Pros +
- The views, the design, the staff and the wine selection was great!
- The restaurant was pretty good with a nice complimentary breakfast. Staff was friendly. Drive through the Cro Valley was beautiful.
- Fabulous helpful and friendly staff who could not do enough for us. Good reasonably priced restaurant. Comfortable beds. Included use of indoor pool.
Cons -
- Could not adjust the temp of the rooms, rather it's controlled at the front desk. We didn't realize we could open the window so the room was stuffy. Set off the fire alarm with a shower. Had to ask front desk staff twice to adjust room temp as the first time it was not adjusted. no fans available for air movement. Hotel is pretty dark and basic (saving on electricity?). We were expecting natural hot springs with the "thermal pools" but ended up being a tepid chlorinated pool.
- Modern design stylish but frosted glass en-suite offered little privacy and rooms had no views or balconies to make use of the rural setting. We missed having an outdoor lounging area or outdoor pool
- The restaurant could be more accommodating for a vegan diet as there were very little options available for us. We would have liked an area to relax in the sun.

The room was adequate and the staff were very welcoming and easy to talk with. Good location from local towns if you have a car. Plenty of space for parking.

The design of the hotel, the quietness of the location, the bedroom layout and the sunken pool.
To know only at arrival that we would have access to the SPA pool for only 1 hour free of charge. The information available at the hotel site and on the booking platform didn't mention that. The hotel photos showed the SPA pool were misleading as it do not belongs to the hotel as we were told at check-in.
Loved the location far from everything and how confy the bed was. Also great breakfast.
I was expecting thermal waters but it was just a spa with hot waters. The chlorine at the pool was so high that my noose didn´t like it when I accidentally swallowed a little bit of water.
Good breakfast. Nice water pool.
Everything was way too dark. Passages from lift to room had even walls and ceiling painted black. Toilet in the room can only be described as a black hole, where even the light switch waa painted black and was very difficult to find at first. Room was also very stuffy, having no openable window. Bath was a raw concrete hole in the floor and was extremely uncomfortable to lie in. Wooden ceiling tile was water damaged and coming loose.
The silence and the peace! The restaurant was amazing, and even the bar. Very cosy place! We experienced the pool and a massage and cannot be happier;)
Nice modern hotel in a quiet place surrounded by hills.
Good bed. Comfortable. Breakfast with plenty of options, fresh fruit. Diner also nice. Good cook!
Bathroom / toilet could be more practical and private. The hotel and the rooms don’t have very good and cozy lighting.
Very friendly staff and a great restaurant with some lovely dishes. Remembered me from an earlier booking too. Access to the pool in the Termas is a bonus.
Still the issue with the bathroom, floor getting soaking wet when using the shower!
Nice setting. The bedroom was modern, with a sunken bath and smoke glass screens, separating the loo and bath area, in privacy terms a bit risqué! The bedroom was warm and quiet, and a comfy bed, good wardrobe space. All the staff we met were brilliant! The restaurant was modern, perhaps a bit pared back for us, but the food was excellent, I particularly liked the Dourada with the lemon risotto. The use of the Termas de Cro Spa swimming pool, for an hour a day for free was a bonus and access to Spa treatments at a extra cost was also something we took advantage of.
For us there was a couple of things that with a bit of thought could be improved. Firstly the shower is over the sunken bath, but when in use the water collects around the sides so floods the floor with water! So the bathroom part is permanently wet, unless you use a couple of towels to mop it up. Secondly, the small bar area is perhaps a let down, quite uninviting to want to sit in, it’s also a pass through to the spa so it feels like a bit of an after thought, didn’t encourage us to use it.
Great location for a remarkable getaway, at least this was my expectation. Great restaurant experience if the cook is there.
Unfortunately Thermal treatment was almost impossible to book, except for one hour in the pool each day no other treatment was available during our stay. To many people from outside the hotel come for Thermal treatment everyday and that makes it impossible for hotel guests to book any treatment. The hotel should reserve some dedicated treatments for hotel guests.Regarding the restaurant, the food quality changes overnight from excellent to bad, when the regular cook is not present. The hotel should consider a comfortable lounge for guests, it is poorly equipped and the chairs are really not comfortable.Outside there are no benches to sit on and no garbage bins from the entrance until the hotel. People could really enjoy a relaxing bench and clean the garbage alongside the sidewalk.
