Methodology: learn how we calculate these figures

The best day to fly and how far ahead to book shown in this table are built from the prices Priceline customers actually paid for flights to this destination over the past 12 months or more.

Where a route has too few bookings to fill a figure, we borrow the shape from a group of routes with similar price behavior and fit it to the fares booked on that route.

Because past fares don’t reflect today’s market, we then adjust the historical prices for current conditions such as inflation and fuel costs, using the round-trip fares found in recent searches.

The cheapest round-trip and one-way fares, the good-deal price and the best time of day to fly come directly from the fares found in recent searches, not from historical bookings.

Methodology: learn how we calculate these charts

The charts “When is the cheapest time to fly?”, “How far in advance should I book?”, “What's the cheapest day of the week to fly?” and “What do round-trip flights to China cost?” are built from the prices Priceline customers actually paid for flights on this route over the past 12 months or more.

Where a route has too few bookings to fill every point in a chart, we borrow the shape of the curve from a group of routes with similar price behavior and fit it to the fares booked on this route.

Because past fares don’t reflect today’s market, we then adjust the historical prices for current conditions such as inflation and fuel costs, using the round-trip fares found in recent searches on this route.

The chart “When is the best time of day to fly?” is calculated directly from the fares found in recent searches, not from historical bookings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about flying to China.

Which U.S. cities can I fly from to reach China?

Nonstop flights from the United States to China depart from seven cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Dallas, Detroit, and Washington. Los Angeles offers the most service with 37 weekly flights and the shortest typical flight time of 14h 25m to Beijing, while flights from Seattle to Shanghai take 12h 50m. Other notable nonstop routes include San Francisco to Shanghai at 13h 35m, New York to Beijing at 16h 45m, Dallas to Shanghai at 15h 25m, and Washington to Beijing at 16h 55m. Travellers typically choose a departure city based on proximity to home, available carriers, or flight frequency, and connecting itineraries through other hubs are also common for reaching Chinese cities without a nonstop from the nearest US airport.
Methodology
Departure cities and their weekly nonstop flights come from our flight-schedule database, which combines published airline timetables, U.S. government schedule data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), and observed flight operations from the EUROCONTROL/OpenSky Open Performance Data Initiative (OPDI). We list every city in the origin country with scheduled nonstop service to an airport in the destination, busiest first.

Which airports in China are the best to fly into?

Major entry points from the United States include Beijing Capital and Shanghai Pudong, which receive the most nonstop flights and offer extensive domestic connections. Guangzhou Baiyun and Hong Kong International are strong alternatives for southern China, with high-speed rail and domestic flights onward.

How long is the flight to China?

Nonstop flights from the United States to China range from about 12 hours 50 minutes to 16 hours 55 minutes, depending on the departure city. From Seattle, a nonstop flight typically takes 12 hours 50 minutes, while from San Francisco it is around 14 hours 5 minutes, and from Los Angeles it is 14 hours 25 minutes. New York flights run about 15 hours 50 minutes, and Washington flights are typically 16 hours 55 minutes. Most nonstop flights are overnight departures, though flights from Seattle, Dallas, and Detroit leave during the day.
Methodology
Flight times come from our flight-schedule database, which combines published airline timetables, U.S. government schedule data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), and observed flight operations from the EUROCONTROL/OpenSky Open Performance Data Initiative (OPDI); the typical time is the median scheduled duration of each departure city's nonstop services to the destination.

Methodology

Which airlines fly to China?

United, Delta, American, China Eastern, Air China, China Southern, Xiamen Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Hainan Airlines fly from the United States to China. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Dallas, Detroit, and Washington all have nonstop service.
Methodology
Airlines are the operating carriers scheduled on nonstop services from each departure city, taken from our flight-schedule database, which combines published airline timetables, U.S. government schedule data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), and observed flight operations from the EUROCONTROL/OpenSky Open Performance Data Initiative (OPDI).

When is the cheapest time to fly to China?

The cheapest months to fly from the United States to China are October, September, and January, with October about 8% below the yearly average, September about 7% below, and January about 6% below. The lowest half-month fares occur in late January, based on the Los Angeles to Shanghai and New York to Shanghai pairs. The priciest months are July and December, with July roughly 10% above the yearly average and December about 9% above.
Methodology
These seasonal fares look at the busiest city-to-city routes between the two places (up to four, chosen by scheduled flights) and at the seasonal fare curve Priceline's own archive provides for each route. Months are ranked by how far each month's average fare sits above or below that route's yearly average, taking the middle value across the routes, so one expensive route cannot dominate.

How far in advance should I book flights to China?

From Los Angeles and New York to Shanghai, fares are lowest about 4 weeks before departure, with the best booking window running from roughly 3.5 to 6.5 weeks out. Fares rise when booking very early, and they also rise again when booking very late.
Methodology
This booking-window guidance looks at the busiest city-to-city routes between the two places (up to four, chosen by scheduled flights) and at the booking-window fare curve Priceline's own archive provides for each route. The best time to book is the middle value of those routes' cheapest lead times.

How easy is it to travel within China after I arrive?

China has an extensive high-speed rail network linking major cities, plus frequent domestic flights. Arriving in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou gives the easiest onward connections by air or train to most regions.
