- What is priceline.com?
Priceline.com, founded by entrepreneur Jay Walker, is the first company in the world to allow consumers to name their own price for goods and services. Priceline launched its first "buyer-driven commerce" service - leisure airline tickets - in April 1998. Priceline's New Car Buying Service followed shortly thereafter. Now, priceline has expanded its services to enable consumers to name their own price for hotel rooms, and soon will expand to include home mortgages, rental cars, and other travel-related services. Leveraging the unique attributes of the Internet, priceline finds sellers willing to meet buyers' needs and price, thus facilitating thousands of buyer-driven transactions each day.
- How does priceline Hotels work?
It's easy! Visit our web site to make a hotel request. Simply tell us the city you'll be visiting, the dates of your stay, how many rooms you need, the quality level - 1,2,3,4 or 5 stars - of the hotel you'd like, and how much you want to pay per night. You confirm your request with a major credit card. Priceline then goes to work to find the best available hotel that will agree to your price. With priceline Hotels, you'll always stay in one of the major national brands or well-known independent properties. You'll have an answer to your request in one hour.
If we're successful, we'll immediately confirm your reservation and charge the complete amount - including standard hotel taxes of up to 20% -- to your credit card. We'll then send you both an e-mail and printed confirmation of your reservation. All you need to do is show up on the first day of your reservation with your priceline Hotel Confirmation Number and a credit card. Hotels require you provide a credit card at check-in to cover any applicable local hotel taxes and any incidental charges you might incur during your stay such as room service, phone calls, etc.
- Which hotels or hotel chains participate with priceline?
Priceline hotel participants are major national brands or the highest quality independent hotels. Priceline screens participating hotels carefully and updates our information constantly to ensure you always receive quality accommodations. We will work to place you in the very best available hotel willing to agree to your price.
- How do I name my price?
With priceline, you can name any price you want.
It's okay if you're not sure what price to name. For your reference, we'll show you the average range of room rates per night for hotels in the city and quality level you select. We suggest you use this range as a guideline and name a reasonable price that fits your budget. We will always try to find you the best available room at or above the quality level you select.
Here are the 4 easy steps we recommend to name your own price:
- Shop around for the lowest available hotel rates before you name your price.
- If the lowest rate you find fits your budget in a hotel you want to stay in, we recommend that you reserve those rooms, since rates and availability change constantly.
- If not, let priceline try to find available high quality hotel rooms for you, at the price you want to pay.
- Remember, the more reasonable your price, the better your chance of getting hotel rooms.
- Am I committed to keep my reservation once priceline finds an available hotel room at my price?
Yes. If we are successful and get you the hotel room you want at the price you requested, your room reservations are immediately guaranteed with your credit card. Since all priceline reservations are fully paid in advance of your arrival, charges for the room rate and applicable standard hotel taxes (for all rooms for the length of your stay) will be applied immediately to your credit card.
Rooms reserved through priceline are non-changeable and non-refundable.
- How do I check the status of my request?
Priceline will process your hotel request within one hour. There are 2 ways to find out whether we were able to find you a hotel room at your price:
- Check your e-mail after one hour.
- Call our automated phone system. This service is available 24 hours a day, and can be accessed by dialing the number provided in our confirmation e-mail.
Please wait to check on the outcome of your hotel request until the standard processing time has passed, as it often takes the full hour to find out if a hotel is willing to release rooms at your price. (If we are not able to find you a hotel at your price after the standard processing time of one hour, we will notify you by e-mail that the search is complete and we will no longer search for available hotel rooms.)
While priceline makes every effort to notify you of the outcome of your request after one hour via e-mail, incorrect e-mail addresses or technical problems beyond our control could delay your receipt of this notification. Therefore, if you do not receive an e-mail from us after one hour, please call our toll-free number to check the status of your request.
For your convenience, if we are able to find a hotel room at your price we will also mail a printed confirmation to the billing address of the credit card provided on the Web site.
- Can I resubmit my request for a higher price if I don't get reservations on my first try?
No, priceline Hotel Request's are limited to one request (for a maximum of 4 rooms) per hotel reservation. Our system does not process identical requests with only a change of price. If you're flexible and can change the city, zone, or the dates of your initial request, our system will process it as a new request.
For example, if you were unsuccessful with your first request for Boston and had only checked one city zone in which you wanted to stay, you would be allowed to enter a new request by selecting two or more zones at the same or higher price. Or, if you're flexible with your dates, on the second try you change your check-in date to a day earlier -- in either case, our system would consider the second request as a brand new Priceline Hotel Request.
