Hotel Guest Reviews of the Sands Motel

Our hotel ratings and reviews are from real hotel guests. ensures that its reviews are guests-only by proactively sending hotel surveys to customers after they've completed their hotel stays. In the post-stay surveys, hotel customers are asked a number of questions about their stay and the hotel. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best, the survey asks guests to rate their overall experience and specifically rate the hotel's cleanliness, staff and location. does not allow site visitors to post unsolicited hotel reviews.

It's a vintage 1950s era motel with a few updates, such as an in-room refrigerator, a microwave, and WiFi. The bed was comfortable, the room was clean, and the staff was very polite. The price cannot be beat!
If I had known that trains run all night long, and that Grants is basically a truck stop now, I might have selected a different place to stay (i.e., not Grants). However, given that it is very convenient to the Malpais, it was still fine.

The hotel is pet-friendly and within walking distance of a good Mexican restaurant, which, however, closes very early. There are plenty of decent dining options, but for later-evening non-fast-food service, you have to go a few miles to Milan.

This is a small motel that is on Route 66. The owners are extremely nice, and they offer coffee in the morning which a lot of small motels do not anymore. The room was very clean, the shower had a lot of pressure. The TV is a flat screen
Nothing, they had ice, the beds were comfortable. It is just older that is all, but that is it's charm

Nothing - maybe the woman at the counter. She was nice enough.
Facility was ancient - and had no renovations. Sketchy part of town and a bit scary. The Internet was nonexistent and the 'help' was useless. Of course it worked in the office. The router didn't even show up as a choice most of the time.

Ye olde fashioned.
Needs new pillows and carpets.

Pro: Retro and very Rt. 66. Con: Retro and very Rt. 66. Needs updated but with the flavor of the era. Then it would be really nice. But that would probably up the price too. Adequate facility for the money.

Location was ideal for a weary traveler traveling coast to coast.
Although courteous, the front desk staff is totally unprofessional and not equipped to efficiently run a hotel. The staff would not patch through phone calls, not understanding English well enough to realize guests WERE BEING ASKED FOR by name and they o

Not professionally run.An improbability to get incoming calls through use of the guest's name.No reliability as to their promises of service. No reliability as to their attentiveness of service. No reliability as to their front desk attendance, especially at peak hours of check-out time.Since this is a hotel where their clientele are almost completely travelers, I would strongly suggest a different hotel in Grants, Gallup, or Albuquerque. more

Free ice.
Loud air conditioner.

This place is friendly, but very dated and worn. My non-smoking room had cigarette burns in the carpet. The dead bolt on the door did not work. There was no clock in the room. There are soft spots in the floor. The air conditioner was loud and kept me awake all night. The owner is afraid of people stealing his free Internet, so has a 20 character password which does not work on many computers. Which is kind of strange with a McDonald's up the street with their wide open WiFi. If you like the little amenities (that actually work) in a motel, this is not for you. more
