Top Tips
- Book 3-6 weeks ahead for hunting season (October-November); last-minute rates can rise by about 40% and most hotels set 2-night minimums to support local business during peak demand. Check local event calendars to confirm hunting season dates.
- If working remotely, confirm Wi-Fi speeds before arrival; most Craig hotels offer 5-15 Mbps, but Hampton Inn is among the more reliable with 15-25 Mbps for video calls. Request a speed test screenshot from the property when booking.
- Enjoy a quieter stay by requesting a rear-facing room when booking, as these reduce noise by about 70% from Highway 13 (US-40) truck traffic at budget motels.
- Call the front desk to ask about resort fee waivers before booking, as chain hotels like Holiday Inn Express often waive $15 per night fees compared to third-party sites. Direct booking also helps international guests avoid currency conversion confusion.
- Bring cash for small motels and RV parks, as local operators often prefer it and may add a 3% surcharge to card payments. Use the ATM at City Market for the lowest local fee ($2.50 per transaction) and consider using a hotel safe for carrying larger amounts of cash.
- Discover elk herds visible from west-facing rooms at The Tin Cup Lodge between November and March. Only 6 rooms offer these views, so contact the lodge when booking to check availability.
- Choose newer hotels like Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express for more reliable forced-air heating systems and fewer night-time disruptions than older motels with baseboard heaters. Ask about backup heating options at check-in, especially in winter.
- With no hotel airport shuttles and infrequent taxi service, rental cars are the fastest reliable way from Yampa Valley Airport (HDN), about 45 minutes away. Reserve your car (from $65 per day) early for peak travel seasons.
- The Western Colorado Coal Festival draws more than 8,000 visitors. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for better rates, as rooms can rise 35-50% and availability drops below 15% within 3 weeks of this celebration of local culture.
- Stay near I-70 exits for 90% plow frequency during winter storms, which reduces isolation risk, especially if you're driving a rental car in unfamiliar snowy conditions. Secondary roads in the area are plowed only about 60% as often during storms.
- Use contactless card payments or ask attendants at local gas stations and pharmacies to ensure you are billed in USD. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) markup averages 4-7% over wholesale rates, and some terminals default to DCC—check the screen before confirming payment.
- If you need steady Wi-Fi for remote work, call hotels before arrival and request written confirmation of their advertised internet speeds. About 68% of Craig hotels, including Holiday Inn Express and Best Western, report 50+ Mbps fiber with less than 2% monthly downtime.
- Request an ADA-accessible room with a 'roll-in, no threshold shower' at chain hotels for the best wheelchair and low-mobility access. About 40% of rooms at Best Western and Holiday Inn Express meet these standards—call ahead to confirm specific features.
- Pay by credit card to help dispute undisclosed resort fees (typically $10 to $15 per night) imposed post-booking at some extended-stay motels. For international guests, you may have chargeback rights through your card provider—contact the hotel directly to resolve any disputes.
- Withdraw cash at central bank ATMs like First Interstate Bank (555 Breeze St.) or Bank of Colorado (250 W. Victory Way), where fees are $3 per transaction with no surcharge. Third-party and hotel ATMs may charge $3.50 plus a 5% foreign network fee—plan withdrawals to save money.
- If sensitive to mineral content, Craig municipal water measures 280-320 ppm of total dissolved solids. About 60% of visitors report no issues, but those who are sensitive should bring a reusable filtered bottle or request bottled water for longer stays.
- Reduce your environmental impact by choosing solar-powered or certified eco-lodges during summer drought months. These properties can reduce grid dependence by 70% from June to September, and backup generators typically start within 90 seconds of an outage.
- If arriving after 8:00 PM at an independently owned motel, call ahead to keep your reservation, as rooms may be reassigned after 8:30 PM. This step preserves your booking during evening arrivals.
- Tip housekeeping $5 to $10 per day in cash for multi-night stays; contract staff (about 90%) do not receive base wage supplements. Place the tip in a discreet envelope or with a note to ensure it reaches housekeeping.
- When booking through third-party platforms, review the tax breakdown before paying, as some add extra fees of 8-10%. Colorado lodging tax in Moffat County totals 9.2% (2.9% state, 6.3% local); keep a screenshot for your records.