- Can I make a Priceline Hotel Request any other way than on the Internet?
Not at this time. If you do not have an Internet connection at home or at work, there are many ways to get on the Internet. For example, you can use the computers at your local library or ask a friend or family member with Internet access to submit a hotel request for you.
- Is it safe to give my credit card number to priceline.com over the Internet?
Priceline has created a secure environment for credit card transactions. We use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to encrypt all personal information including your name, address, and your credit card number to prevent it from being read during transmission over the Internet.
If you prefer not to send your credit card number over the Internet, you may call our automated credit card entry system toll-free after you submit your request on our Web site. We want you to feel confident that your personal information is secure. Your trust and respect is our highest priority.
- Are there special discounts for children?
At priceline, we do not offer discounts for children. Your rooms are guaranteed for double occupancy. If you have additional needs for traveling with children (cots, roll-aways), you will need to check with the hotel directly after you receive your confirmation for availability and any applicable charges.
- Who should I notify about special needs and requests?
Requests for a specific room type (e.g., connecting rooms, smoking room, type of bedding) or location (e.g., high floor, view, away from elevator) should be made directly with your hotel, and we recommend that you call in advance to make your requests. We provide your hotel's telephone number on your priceline hotel confirmation. While your hotel will do its best to accommodate you, priceline cannot guarantee that all special requests can be met.
- What if I need a wheel-chair accessible room?
For requirements due to disability or requests for special needs, we urge you to call the hotel and verify any special requests of this nature in advance once your reservation is confirmed. Please note, however, that priceline cannot guarantee that all special requests can be met.

- What rules do I agree to when I place a hotel request with priceline?
- Priceline will only search for a hotel room in a major national-brand hotel or quality independent hotel participating in the priceline Hotels service, in the area of the city you select.
- Priceline requests a non-smoking room with a maximum occupancy of two adults. If you require a smoking room, or have other special needs or preferences, you can contact the hotel directly once your reservation is confirmed. While your hotel will make every effort to accommodate you, priceline cannot guarantee that your special needs or preferences will be met.
- You guarantee your hotel request with a major credit card. If we find a hotel willing to agree to your price, we will confirm your reservation and charge the entire amount of your stay, including up to 20% in standard hotel tax, to your credit card.
- Since priceline reservations are fully paid in advance, reservations cannot be changed or cancelled.
- Priceline does not provide frequent traveler points. Upgrades, certificate vouchers and other discounts or incentives do not apply to rooms reserved through priceline.
- How does priceline determine the quality levels of participating hotels?
Priceline provides quality star ratings for your reference. Like the well-known hotel rating systems, priceline uses a number of factors in evaluating the quality of participating hotels such as: size of rooms, decor/furnishings, amenities, public areas, hospitality services, maintenance/housekeeping, reputation, etc. Priceline screens participating hotels carefully and updates our information constantly to ensure you always receive quality accommodations.
Outlined below are the descriptions of facilities and amenities for each quality rating:

Description of Star Rating
|
 |
1 Star hotels are basic accommodations. Usually non-chain hotels and motels, with only the most basic decor and services.
|
|
2 Star hotels offer a clean, attractive, more than basic room with a color TV, in-room movies, 24-hour front desk and usually a restaurant. A pool may also be available. These are the kind of brand-name hotels you would find in any major city. They are significantly better than a hotel or motel you might find on an interstate highway.
|
|
3 Star hotels are beautifully appointed in both their rooms and public spaces. They offer a wide range of high-quality amenities such as room service, a pool and gym, a fine restaurant, valet parking and 24-hour room service. Major chain downtown business hotels are usually 3 stars.
|
|
4 Star hotels offer everything a 3 Star hotel has at a luxury level of service and facilities. Rooms are superb, usually contain mini-bars, multi-line phones, bathrobes and luxurious appointments. Less than one hotel in 500 qualify for 4 Stars and these hotels are the best in almost any city.
|
|
5 Star hotels are super luxury hotels and resorts, the elite of the world. These hotels offer the highest levels of quality and service you can buy with personal attention to every detail. Less than one hotel in one thousand qualifies as a 5-star. Most cities do not have 5-star properties.

- What is a zone and why should I select more zones in the city I want to visit?
We have divided some larger metropolitan areas into two or more zones. You select the zones in which you'd like us to try to find a hotel at your price. By selecting as many zones as possible, you allow us to search the greatest number of hotels, thereby maximizing your chances of getting a room at the price you want to pay.
- What if I don't see the city in which I want to stay?
