Located just 30 miles outside of Las Vegas, Hoover Dam is a modern-day miracle of engineering. Construction of the dam began in 1931 and was completed in 1935 ahead of its original schedule. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1985 and is visited by over 8 million people a year. The dam is used as a bridge over the Colorado River and is made up of a series of dangerous twists and turns as well as rock slides. Over 700 feet tall, the dam is taller than the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. It also generates enough electricity for a city of 750,000 people when running at full force.
