 different nights because we loved it so much. We must have mentioned that it was our wedding anniversary, because the restaurant surprised us with a special cake for dessert. What a treat! Thank you to all of the staff of that amazing restaurant for everything they did to make our visit special.
Nothing! It’s paradise :)
Friendly staff Restaurant food delicious though service aloof
Propery was very run down, we were surprised it’s a relais châteaux listing. It’s a strange, out of the way hotel that is overpriced. The area is not a destination stay.
The staff and the flexibility to accommodate our needs
The surroundings of the hotel that are not inviting to discover by walk.
The pool is nice. They allowed us to feed our baby in the room with a high chair. We left some items and they are posting them to us.
The breakfast was way overpriced for what we received. We also were led to believe that it was included. When I questioned this, I was told I shouldn't have been told this, but nothing was done about it. I was told that's the way it is. 24 euros for a small buffet and one cooked egg. The hotel is also tired, and we requested a room near the restaurant which we were promised but weren't delivered. I found mouse droppings in the room. This is a really overpriced hotel for what you receive, they are using the fact they have a Michelin starred restaurant to hike up the price. When we left, there was no one to be seen on reception so I couldn't communicate the above. This was a minimoon for us after our wedding in France, and it was not very good at all.
Great location in Alps de Provence. The hotel and restaurant are delicious. The breakfast is great.
The wifi in the property wasn't the fastest.
Excellent gastronomic restaurant and helpful staff.
Not enough staff at breakfast time so long wait for drinks and replenishing buffet.