Priceline's name your own price hotel service is currently available in 26 U.S. metropolitan cities and their surrounding areas. If you do not find the city or area you want to visit in the drop down list on our Web site, it may mean that we do not currently serve that city. Remember, though, that smaller cities and towns may be listed as a zone of a major city on the drop down list. For example, Cambridge, Massachusetts is an area we serve but you would need to select Boston from the drop-down list to view it.
We'll be adding even more cities in the weeks to come. If you don't find the city or zone you want, we hope you will come back soon and try again.
- What is the minimum age a guest must be to check into a hotel?
Priceline's minimum age to check into a hotel is 21 years of age.
- Is the price I name for the hotel room or for each guest in the room?
The price you name is for each room per night. Each room includes occupancy for 2 people.
- How many rooms can I reserve?
You may reserve up to 4 rooms at a time. If you need to reserve additional rooms and are flexible with your dates, zone(s), or hotel quality rating, our system will process it as a new request. Please remember that with priceline you cannot request a specific hotel, so we may find rooms at the price you want but at a different hotel.
- How do I make a group request?
We're sorry, but priceline cannot process requests for group accommodations. Any requests for 5 or more rooms should be made directly with the hotel of your choice.
- How near to my travel date can I make priceline reservations?
Priceline will process requests for next-day check-in provided the request is submitted before 3:00 pm EST on the day prior to check-in.
- How far in advance can I make a priceline reservation?
You may submit a request for up to six months in advance of your request.
- How do I check the status of my request?
Priceline will process your hotel request within one hour. There are 2 ways to find out whether we were able to find you a hotel room at your price:
- Check your e-mail after one hour
Therefore, if you do not receive an e-mail from us after one hour, we recommend you call our toll-free number to check the status of your request.
For your convenience, if we are able to find a hotel room at your price we will also mail a printed confirmation to the billing address of the credit card provided on the Web site.
- Why do I have to give my credit card before you search for my hotel room?
- Is it safe to give my credit card number to priceline over the Internet?
- Will priceline ever sell or give my name or personal information to a third party?
- What forms of payment do you accept?
- In what ways can I provide priceline with my credit card number?
- Are taxes included in my price I name?
- I'm reserving multiple rooms; may I charge the rooms reservations to separate credit cards?
- May I change the credit card I used to guarantee my priceline reservation?
- If I don't have a credit card when I check into my hotel, how much of a cash deposit will I be required to provide?
- Why do I have to give my credit card before you search for my hotel room?
The only way hotels are willing to release hotel rooms to us for the price you want to pay is if they are guaranteed a sale. For this reason a credit card is required before we can conduct a search. Our system does not allow us to search for available hotel rooms when a credit card has not been provided.
- Is it safe to give my credit card number to priceline over the Internet?
Priceline has created a secure environment for credit card transactions. We use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to encrypt all personal information including your name, address, and credit card number to prevent it from being read during transmission over the Internet.
If you prefer not to send your credit card number over the Internet, you may call our automated credit card entry system toll-free after you submit your request.
We want you to feel confident that your personal information is secure. Your trust and respect is our highest priority.
- Will priceline ever sell or give my name or personal information to a third party?
We respect your privacy and will only release your name, e-mail address or personal information to the participating hotel in which your hotel room has been confirmed. We ask for your personal information only to be able to get in touch with the contact you choose regarding your Priceline Hotel Request and for billing purposes. Please note that there is an option on the Web site for you to be included on our mailing list to receive future updates regarding priceline.com.
- What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept the following major credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover/Novus. Please note that at this time we only accept credit cards with U.S. billing addresses. We also accept debit cards branded with the Visa or MasterCard logo.
- In what ways can I provide priceline with my credit card number?
- You can enter your credit card number directly on our Web site using our secure connection. All personal and credit card information is encrypted and cannot be read in transit.
- You can call us toll-free with your credit card number after you submit your request on the Web site. Just follow the directions on the site. Please note that we cannot begin to process your ticket request until we receive your credit card number. (Remember if we don't hear from you within 24 hours, your request will be removed from our system).
- Are taxes included in my price I name?
No, the price you name is for the hotel room rate exclusive of any taxes. However, all hotel rooms are subject to city and state sales tax, which will vary based on the city you are visiting, but are guaranteed not to exceed 20%. This tax is not included in the price you name but will be calculated and added to your credit card charges after we find an available hotel room.
Also, depending on the city you select, a local tax or "Hotel Occupancy Tax" may apply. These taxes will be added by your hotel and will be payable upon check-out.
Hotel rooms purchased through priceline.com are subject to the same taxes as those reserved through a travel agent or directly from the hotels.