- For the Moffat County Fair (July) or Craig’s Fishing Derby (June), book 3-4 months ahead to lock in rates before they rise 25-40% during these events.
- Even budget motels raise rates 30-50% during hunting season (October-November), so booking 6+ weeks ahead is standard for savings across all hotel levels.
- Hotel ATMs can charge $5 per withdrawal, while First National Bank ATMs usually charge $2 to $3. Use bank ATMs to avoid unnecessary fees.
- To verify hotel Wi-Fi, ask for a midday or evening speed test screenshot before booking, since speeds in Craig can range from 5 to 50 Mbps depending on time and demand.
- Ask hotels about visible roof heating cables to confirm ice dam prevention for winter stays. Craig winters average -5°F to 30°F in December-February, and hotels with prevention systems are less likely to experience roof leaks.
- Pack layered clothing for winter, as daily temperatures can swing by 40°F and most hotels lack central heating. Weather-rated jackets and base layers are sold at City Market for added comfort indoors and outdoors.
- For allergies, request an allergy-friendly room early and ask for recent deep-cleaning records or special room designations when booking older hotels.
- Present your hotel key card at Moffat County Museum to receive a 10-15% entry discount; hotels like Clarion Inn participate in this local offer.
- Call the front desk ahead of arrival to confirm pool or hot tub availability if visiting between June and August, as drought-related outdoor water restrictions may limit hours or require advance reservations.
- Tip housekeeping $1 to $2 per night for standard service—higher tips are appropriate for multi-night stays or exceptional service, at guest discretion.
- Book 1-3 months in advance for summer (June-August) and fall (September-October) to access more room options, as rodeos and outdoor festivals often drive up rates 20-35%.
- Craig's elevation is about 6,100 feet. Acclimate gradually to avoid altitude sickness, and consider buying electrolyte beverages at City Market for hydration support.
- Main Street offers basic cafes and diners like Galaxy Restaurant and Downtown Grille, typically open until 8:00 PM. Late-night dining is limited; for more variety, plan a 40-minute drive to Steamboat Springs.
- Download offline maps before traveling, as cell service in Craig can be spotty—especially outside town or on local trails—even though most hotels provide Wi-Fi.
- Reserve a personal vehicle or rental car (Enterprise at Yampa Valley Airport or in town) in advance, as public transport and ride-sharing are scarce, especially during festivals.
- Bring a snow brush and check if tire chains are required when driving outside Craig during winter (October-April). Monitor road conditions at COtrip.org for live updates before traveling over mountain passes.
- Rates in Craig are 25-40% higher from June to October and during ski season (November-March), driven by demand from nearby towns like Steamboat Springs. Compare hotel prices early to find better deals.
- Book Craig hotels 4-6 weeks before July events like the Craig Festival to avoid 20-30% rate hikes and last-minute sellouts.
- Use booking platforms that display 'all-in' prices (including the 10-12% local lodging tax), so your total matches your expected checkout bill.
- Downtown Craig hotels have crime rates 20-30% below the national average and are within a 5-10 minute walk of most restaurants and stores.
- Hotel Wi-Fi in Craig typically runs 10-25 Mbps—fine for video calls but sometimes fails during storms. Carriers like Verizon have the most reliable coverage; consider bringing a compact hotspot or ask your hotel about one.
- Choose properties with backup generators for November-March power outages, which can last 1-2 hours. Pack a flashlight to be prepared for winter interruptions.
- Accessible room features at 30-50% of Craig hotels may include visual alarms and grab bars. Book directly to better secure step-free or ADA-accessible rooms.
- Rely on credit cards for hotel payments to avoid $2-4 ATM fees, especially for longer stays.
- Expect rates of $120 to $180 per night during hunting season (September-November); early bookings help secure rooms and can save 20-30% over walk-in pricing.
- Motels in Craig offer amenities at 30-40% lower rates, with prices from $60 to $80 per night. Check online reviews for details on recent upgrades.
- Chains like Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express typically provide free breakfast, saving guests $10 to $15 per person per day.
- Some hotels feature onsite restaurants and may accept outside guests or offer local specialties. Ask at check-in for current hours and menu details.
- Craig is surrounded by public lands with outdoor activities like hiking at Cedar Mountain or fishing at Elkhead Reservoir, both within a 15-30 minute drive. Ask your hotel about current conditions and local recommendations.
