Top Tips
- Book summer accommodations 6-8 weeks in advance, especially if you need connecting or accessible rooms, as small properties with fewer than 20 rooms on the Homer Spit and near charters often fill by July. If booking a national chain, check for loyalty member discounts or accessible-room guarantees.
- For direct charter access and fresh seafood, choose lodging on the Homer Spit. If you need grocery stores, full-service hotels, or on-site laundry, downtown Homer is 4 to 5 miles (10 to 15 minutes) away by car. Ask if your hotel provides shuttle service between the Spit and downtown.
- Book a room on the Homer Spit to avoid a 10 to 15 minute pre-dawn drive for sunrise charters, which usually board before 6:00 AM. Check if your hotel offers early breakfast or packed meal options if you have a morning tour.
- Check your hotel’s fish-handling policy before booking, as most properties prohibit cleaning fish in rooms. Public cleaning stations are available on the Spit, and some hotels offer freezer storage or help guests connect with local packing and shipping services.
- From May to July, expect biting insects. Bring DEET or icaridin repellent and a light headnet for shoreline visits at dawn or dusk. Confirm that your room has window screens or AC, and consider packing lightweight long sleeves for outdoor activity and using indoor drying to minimize insect entry.
- Wi-Fi speeds in Homer vary, as many inns use DSL or satellite. Ask the hotel for a recent speed test result if you need to work remotely; guests at major chains should also ask about business center access or workspaces.
- Hotels and lodges in Homer are usually one or two stories with no elevators. Request a ground-floor or accessible room if needed. Major chains may offer ADA-compliant rooms or step-free access; confirm availability when booking.
- Grocery stores and laundromats are located downtown, a 10 to 15 minute drive from the Spit. Plan your supply run before heading out; some hotels offer a shuttle, on-site mini-mart, or guest laundry—ask at check-in.
- Bring quick-dry layers and moisture-resistant footwear to handle the Spit's wind and salt spray. Ask if your hotel has an indoor drying room or gear racks, as larger hotels may offer dedicated facilities for clothing and equipment.
- Public transit and taxis are limited in Homer. Reserve a rental car or arrange a lodge shuttle in advance, especially during fishing season. Some hotels partner with local car hires or operate pre-booked shuttles; confirm available transport options when reserving your room.
