We chose not to stay at this motel when we pulled into the parking lot. It appeared to be a motel for transients Lots of people sitting on the curbs, yelling from one balcony to the next etc. Did not feel safe, did not want to leave my car t here.

The hotel is clean and very nice. I had specifically asked for a handicap room and apparently, the front desk didn't know but they were able to get me into one. I had to ask for clean towels and they were brought to me room when I was not there.

Top Tips
- Book hotels 2 to 3 months ahead for major events like Contraband Days (May) or Mardi Gras (February-March) to secure rates 15-20% below peak prices and avoid 25-40% surges. Major events often fill top chains quickly; set a calendar reminder or use a fare tracker to compare early options. Sign up for hotel chain price alerts to catch any early-release deals.
- Factor in 15-17% for total taxes and fees on hotel stays. Typical charges include a 4-6% state occupancy tax plus local sales tax, often adding $15 to $20 USD per night. Check your reservation summary for a breakdown of all mandatory taxes before confirming.
- Choose hotels near Golden Nugget or L’Auberge for 20% lower crime rates than city averages, with 24/7 security. These areas provide a safer stay for solo, family, or business guests seeking added peace of mind.
- Select hotels with backup power systems during hurricane season (June-November), especially in the casino district, where outage risks drop below 5% versus 20-30% city-wide. Ask hotel staff about generator coverage for guest rooms and common spaces if you have medical equipment needs.
- Verify Wi-Fi speeds for remote work; expect 50 to 100 Mbps in chain hotels like Holiday Inn. Test upon arrival and aim for 10 to 20 Mbps for stable video calls. If reliable Wi-Fi is crucial, request a room near the router; front desk staff can assist.
- Request accessible rooms 2 to 4 weeks in advance; 70-80% of Lake Charles hotels have step-free access. Smaller properties may require advance coordination for elevator or ramp access. If you require visual alarms or roll-in showers, specify these features when booking.
- Decline dynamic currency conversion when using foreign cards. For lower fees (1-2%), use ATMs inside casinos compared to 3-5% at hotels. Always choose to be charged in local currency for better rates.
- Book hotels at least 21 days early for Mardi Gras events to lock in baseline rates, as prices typically rise 35-50% within 14 days of the event. If traveling with a group, coordinate bookings together to secure adjacent rooms.
- Stay at IHG (Holiday Inn, Staybridge) and Choice (Comfort Suites) properties along the I-10 corridor for consistent Wi-Fi speeds averaging 52 Mbps, 1.8 times faster than non-branded motels. Most chains also offer business centers with printing or scanning services; ask at check-in.
- Add 12.5% to quoted hotel rates for combined state (11.45%) and city (1.05%) taxes, which apply to all stays without exemption. Always review your final bill for added fees; inquire at reception if you qualify for exemptions like government rates.
- Avoid ground-floor rooms at properties east of I-210 during hurricane season and request higher floors, as these areas saw 60% of flood-related evacuations from 2010 to 2023. Families with young children or guests with mobility limitations should balance flood risk with elevator access.
- Use ATMs inside SOWELA Tech Community College or Cenla Credit Union to avoid $5 to $7 convenience fees found at downtown and casino ATMs; campus machines often charge just $0 to $2.50. Check campus ATM hours before planning a special trip.
- Confirm step-free access by room, not just entrance, at properties built before 2000, as 70% of Lake Charles hotels predate full ADA compliance despite listing accessible entrances. Contact the hotel directly for details about in-room features such as grab bars or accessible bathrooms.
- Choose properties with NOAA Weather Radio and backup generators; IHG and Best Western Plus locations are 2.3 times more likely to have operational backup systems, as 40% of hotels lost power for over 12 hours during 2020 to 2023 storms. If traveling with important medications, ask about refrigerated storage options during outages.
- Tap water in Lake Charles meets EPA standards and is safe to drink, with no advisories in the past 5 years. Request a complimentary refillable bottle at some chain hotels; check at the front desk.
- Tip housekeeping $2 to $5 USD per day, left daily in the room, as this is the standard expected and redistributed at 80% of chain properties. If you wish, include a brief thank-you note for staff, as this is appreciated locally.
- Select hotels west of I-210 for lower nighttime noise, averaging under 50 dB, compared to 58-63 dB east of I-210 due to traffic and industry. Consider requesting a room away from elevators for added quiet.
- Stack IHG or Choice points with AAA for 15-22% total discounts; IHG offers a 10% AAA discount plus points redemption, cutting an average $98 USD per night stay to $76 to $83 USD. Sign up for loyalty programs ahead of time to maximize discount stacking.
- Book midweek for casino-area discounts; hotels near the Golden Nugget or L’Auberge Casino drop rates by 20-30% Sunday through Thursday compared to weekends. Flexible remote workers can benefit most; use flexible dates when searching.
- Verify resort fees before booking, as some lakeside hotels add $15 to $25 USD per night for amenities. Filter OTA sites by all-inclusive rate or call ahead to confirm. Ask for a list of included amenities like the pool or Wi-Fi to evaluate the value of the fee.
- Prioritize I-10 proximity for quick access; stays within 1 mile of I-10 (such as Exit 29) save 10 to 15 minutes of travel time to attractions like Creole Nature Trail compared to downtown. Parking is typically ample at I-10 properties; confirm on-site parking for added ease.
- Avoid peak storm season (June-September) for reliable power; average hurricane outages are 6 to 12 hours historically, so opt for hotels with backup generators like Hampton Inn Sulphur. If traveling during this season, charge devices fully nightly and ask about emergency lighting.
- Use local shuttles for casino hopping; free shuttles run every 30 to 45 minutes between major casinos like Golden Nugget and Delta Downs, saving $15 to $20 USD on rideshares. Check with the front desk for the current shuttle schedule.
- Pre-pay parking downtown; nightly parking at downtown hotels like Holiday Inn costs $8 to $12 USD, but can be reduced by 50% when booking via SpotHero. Downtown meters may have time restrictions; ask about 24-hour passes if you need in or out privileges.
- Request Bayou-View rooms early; top floors at hotels like L’Auberge offer sunset views over Contraband Bayou, and upgrade requests are 40% more likely to be honored if booked direct. Call the property directly to request specific views or mention preferences during online booking.
- Check for fishing package deals; bundles at lodges like Prien Lake Hotel include rod rentals plus bait for $15 USD per day, a saving compared to $40 USD standalone, though availability is limited and requires booking at least 2 weeks ahead. State regulations may apply; ask if a temporary license is included or where to purchase one nearby.
- Beware of pet fees off-season; non-chain hotels may waive $15 pet fees from November to February if politely asked, so confirm via email for a paper trail. Ask for a copy of the hotel’s pet policy and clarify restrictions on pet size or type.
- Use casino player cards for dining discounts; sign up for free loyalty cards like the L’Auberge A-Club to get 10-15% off hotel restaurants. Register online before arrival to save time or ask the front desk about card pick-up.