- I'm reserving multiple rooms; may I charge the rooms reservations to separate credit cards?
All rooms in a priceline hotel request will be charged to one credit card. Reservation names can be different from the cardholder's name and once you check-in to your hotel, incidentals and additional taxes may be secured with separate credit cards. There is no requirement to use the same credit card you used on the Web site as the credit card you provide to the hotel for payment of taxes and incidental charges.
- May I change the credit card I used to guarantee my priceline reservation?
It is not possible to change credit card information after a request has been submitted on our Web site.
- If I don't have a credit card when I check into my hotel, how much of a cash deposit will I be required to provide?
Policies vary by hotel. Please call the hotel directly in advance to inquire as to the amount required.

If you do not wish to provide a credit card, you may be asked to provide a cash deposit instead.
- What are the check-in/check-out times for my hotel?
The exact check-in/check-out times for your hotel will be provided to you in your confirmation e-mail. For your convenience, we will also mail a printed confirmation with your priceline Reservation Confirmation Number and your hotel's check-in/check-out times, address, telephone and fax numbers, Web site address, and a break down of all charges applied to your credit card.
All priceline rooms are guaranteed for late arrival (after 6:00pm). Since you have already paid for your accommodations, the hotel is required to hold your room until you arrive. If you arrive earlier then the specified check-in time, and your room isn't ready, most hotels will gladly offer to secure your luggage. If you know you will be arriving late, we recommend that you call your hotel ahead of time and advise the front desk.
Also, if you prefer a late check-out, consult with the hotel front desk on the evening prior to your departure.
- Who should I call if I need to change the name on a confirmed hotel reservation?
Please call your hotel directly to make any changes to the names under which your hotel rooms have been reserved by priceline. However, no changes to your credit card are possible after your reservations have been confirmed and guaranteed.
- May I let someone else check in for me and use my reservation?
Yes. However, any changes to the reservation names must be made directly with the hotel either in advance or at the time you check in. Remember that priceline room reservations are fully paid for in advance by the credit card used to make the Priceline Hotel Request. No changes to your credit card are possible after your reservations have been confirmed and guaranteed.
- Who should I notify about special needs and requests?
Requests for a specific room type (e.g., connecting rooms, smoking room, type of bedding) or location (e.g., high floor, view, away from elevator) should be made directly with your hotel once your reservation is confirmed, and we recommend that you call in advance to make your requests.
- May I upgrade my room?
Unfortunately, room upgrades are not available through priceline.com. Rooms prepaid through priceline are requested as non-smoking with a maximum occupancy of two people.
- May I change the arrival or departure dates of my reservation?
No, date changes cannot be made to a confirmed priceline hotel reservation. If you wish to change or add names, arrive earlier or extend your stay, you must contact the hotel directly . If your hotel confirms a change to a priceline reservation, additional room charges may be applicable and are at the discretion of the hotel and at the hotel's prevailing rates at the time of your request.
- How can I get either a smoking or a non-smoking room?
All rooms are requested for non-smoking. If you require a smoking room, you can make arrangements with your hotel directly once your reservation is confirmed.
- What is the minimum age a guest must be to check into a hotel?
Priceline's minimum age to check into a hotel is 21 years of age.
- Are pets allowed in my hotel?
Policies regarding pets vary from hotel to hotel. You should call your hotel directly for rules and restrictions regarding pets in hotel rooms or on hotel grounds.

Priceline hotel reservations are prepaid in advance but only for the arrival and departure dates confirmed in your Priceline Hotel Request. If you are arriving very late, be sure to call the hotel in advance. If you do not arrive until the following day and do not notify the hotel, it is possible that your hotel may consider you a "no-show".
- What happens if my hotel is sold out when I arrive?
If this situation occurs (and it is uncommon), participating hotels have agreed to follow the standard policy for "walking" confirmed priceline guests. The hotel endeavors to find a comparable room in a nearby hotel at no charge, usually provides taxi fare to the hotel if necessary and a complimentary long distance call to advise your family/office.
- What if I need a courtesy car?
Frequently hotels will have a courtesy car - a hotel car or van available to provide airport pick-ups and drop-offs. However, you should inquire with the hotel for exact airport pick-up and drop-off availability.

- Why can't I get through your Web site to make a request while I'm at work?
If you are accessing the Web from a company network, there is likely a network firewall. The firewall configuration often conflicts with secure transactions.
- I have Web-TV. Are there any problems using your Web site?
Yes. Currently, Web-TV does not support secure transactions in an encrypted environment,
including SSL technology utilized in the priceline site for security.
