Family Traveling with Teens
I have only praise for the Lamp Hotel and its staff. As a frequent traveler, I can "talk hotel." If you're looking for: (1) absolutely authentic lodging; (2) in a great location; (3) with the necessary amenities to stay "21st-century connected;" and (4) with a great staff, you've found it in this hotel. Certainly it met the vacation objectives for my 15-year-old son's and my stay in the city. 1. The Facility. The hotel provides a boutique experience: a handful of rooms in a multi-story building in Sultanahmet (the Old City). Our 2nd-floor room provided two European-style twin beds, with 3 (or possibly more) electric outlets.(Note: you can ask for a "Blue Mosque" room view, but you're so close to the mosque that I wouldn't sweat the room's view.) The complimentary breakfast consisting of cereal, various cheeses, light pastry, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, bread, and coffee/tea/juice. I ate there daily. 2. The Location. The hotel literally sits a couple of blocks beside the Blue Mosque. (It's less than a 5-minutes brisk walk.) If you want to be within walking distance of the Blue Mosque, the Haghia Sophia, Topaki Palace, the Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar, the tram to Galata Tower and to Dolmabançe Palace, then Sultanahmet is your choice. We walked to all of those places save the Galata Tower and the Dolbahançe Palace. (The latter required we jump on the nearby tram.) 3. Amenities. The Hotel's free wifi was fine: the service was much faster than many a Stateside hotel. I don't know if the hotel had printer service because I never needed it. The rooms were equipped with telephones though we never used ours. 4. The Staff. They were great. Within minutes of booking our reservation, the hotel manager/owner ("Mehmet") had emailed me. He's very engaging and friendly. Bottom line: when I return to Istanbul, I'm quite sure I'll contact the Lamp Hotel to inquire about availability! ...