Overall I'd say that everything was just as we expected. You should understand that all the benefits come with trade-offs. For example, you might enjoy the modern design and the looks of the hotel but at the same time putting the design in front of practicality leads to certain issues. Such as: the scratches on the ribbed vinyl walls are not getting fixed, the black paint on the white sockets is peeling off (they couldn't find black plastic obviously and had to paint over the white plastic with black paint for the sake of keeping everything in the same color scheme), the plasterboards covered by microcement in the shower rooms have wear and tear, some handles from custom giant windows are broken and not being replaced and so on.Same for location: it's in the middle of nowhere with fantastic nature views but once you want to have a touch of services (like supermarkets or restaurants), well, you are stuck. The nearest city is Guarda. The small town of Sabugal has only one pizzaria, which works until 11:00 pm.However, I'll admit that contrary to some reviews from the past, several things have improved. First of all, 1 hour of swimming pool per day per person is included in the stay fee. We didn't have to pay for our daily attendances at all. Next, the breakfast is rather good. You get eggs and bacon as a hot meal and there's quite a choice of snacks and "entradas".Finally, no issues with the staff at all. Friendly and attentive just in the right measure.Overall, I'm happy with our choice.
As mentioned, the priority was given to the looks and not functionality. So you get a cubic toilet room with frosted glass and very little sound isolation. Looks good on photo, very unpractical in reality. The wear and tear of the both interior and exterior parts, which are not easily replaceable, are also starting to get apparent. I think in 3-5 years without an expensive overhaul the hotel is gonna look patchy exactly because some of the well looking design solutions are not durable enough and are hard to be replaced due to their bespoke nature. The only objective downside I'd like to mention is the restaurant, to which you need to go if you don't want to have pizza in Sabugal or drive to Guarda for a proper restaurant. The prices in the hotel restaurant are x1.5 of what you might expect in average Portuguese restaurant. And the portions are x1.5 smaller. You will still be hungry after the order. So, basically, it's around 100 EUR for the family dinner if you really want to make the hunger go away. I think it's truly a shame. Guys, make your portions bigger. I care less if it increases the bill but at least the client will feel fed after making and waiting for the order.
We liked the big window and the size of the room. Also the location is amazing, right by Serra da Estrela and you can do some trails and walks depending on your fitness level. The included SPA is an AMAZING feature.
It was a twin room but the beds were together, which being mother and daughter it's fine but it might be strange in other occasions. Also the tub is amazing but hard to walk in out of, if you are of a certain age. And the fact that you can hear and see people in the bathroom is no for me.
The staff was very friendly and nice.
The room was a bit to closed. No windows to open or balcony to enjoy the wonderful nature outside!Room architecture was nice to watch, but not functional with poor privacy in WC.
Architecture. Friendliness. Thermal pool.Good food and restaurant service - thank you Silvia and Paulo - we felt really welcomed at dinner
- No access to the varandas- Be aware of less fit costumers with the access to the bath stepping down from the floor. Nevertheless, none of us had a problem going down and we loved its design, but remember being adjacent to the therms will bring people with less mobility that will have problems getting to the shower/bath.
Staff, food, bed
Modern building but with a lot of practical details missed.
Breakfast was good selection. This hotel was right on our bike route so a great overnight stop which included a trip to the Cro Termal Spa. Dinner and wine at the restaurant was excellent. Staff were kind enough to offer us a secure place to store our bikes overnight.
The location and grounds are amazing. The hotel design is interesting. The pool at the Thermal Spa (1h/night access included in the stay) is very good and of an interesting design as well.
The noise in the room: everyday between 22h and 23h30, and then starting at 8h or earlier, there would be fairly loud noises and vibration from people dragging chairs and tables in the restaurant below - it sounded like the upstairs neighbors were remodeling the room, over and over... Also, everytime someone nearby flushed a toilet, took a bath or used the sink, we would hear water flowing in the pipes - it could even be heard outside the hotel! Very bad soundproofing - though to be fair we couldn't hear any voices or people noise. Also, the A/C in the room didn't work properly and the room was always cold; the reception could not fix this. The staff was friendly and somewhat attentive, but a bit inefficient. Finally, though 1h/night of Spa main pool access was nice and usually enough, it would have been better to have 1h/day; each access has to be booked in advance, though we did not have any issues with this in the end.
